Bream Fishing : Underwater secrets
Bream fishing on weedy gravel pits often means dropping Method feeder tactics and going for a legering approach. In this video I take a look at the bream rigs and bream baits I use on weedy gravel pits, when targeting big fish.
Keep watching, as towards the end I switch to my underwater cameras to capture some fantastic bream footage, showing feeding fish, how bream react when they hit the line and how groundbait is moved around by the bream.

Your obviously using carp type rigs but it's sure a pleasure to watch a video on fish other than carp. It's amazing how terminal tackle has changed over the 50 years I have been fishing. Bream and Tench are my main quarry. Great video.

Hi I love bream and learned an important lesson on bream behaviour from this video. I didn’t realise they moved that quickly! Mind you those tactics don’t score on my favourite venue but I have very deep margins and very heavy weed growth. Some swims are 11 feet deep and weed beds reach the surface most years. As always a very enjoyable video. Bill

Great vid. Totally clear why we were always told to wait for the ‘confident pull’ of a bream bite. Surprised how well the gb held the fish despite the limited particles. Thank you for the great work 👌🏻

Paul Garner Fishing I fished the carp Societies horseshoe lake went out with the marker two hours later and a ton of weed around my waders I found a clear spot. Went to my distant sticks to find out how many wraps the mark was then realised in my happiness of finding a spot I forgot to clip up 😩 Have you tried Dynamites hemp & Snails. ? I’m off to Linear in a weeks time il try there snails on the hook. Keep the vids coming there much appreciated.

shed43a lol, my big problem is remembering how many wraps the spots are at. I always forget the second I’ve measured it. I try to write them down, but still manage to forget to do that. I’ve used the hemp and snails for barbel and they work great. Nice tough bait those snails, a friend of mine has caught some big tench on them.

Paul Garner Fishing Couldn’t get dynamites snails so decided to go all out for the carp on Oxlease on linear complex. Cut a long story short I had the big common out at 46 lb she has gone 52lb but hey I’m a happpy angler.

Hi paul.very interesting, your images of the camera work confirms to me what I have always believed when it comes to fish knocking into line and that is fish are afraid of what they can't see not what they can see.I've proved this with the old black dacron to my lead and feeders especially where carp are concerned I never failed to catch in fact it improved it.In all walks of nature your spooked by what you can't see. 2 rodlenths of thick dacron as the leader,try it paul they will still knock into the line but won't spool and remain calm. 👍

Great vid Paul and really interesting film of the bream on the bottom. I presume the dislikes are from carp anglers who get pestered in the night from bream! I presume you get the odd carp on those rigs of yours?

Very interesting footage, thanks for sharing. I never would have pictured them moving around so quickly when feeding but it certainly explains a few things like the positive nature of the bites (ie. a big pull forward or drop back) and why you get loads of singular bubbles coming up over a wide area when a shoal is in the vicinity. My thoughts on the lack of response when bumping into the line would be that perhaps it doesn't really register as a threat because they live and feed in a fairly tight shoal and are kind of used to bumping into things. Maybe if you were targeting a super low stock venue where the shoal size was considerably smaller then perhaps they'd be more prone to spooking?

TjDolHaus86 good thinking on the bumping into the line. I wish I could avoid those line bites, worst thing about bream fishing! Although the anticipation of a proper bite does keep you on your toes! I always know when it’s a proper bite though - wait for the baitrunner to tick, tick....

Another great watch Paul, really enjoyable and thought provoking as always! For what it’s worth, I completely concur with you regarding weed and I never really feel very confident fishing over it for bream. If fishing for a couple of days or more, I would personally rather risk the effect of the disturbance and rake an area big enough to present my baits properly rather than always doubting the presentation. Obviously on short quick hit sessions that’s not really an option and I agree rig choice in such circumstances is therefore important. I agree simple is best and less likely to get caught up but I’m interested in your choice of arrangement; do you not feel a chod style set up (in weed) at least affords some added comfort when you can’t be sure you’re on the clear spot/s? It was especially interesting watching the fish feed. I’m certainly no expert in fish behaviour (or anything else for that matter!) but I am a big believer in creating a cloud to assist confident feeding and it did appear the bream grew in confidence the more the water coloured up (?). As I commented on the tench video, the use of liquidized particles, soil and worms creates the most amazing cloud that lasts for an awful long time which, in my humble experience, creates a situation that holds fish in the swim without feeding them and more importantly creates an environment that encourages a feeding spree in otherwise unfavourable conditions i.e. in the case of bream during the hours of daylight? Anyway enough of my waffle, keep em coming Paul - brilliant👍

