Let's not forget Dan Patch who won 54 straight races from 1900-02; then he raced the clock for 7 yrs. his WR of 1:55 set in 06' was an exhibition in front of 96,000 people. That record was not broken for 54 years in 1960. Talk about greatness, yes Varenne certainly one of the best ever, but let's not forget another greatest too. You have to go to Britannica to get different info but he has a historical society that has all the records and write ups to support a greatest in historical context

I know that The trotter Greyhound was honoured as the greatest horse of the last century,won the hambletonian, also in 1938 trotted a record in 155.1 an unbelievable time that stood over 30 years and had 14 world records .He was the horse of his day as was Varenne but lets say in the future there trotting in 1.46 does that diminish there legacy I dont think so! Its impossible to compare horses of different generations.

Pay no mind to him, he doesn't like being called to the table but I'll help u out in the greatest ever category. 1st Varenne is at the pinnacle especially in modern racing but in historical context there is at least one other worth mentioning and its backed up by more than wikipedia:& the trotter's name is Dan Patch: 54:54-0-0 Undefeated from 1900-1902; then 7 yrs raced the clock. in 06' set wr for mile at 1:55 which wasn't broken till 60'. he broke 14 WR's and was virtually uncatchable

the best historically came over 100 years ago. His name was Dan Patch. A 10 yr undefeated record. Broke 14 world records and his mile in 1906 at 1:55 stood as the standard for 54 years. not broken until 1960! Varenne a true great, but he has company in the historical best category...

MtItaliano, you are very proud of Varenne -- and you should be very proud -- but you make people upset when you fail to acknowledge that Varenne is -- except for one French grandam -- a NORTH AMERICAN trotter. So of course the North American trotter can race at different distances and win. Varenne is the perfect example. But, I must praise the Italians. They are good breeders and unlike the French, they use American blood wisely. Thank you, Mr. Italiano for your great enthusiasm. :)

i agree with you. ihe more beautiful is ideal but varenne won more than others al 7 y.o. on all continents. the strongest horse of all time is varenne. ideal second, ourasi third (but she runned only the amerique!)

@MrItaliano 1900- it was just my opinion, I really stopped watching racing late in the 80's early 90's so my comment was based on what I saw from the races I had mentioned, and as I said only my opinion. Yes Varenne was an incredible trotter, probably the best ever, but up until I stopped watching those races were the most impressive to me. Ive watched Varennes races on youtube and must say he was amazing, just to clear things up.

I must agree Varenne was an amazing horse but there are a few in the last few years I would of loved too see race against, Muscle Hill who won 20 straight to finish his career. I guarantee Muscle Hill would be a match for any trotter, check out the 2009 race at the Meadowlands 1.50.1. Tied the world record for a mile at the time.

Muscle Hill only raced till 3 so who knows what he could of done after he matured,winnings of $3.2 million ,I wish I owned this donkey! Its just sad the ownership decides to send the horse too the breeding shed way too soon,I wish more trotters travelled across the oceans to compete against the best from Europe and North America makes for a great day of racing.

All you guys talk about Varenne like he's some kinda god..He was a great horse yeah...But lets face it a Muscle Hill he's not...But the best trotter i have ever seen is the European ( Sebastian KS ) He would wipe the floor with Varenne...He set a world record at Pocono last night 1:49 flat

You can't compare Varenne with Sebastian K, diff generations and horses run faster now. What Varenne did in racing will never be accomplished by any trotter ever again, won the biggest races and no matter distance, he was a tank and had amazin speed. winnings = 8.7m dollar I think that Sebastian K is one of the best sprinter today, we will see when he races some good horses.

The sticking point with Varenne's legacy is the fact that he is - save for one grandam - a North American standarbred trotter. It's great for Italians to be proud of their great horse, but true "Italian trotters" would not be competitive in the USA and Canada. Varenne is what he is because of his American breeding. Pride in a horse's talent is one thing, but this ultra nationalism is unsportsmanlike. To their credit Italians appreciate USA blood. The French try to pretend it doesn't exist.

the reason they dont cross over is because they are likely making $8,000,000 a yr in stud fees so as an owner and business person, why race when they can stay home, have sex often, and bankroll their retirements? And if you were the horse what would you rather do? Train and race once in a while or eat, drink, run about a farm filled with mares just waiting in line for you to pump them?

just responding 2 ur race conditions, weather, track conditions etc.in the 1900's compared to 1960 and 2001, its a fair bet that there were a great many things to the disadvantage of Dan Patch & his record stood for more than 50 yrs. He raced every distance available in 00-09 and won every race he entered so blow me! He broke 14 World Records % many times he repeatedly broke his own records...he was virtually uncatchable douche bag. he made won over a million dollars 2 yrs running in 01 & 02.
