From what I understand, and I'm pulling this primarily from Muichiro's fight with Upper 5, but it seems like the breathing style also applies to the air that is currently within one's lungs. Basically, you use your oxygen reserves within to pull off the technique as opposed to using fresh air

There was air in the swamp demon's blood demon art, also I think the breathing style is a combination of breath and sword style, so even without air you could do it with your sword and without your sword you could do it without air with to a lesser extent, this is shown when Rengoku runs with flames without drawing his sword or zenitu's "thunder screech" when he sees Nezuko at the start of the latest season

I think it wasnt actually water but more of a demon blood arts that mimics water, like the feel, cold, and suffocating feeling that comes from it. It could also be the fact that his training in the mountains trained him to breathe in a lot of air in his lungs and how to hold it for longer periods of time (Like how muichiro used his last breath in the water vase thing) but its most probably the former since he said that even the freaking MOUNTAIN in HIGH ALTITUDE had less air than that place😂

It wasn’t actually underwater, it was stimulated as if with the air being extremely thin, tanjiro mentions he trained on mount sagiri with thinner air there. When muichiro was trapped underwater, it was an actually water vase. He was surviving with the remaining air he inhaled before getting trapped, therefore he only escaped when he had enough air to use a form.

I'll explain to ya'all more properly and yh the thing that i am gonna say was mentioned in the anime but i think a lot of us forgot about it. Basically during the swordsmiths village arc Muichiro was stuck inside a move which was called "Water pot" or smt like that i forgot what it was called exaclty since its been a long time since i watched that episode and yh the move that Muicihiro was stuck in was created by non other than gyokko the 5th upper moon. He was stuck inside that bubble of water thingy and it was rly jelly like which he wasnt able to cut using his kinda chipped sword. During that time Muichiro was able to use i think 2nd form of mist breathing by the air inside his lungs. So yh u dont rly need to breathe to use breathing techniques untill u have air (oxygen) inside your lungs and my guess is tanjiro did the same while fighting that demon in the first season. Btw muichiro was able to escape the bubble of water thingy by awakening his demon slayer mark i think :))) LoL i wrote quite a lot i see

Breathing styles don’t make sense to me. Clearly some kind of mystical elemental aspect to it. For example the author or whoever tries to say the elements are just visualizations and don’t actually appear and tries to be more realistic. But clearly the element affects the environment in some way when animated. Why try to make demon slayer more realistic? Zenitsus hair literally turns yellow from being struck by lightning. They have these magic demon slayer marks that amplify their abilities. There is a magic flower that turns people into immortal evil cannibals. They can mystically make their rank appear, there’s talking crows. Why try to fit breathing styles into realism? Just keep them as mystical elemental abilities rather than making it all in their head.
