Comment from Laura Smith via Facebook: "Beautiful tribute! It's been years since I had contact with Helders (think circa 1990s). As someone who rides primarily OTTB, I loved learning how the Helders put thoroughbred blood into their breeding program. I had no idea! Sincerest condolences to his friends and family!"

I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I am glad that you mentioned how important it is to maintain ordinary folks having horses not just the high end folks. I hope that there will be more focus by the various associations in helping children being involved with horses because they are the future of the horse industry.

Well said.I completely agree that if we don’t have new people coming in, especially young folks, the horse business will slowly atrophy and die. That would be a terrible shame. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.

Great interview with a reasonable, old fashion breeder. I'm sorry you lost a great friend. I'm a small hobby breeder of Appaloosa Horses who has a new foal every couple of years. I love the breed totally, and am most interested in the horses mind. A sound mind, brings delight in horse ownership. ❤ It's unfortunate that the expense of being a small hobby breeder is great. Those expenses get passed on to the buyer. Foals I used to sell for 5000$ are now 10,000$ babies. I never sell before they're 2. I put hours of starting work into my foals so they leave me being kind, gentle, thinkers with minds that can go in any direction! There's not many of us left as we are between high end, specific breeders to what I call "horse traders". 😢 Hopefully, someday we horse people will realize that hobbyists are still a much needed commodity in the horse world!

You’re right. Things have changed immensely. It is much harder to get into horses at this point than it was even 10 years ago.
