I love how Mipha and Zelda are never portrayed as jealous or resentful of each other. I’m pretty sick of love triangle tropes where people hate each other. It’s refreshing to see Mipha actually being supportive and respectful of Zelda and Link’s feelings. Same thing goes for Paya as well.

I personally think that almost everyone became aware of the attraction between Link and Zelda (Kass’s teacher/the court poet, Urbosa, Mipha, Impa, the Deku Tree) but back then, the two were close, but were never in an official relationship due to Calamity Ganon’s imminent return and the fact that Link was a commoner. However, after the Great Calamity and Calamity Ganon’s defeat a hundred years later, they are free to romance each other and will likely marry in the sequel.

This is easily one of my biggest disappointments with BotW. I was fully convinced when I sat to play for the first time that this would be *the* game where Link emotes and gestures...but he just...doesn't. Some of the best moments for me are honestly in his small bits of expression, where he's taken aback by the Sheikah Slate, startled by the shaking from Hyrule Castle atop the Great Plateau Tower, or his subtle downward gaze at Rhoam's words of his past. At this point, I genuinely don't care about Link being the connection between the player and the games themselves. I want him to be his own character, with a soul and identity.

I completely agree with this, but one thing to add. Urbosa's wink. I always took it as take care of Hyrule as the land, and the wink also signified Zelda because her last name was Hyrule. (At least I think because isn't that her father's surname?) I always took it as a cheeky joke from Urbosa while also being serious for his quest.

For me it was basically confirmed when Zelda starts to say “-I “ to the deku tree when asking it to relay a message. She wouldn’t of kept it to herself if it was something that would help link defeat Gannon or important to his memories. The fact that she agreed to the deku trees statement of “whatever you need to tell him don’t you think you should tell him yourself?” Just shows it was a personal or a just normal piece of information of something Zelda wanted to say about link. “I” implies that she was going to express something she feels about link or something relating to her perspective and point of view and opinions. Her using “I” which so coincidentally aligned with being interrupted by the deku tree means it is a big reveal and not some meaningless “I hope you succeed” or a “I am so glad you’ve looked out for me all these years” that’s just something common that Zelda wouldn’t take the time to tell the deku tree to relay that message

I never thought of this! I always figured it was "Tell him I love him" but I didn't think of the fact that the Deku Tree interrupting her and telling her to tell him herself would be personal! Because if Zelda actually told Impa to tell Link to "free the Divine Beasts", she certainly would've told the Deku Tree without interruption something similar, especially if it was something like "free the Divine Beasts". One of my favorite moments is in the forest when Link is helping Zelda escape from Ganon. Zelda falls after being dragged by Link. If he was just her sworn knight, he would’ve told her to get up and keep running, but instead he sheathes his sword and kneels down to listen to her. He listens to her guilt and feels her regret. And when she finally breaks down and begins sobbing, he holds her.

There is a diary in the American version, it is written in the 3rd person, but in the Japanese version, it is Link who wrote it and he ends up saying that he wants to see Zelda's smile again. just remember that, although the game has a western medieval fantasy aspect, it is made in Japan, and in the game itself there are situations or details very much from Japanese culture and that makes the act of Zelda touching Link's face or hair and Link wants to see his smile again, already implies an approach more than friends, more complicit and sentimental between them.

Ok, I have 5 more reinforcement reasons: 1. When Link is comforting Zelda it may seem like Link is just giving her support, but if you look closer, they’re HUGGING 2. In the secret ending it has been concluded that they did not kiss, but it really looked like they were ABOUT to kiss 3. Another one about the secret ending, if you look really closely when the run towards each other, they slow down and start to HOLD HANDS 4. I've always thought that Zelda had feelings for Link before he even became her knight. In Zelda's diary she refers to Link as "HIM", (page 1) signifying that Link was already an important person to her, and being a teenage girl with a lot on her plate, she was flitting between love and hate. Then in an exerpt from her research notes, (page 5) Zelda says, "It may sound rude that I found this unexpected, but Mipha mastered the controls with surprising ease." To me, this exerpt makes it seem as though Zelda has some resentment or jealousy towards Mipha, possibly because she and Link were so close, or because she knew Mipha had feelings for Link. Anyways, this was just my two cents

Another thing that I would like to add In favor of Zelink, is when Miphia is talking to Zelda about trying to awakening her sealing power, there is a abrupt cut to link. I think we know what this is trying to imply. (Mipha speaks of thinking of the person you love, and the person it cuts to is Link. This feels very intentional).

I don't know if we can say they were "dating", but they were definitely in love. I think they were trying to keep things professional because they both had important duties, so they were sort of putting their feelings on hold. And don't forget, Mipha had been making engagement armor for him. I doubt she would have done that if they were actually dating, but as long as they weren't actually together, she still had a chance.

The memories are specially designed so that you can interpret everything into it. On the one hand, your theory that the two were already together when they traveled through Hyrule, but on the other hand, you can also think that a close friendship developed between them. So it's up to the player what he wants to believe. My humble theory is that the two were/are in love with each other but neither confessed their love to the other. It's more like everyone knows how they feel about each other but Link and Zelda have no idea.

In the spanish subs Mipha says that helps to her to think about the person she loves when she uses her power. I think that is a insinuation to Zelda, that maybe she could get her powers if she thinks in the person she loves, and that's what happen after that, in the memory where Zelda awakes her powers to save Link. I understand your point about link sacrificing himself for Zelda and I really like this video but any scenario where link risk his life for Zelda I wouldn’t count as evidence because it’s his job to protect Zelda he comes from a loyal bloodline of knights dedicated to the kingdom and the king tasked him to protect Zelda & if he truly cared about Zelda as a friend or in a romantic way he would have faith in her ability to unlock her power also in past Zelda games Ganon is always beaten differently but in this one specifically after beating both ganon phases Zelda is the one who seals him away for good otherwise he’d have been defeated not destroyed also Zelda has the blood of the goddess that seals ganon link has the spirit of the hero that can defeat ganon the spirit of the hero has been passed down from previous links but Every Zelda is directed related up to hylia herself so if she dies the bloodline ends and ganon will eventually return an bring the end but I still really like this theory 👍👍👏 Great work.

