Beyond Oasis was created by Ancient Corp, a video game developer founded in 1990 by game music composer Yuzo Koshiro. You may know Yuzo from his work on classics like Streets of Rage, Actraiser and the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog. Yuzo himself did the soundtrack for Beyond Oasis and it does not disappoint.
The fifth game to be developed at Ancient, Beyond Oasis was first released in Japan in December of 1994 and was then called “The Story of Thor: A Successor of Light” despite the fact that the hero does not use hammers at all and he’s a prince… not a god. Lightning isn’t even one of his powers. The name remained unchanged in it’s March 1995 European release but in it’s North American release, just 15 days later, the name was changed along with the main character who became Prince Ali.

Wait you said even as a kid in 1994 but you said the game released in Mar of 1995?

I misspoke, Beyond Oasis was released in March of 1995 in the United States but was released in December of 1994 in Japan (as The Story of Thor). I confused the two release dates. Honestly, I didn't remember the actual year, but I knew it was a new game at the time so it had to be 1995. I'll pin your comment to the top to serve as a correction. Thank you for helping me keep the channel accurate and watching the whole video. That's pretty awesome of you.

Same. I got a TG16 for 6th grade Christmas (Dec 90) An SNES for 7th grade Christmas (Dec 91) And then bought a Genesis Core System ( that was the original version genesis, with no game included, for 99$) in Spring of 9th (so like March 94) with my own money just cuz I saw it at Electrons Boutique BUT I sold my TG16 and all the games in Summer 92 so I could buy Street Fighter 2 SNES. It was 69.99. A lot of people seems to have forgotten (or just have never known) that some games were that expensive back then. I hear lots of people act like the 59.99 we pay nowadays is the most we've ever paid for a normal list price for a normal game. I'm sure Final Fantasy 3 (6) was 69.99 or maybe 79.99 also when I got that in 10th grade (Feb 1995). Back when the number of megs was a big selling point. Street Fighter 2 at 16mb was a huge deal

I absolutely adored this game! I still play it on my PlayStation on the second genesis retro game. I even figured out the cheat codes to get all the weapons on my PS3. I Actually found some new stuff when I played it on PS3. And it is so much clearer. I absolutely loved this game. It was such a pleasure to play it again as an adult. Btw you can summon sprite by shooting at the round blood colored spots in the dungeon where they are hopping around. Also you cannot kill the dragon with the fire sword. You cannot fight fire with fire, literally. You have to use a regular sword to kill the dragon and also any fire enemies. When you are on the beach wade into the water then walk out fish will flop out onto the sand and when they die they become fish food.

I'd rather play Beyond Oasis over Breath of the Wild for these reasons 1. better music to keep me interested. 2. better boss fights 3. more interesting story (at least for 94) 4. you actually know how much your weapons will last you 5. more variety of enemies 6. challenging final boss 7. better magic attacks 8. more replay value (for those nintendo fanboys who get angry over this comment, at least breath of the wild is so much more playable than Alundra)
@FancyGeeks
@FancyGeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! My thoughts on Breath of the Wild are probably long enough for a whole video... Hmmm. I'll try to briefly lay them out here. :) I really loved Breath of the Wild and I'm still playing it almost every day but I still agree with a lot of what you're saying here. I hope they fix a lot of this in the sequel. The boss fights do need more work. In the early game the mini bosses are fun and challenging but they get way too easy, way too quickly (with one notable exception). The main bosses are all basically a variation on the same boss. The story is a tough one, it's hard to have an open world game and also have a great story. I want to see a lot more diaries and journals and more cut scenes that aren't flashbacks but mostly, I want to see less "fetch it" side quests and more fleshed out side stories about minor characters. The weapons didn't bother me until Master mode. That's when it got silly. I like the system, but I want to see weapons last longer and a repair system implemented. I think variety of enemies could be an easy one for the sequel, just keep all the ones already there and make more for the new game. I think the final boss was only easy if you had already cleared the divine beasts. If not, Ganon has 4 additional forms. I found beating it once that way to be pretty challenging. I hope the next game does a better job, dark beast Ganon was weak. I don't really have an opinion on magic or the music. I thought both were fine but also would not mind seeing them changed a bit in the sequel.

I know people like to mention Castlevania SOTN copying Metroid but I feel like Castlevania SOTN took some inspiration from Beyond Oasis too. Even the Faerie familiar Spite looks alike and maybe the winding letters look familiar too.
@lnsflare1
@lnsflare1 4 жыл бұрын
According to Igarashi, his inspiration was Zelda rather than Metroid, which makes sense since Zelda games are (usually) basically just open world Metroidvanias with puzzle based dungeons. As for Dytto looking like the Sprite, I think that may have more to do with Dytto having a fairly generic fairy design.

I get what you're saying. I mean it's Sega's answer to Zelda but also what else was it supposed to be? How many ways can you make a tile and sprite based top down game what where a hero swings a sword? Plus so many of the ideas invented here made it back into Zelda so it moved the genre forward for sure.

I don't really remember the running jumps being that hard. That being said, I'm currently playing Ys: The Ark of Napishtam, so perhaps I'm just being generous to it in comparison to the hell that is AoN's dash jump, a mechanic that was thankfully tossed into a burning dumpster for all future Ys games.