Jango Jango thanks very much. Really pleased that people are enjoying the films. My buddy Stu and I did some testing on chods a few years ago underwater and it was interesting stuff. They work great over a covering of chod, or low weed, but we found that when fishing into holes in the weed even heavy leadcore would get hung up and the hooklength ‘could’ end up suspended off the bottom. That’s why I tend to like the hooklength in front of the lead. Heli-Rig works great in clearer swims though. Got a couple of friends who swear by fishing them really tight with heavy bobbins.

Thanks for replying Paul. Your findings on helicopter/chod type rigs is very interesting and I shall certainly be reconsidering my choices. Underwater filming and observation has certainly dispelled many theories/ principals ( because in many cases that’s really all they are!!) about how and why things work. Regarding tight lines, before the weed gets up and after it’s died off, I must confess to being a dinosaur as I too still use the technique. Long drops on heavy Bob Henderson swing arms still seem to do the business but I do get some funny looks from the carp boys! All the best.

Good, sound advice as always. Paul, with a pva bag that size, do you not suffer from losing leads on the cast with the parachute effect as the bag hits the water? I’ve tried various lead clips but with the same result bar pushing the tail rubber on hard which defeats the object of making the lead eject if snagged and therefore not as safe as it should be.

Wayne Nippard hi Wayne, yep that can be a problem with PVA sticks. If you hit the clip, slowing the rigs fall before it hits the water it should help a lot. Failing that, put a couple of turns of PVA tape over the spigot on the lead clip.

Good video, on the part about really taking the time to find a suitable spot, if this was to take 1 or 2 hours would you still do this even on a day session? Im always concerned about disturbing the swim or what other anglers think when I take the time to find the right spot? Even on a day session would you recommend doing this? I guess its another edge

Good question. I tend to fish longer sessions to be honest because of the distance I often travel to fish, but on a day session I would still spend the time especially on weedy venues like the one in the Bream Underwater video. I wasn’t fishing very far out there, but it still took ages to get the small spots nailed down. Good point about other Angler’s. I don’t want to upset my neighbours, so do take this into account. I honestly think the fish will come back pretty quickly after the disturbance stops. Use just a lead tied on and not a marker float - there’s less disturbance and it will pick up less weed making it easier to feel what’s going on. Tight lines! Paul

You made a slight mistake at around 13.13 where you said you DON'T use 2-3 inch hook lengths like you use for BREAM fishing you meant you don't use the shorter hook lengths like you use for your Tench fishing. Just re-visited many of your vlogs in readiness for when the lockdown is removed. Although I’ve missed that early spring period for bream and will probably start of for tench, I will be back on the bream come autumn. Through your experience have you found any specific boilie to outfish others? Although, in fairness, I have caught bream on pretty much anything from sweet, fruity flavours, to more fishy or even nut based boilies I have never really found anything that stands out from the crowd. Just wondering if you have settled on anything specific? Thanks.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the comment - good question. My experiences really mirror yours. I have caught on all sorts of boilies, both intentionally and accidentally. I would say that a fishmeal-based boilie has the edge. Bream also seem to like Green Lipped Mussel extract, which is sometimes found in fishmeal baits. I will often add some liquid molasses to my homemade fishmeal boilies, as that is another classic attractor, and helps to give a rounder taste to fishmeal's. The one thing that I have found bream don't like are the liquid fish protein extracts - stuff Like L zero 30, try to avoid baits that have got stuff like that in them.

Thanks Paul, very interesting answer and very helpful. Like you, I have found GLM to have an edge and have been using molasses from years back from my match fishing days. Interesting point about fish protein extracts though. Will definitely avoid these, so thanks for the heads up. One bait I hammered bream on years ago was a bait that I actually used to try and avoid them as I was fishing for carp on Rockford in Ringwood at the time. Was told of a bait that bream really didn’t like so switched to peanuts on good advice. How wrong that was. The bream were mad for them 😂 Might of been a one off but I’ve never really used them since as they are banned on most of the waters I have fished since. Shame ☹️

andrew tate hi Andrew, yep that would work as well. I just have more confidence in the way I do it as it offers more protection to the hook and is a little less likely to get hooked up in weed. Might only be 1-2% difference, but why take that chance? Cheers, Paul