Adding to your point: - Link was actually too beaten to do almost anything at that point. Considering that he didn't even tried to prevent Zelda from shielding him. - Link is always portrayed to be the "Heroic Type". Even if he surviving would mean that he could save more people from the calamity. Just the thought of letting someone he could save behind should be enough to stop him of even thinking about it.

I love this theory and I do believe it, but for the running memory notice that he’s not actually holding Zelda’s hand but her wrist, and how she keeps stumbling behind him. I’d say she was in shock over the carnage and Link, seeing the danger, had to get her to safety and just quickly grabbed her and started booking it. She’s still clearly distraught, since Link’s keeping a steady pace while she can barely keep up, all building up to when she breaks down and they stop running

My theory is that hints are put in the games and let willingly discreet so you can either cherish them or ignore them. As Link's emotions. Everything is made for you to imagine his feelings and their relationship as you'd want them to be. It's not that "it's only your opinion and anybody can disagree", but more "if you think it happened like this for YOUR Link, then it really happened in YOUR version of the story; maybe it didn't happen for millions other people who imagined/played their Link differently, but for you and the memories you'll keep from this game, you can consider it canon". In my theory Link has always been so blank and quiet so you can fill this empty body with your own soul, emotions and thoughts. And the same goes for his blurry relationships: we know for sure how the others feel but how Link feels and responds is entirely up to you. Thank you for highlighting some details I missed too. :)

Wow you've done such a great job putting this all together! There are my thoughts below, nothing to tell against video. I want people to understand that not all characters need to have a love interest. Close friends are 100% enough for many movies/games/etc. They still can love each other but not in a _couple_ way. But. F r i e n d s. Not everyone have to fall in love with other MC just bc they are both MC. I mean. Friendship is cool. It can include gentle touches, cuddles and whatewer else people tend to claim only for ones who in relationship.

Honest opinion; why Mipha was standing so far away from link was maybe because she was showing how far away he actually is from her. Even if they were really close, she still felt as if he was still so far away that she couldn’t bear to get any closer knowing that he was moving on from her. I really think tat link did used to have a little bit of feelings for Mipha, but when he was assigned Zelda’s appointed knight he started to change and get more comfortable with Zelda, and forgetting a little bit about his feelings towards mipha. Btw great video :’)

And about the memory where Ganon is released and the Urbosa and Mipha memories... 1. Urbosa, finds Link to be the best guy for Zelda and also she knows Zelda has a crush on him but that wink and constunt pushes were for to Link who at that time was dense AF to take the hint. 2. In Mipha's case it true see had this fear of losing links affection since in every Japanese media its the childhood friends that either are friendzoned or killed, sadly both things happen in Mipha's case. And after being saved from water blight Ganon... her distance is very symbolic as she knows that now theres no way for her to be with link and to accept that Link about this time in the story has opened to those feeling he felt back than but neglected them for his duty. TL;DR that moment Mipha truly died.

Very good job! If I may add something: in the village you help to build, at the end, the builder get married to a gerudo and during the ceremony a huge amount of petals are flying, the same way as during the very end of the game when the two are reunited. Also when Link saves her at the end and she asks him if he remembers... her (?... instead of asking if he remembers that she loves him). But I think their love was not revealed or assumed, I think Zelda felt in love first then Link knew it and even if he was attracted by her he was not open to reveal it and before defeating ganon, until he knows that she had to unleash her power by the power of her love.

In 13:01 your theory has some backing up as long time ago when a monarch dies his only child (a daughter) wouldn’t take the throne but her husband did. After the death of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI who only had a daughter, Austria went into civil war which ended with his son-in-law Francis I, taking the throne.

This is a great theory, however I believe that they were not dating before the calamity. After the scene where link saves zelda from the yiga clan, the two grow closer together. I think they started to have feelings for each other during this time leading up to the calamity, but they were so focused on the task at hand that they couldn't possibly have dated. I think they probably made flirtatious gestures to each other, like zelda touching links hair, without completely realizing. According to kass, zelda's love for link awakened her power at fort hateno. I feel like she realized that what she had been feeling for him was love when he was severely injured, and tried to protect her anyway(he probably did this out of love, and he probably knew already because you wouldn't do something like this for someone unless you really knew you loved them). I think that her powers suddenly awakening shows that she could finally realized that it was love. If she knew she loved him ever since the yiga encounter, she would not have had this sudden reconciliation and she may have gotten her powers sooner, or she may have encountered them a different way. In conclusion, I believe that there was a spark since the yiga ecounter, that finally ignited at the battle of fort hateno, and it finally blooms into a relationship after the calamity is vanquished, with link eventually becoming king as urbosa's wink predicts.

If you haven't already read them, if you really love BotW Zelink the way I do, you NEED to read the "Trouble the Water" series by marydragon on Ao3. They're all from Zelda's PoV and my canon for the game now, they're SO good! "Calm Waters Run Deep" is novel length and covers the memories/pregame. "Remember the Spring" is a one-shot covering the game itself. "The Quiet River Rages" is novel length and covers after the game ends. Then there's one more collection of one-shots from Link's PoV that span from his childhood through the fics. I also have a speed paint on my channel of a BotW Zelink piece I did a couple years ago (I'm an illustrator for a living), but that's just a shameless plug.😅 But for real, you really need to check out those fics! They're published novel quality.
