@Simply Betta: Hi Taylor, great video with a nice explanation of what aspects you took under consideration. Nice animations as well! Selection of breeders indeed is subjective and even if two hobbyists would start with the same pair, the result will be not the same a few generations down the line as personal preference simply differs from hobbyist to hobbyists. Nothing wrong with that! As the perfect fish simply does not exist it will be difficult to find all the desired characteristics in one fish. As F1 generation, all these fish should be carrying the right components to see some lightbodied metallic fish back in F2. It will be a matter of chance that the right alleles will be combined to get the combination you are aiming for colorwise. I would not worry too much about the red wash at this point, this likely will pop-up anyway in some fish in F2. You can always get rid of that later by selective breeding. For me personally form includes the finnage as well. At the moment the F1 generation shown in this video are is superdelta, in order to work towards the shape of the finnage as shown in your animations I would already put more emphasis on that when selecting fish for F2 from this spawn. Off course I can not see these fish live and only can judge them from the pictures/videos displayed in here. With respect to the males I also would choose male number 1 and understand why you have selected number 11. Personally I also would take number 9 in consideration. With respect tot he females, female number 4 would be a no-go for me because of the short body (despite the nice color). Female 1 and 3 would be my first pick, but would also take 5 as reserve. There are many ways to succes and at the end it is all matter of personal preference and working the line by selective breeding. In order to increase the chance of reaching your goals I would advise not to bet on one horse but to go for more than one in parallel if the space/time allows this in order to create multiple options for future 😉. Good luck and looking forward to see the results!!

Also a very important trait to look for, especially in metallics, are the scales. They should be all around the same size and go streamlined along the body. Fish with scale faults would bei disqualified in shows. Plus when talking about metallics or whites. Allways keep an eye out for any growths on the scales and eyes.

Here is a great comment from @mackenzie ferguson from a different video! Hi Taylor! This is a lovely video and considering what the parents were, it looks like you did very well here! I know this is a video from a while ago, but since you asked in BBU, here's my 2 cents! From the potential fish you've chosen, it looks like you're leaning towards yellow/blue copper longfin HM, so that's what I'm going to go with here. As far as my overall personal preferences, I want fish with enough body to hold up those fins in the long term, finnage that is proportional to the fish's body (again for longevity, but also balance), and toplines that don't drop off towards the head. I personally do not like fighting red wash and spoon heads, so I don't lol! Overall, I think these fish have a nice depth of body, but they all appear to be a little short in comparison. I'd try to breed towards keeping the depth of body and strong base of tail, while adding length to improve the overall balance. Another thing you may struggle with a little is getting those nice sharp outer caudal edges. In my opinion, there are 3 males I'd consider and 2 females. I've listed them in preference order with critique below: Males: #1: Male 8 - Male 8 would be my top pick. Overall he is a nicely balanced fish with no red wash, a nice topline, and strong tail base. I really like the depth of his body and how strong the base of his tail is. He has a decent spread, but is lacking those sharp edges (though the outer rim is even which is good). His dorsal fin could have longer front rays, but that may also be from the photo/video. His anal fin is long, but considering his positives, I don't mind it too much. Long anal fins can be hard to breed away from, so that is something to keep in mind. He doesn't have any red wash which is a nice plus (considering my assumption with where you want to go with this line) and he has a nice topline without spoonhead issues or a dramatic slope. #2: Male 11 - I like this male too, though not as much as Male 8. He has nice depth of body, but is shorter than I'd like. I do think his body will be able to support his finnage long term. His topline slopes a bit farther down than I'd like as well. His dorsal is fine, and while his caudal has good spread, the outer rim isn't as smooth. His anal fin is also long. He does have some red wash, but it's not too bad overall #3: Male 10 - This male probably has the best length/depth ratio, but his finnage is oversized for my taste. He has a decent balance between his 3 unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, anal), but he does have red wash. I'd prefer longer front dorsal rays. I do worry about this fish's ability to hold up with its finnage over time and therefore his ability to produce fish who hold up to their finnage over time as well. Females: #1: Female 5 - I like this female the most. She has a nice topline with good depth of body. She appears a bit shorter than I'd like though. I like how even and balanced her anal fin is, especially in comparison to the males. She doesn't have a red wash which is nice. Her dorsal fin looks alright, the front rays could be longer and the dorsal could be wider as well. The caudal is nice and even, again the edge rays could be longer to help give that 'sharp' look, but it's not bad, and she appears to have good spread. #2: Female 3 - This is another nice female with a good topline and depth of body. She is shorter than I'd like. Her anal fin isn't quite as nice as Female 5, but still pretty good. Her caudal/dorsal fin spread is nice. She does have red wash though it isn't too bad. If you wanted to go HMPK with this line, I'd probably go get a nice copper male HMPK and pair to Female 5, it would save you a bunch of work. I would make sure to look for a male with really clean caudal fin edges, a good anal fin (depending on what variation of HMPK you want), and a longer body. Overall, this looks like a nice group considering how different your parent fish were!

That is a good explanation of how you select the pairs. But we have to take in consideration that in genetics there is a thin called Recombination Frequency where you can mathematically calculate how the offspring will be using the Punnett square, that describes the phenotypic ratio 9:3:3:1, so let's say you get just 16 individuals only 1 will be with the characteristics that you're looking for. Long story short from the amount of offsprings just a few will have the golden color you are trying to get very probable in the 3-4th generation. But I'll be here to congratulate you in that achievement. Best of success in the task ahead.

I have 6 grow out tanks for my other betta grow out tanks, 2 tanks per nest, I try and do one nest per month! But I only have 40 gallon breeders for the female hang out tank, one per pair of tanks for a total of three. My LFS is very excited for me to breed api api! Also males in F1 was better, than females, be prepared that many fish will have probubly shorted body (every female has shorter body than it should have) try to choose fish with longer body in future. But this is what makes breeding betta fish so unique, it is always compromisse between little fault on fish and what You trying to get at the end. Finger crossed with this line! 😊

I'm new to the hobby, but I've always wanted betta. I've spent a lot of time researching (there's not a lot of consistent information about caring for them, everyone thinks their way is best so it's hard to know what really is aside from the basics). I got a male for $20 from a local fish shop. I wasn't looking to spend that much, but he looked healthy and GORGEOUS. He's a sunset fade in color light goldish/yellowish from the head, fades into blue and purple on the body. It'll be a while before I actually even attempt to breed, but I've also had a female that's got a whiteish body and purplish pink fins. She shimmers iridescent in the right light, I call her Pearl. Also have a new female that, for some reason, was clearanced to like $2.99. She looked perfectly fine, she acts perfect and she's so sweet. It wasn't until I got her home that I realized she's super similar in colors to him, she just has more of the light color and a little black on her face. I'm so excited, hopefully they do well.

Thanks so much for the nice comment! I got scolded for choosing the colorful female over the female with nice form, haha. Oh well, live and learn. I got greedy for gold :P Breeding rabbits sounds like SO much fun, especially when you get those tiny little fluffy babiesss

@@SimplyBetta it's an insanely competitive world in rabbit showing but it's awesome, I miss it greatly. Don't worry about those who will always have an opinion on your choices, in someone's eyes you will always be frowned upon, but what matters is what YOU WANT! If they want to breed for what they like, they can get there own gold lines 🙃😉

Any chance you’ll make a series like this??? I would love love to see it.

Just found you’re channel, and found this video very interesting. Just out of curiosity if you haven’t already could you possibly do a series of how you breed through generations to get your ideal fish?

I appreciate that!! I don't have a follow-up for this particular line. I had to move houses and disassemble my fish room after this vid, so I couldn't continue. I WILL be doing more of this, though : )

Ok. I'm not sure if you would agree with my choice for the male, but I would go with male #5 and female #4. #5's finnage might be a little out of the circle, but not to much. I like his fins, but color is what decided it, also with female #4. Her color is awesome. Thank you sooooo much for this video. I will never look at betas the same way again.😆

Thanks for your thoughts Cathy! Male 5 was a favorite of mine, he was choice 3! I decided against it though because of that slight scoop in his topline

I have an halfmoon plakat as my first betta and God he's handsome! Then now I have 20+ beautiful bettas. I got obsessed with the long fins i have now 2 copper halfmoons, 2 black orchids I'll soon breed them. I really love the copper right now!

Beautiful fish and I love this type of content. It reminds me of plant breeding and the judging contests when I worked for 4-H. Your videos make me want a betta (or a few), but I have dart frogs.

This video is so fun! I love bettas so much, even though I don't have the time in my life to experiment with breeding them right now. I wish! I do have a question for you, though. What can I do to keep my longer finned boys' tails looking really great? Without little tears or anything? I do weekly water changes, the parameters are great, I use IAL....I just want to do the best I can for them. Thanks so much for your time and please keep the awesome content coming!
@SimplyBetta3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you liked it! As for perfect fins, a tank without things to catch and tear is great. Sometimes you just get fish who NIP their fins and it is infuriating, haha

1yr old video, almost to the day. But this type of video but for more generations would be super interesting. And as for what I'd do, I'd try to pair another pair unrelated but same colors. And then pair up those babies to this ones. Pair 'pair A' with the goal to create mainly one look and pair 'pair B' to create another look and when A+B babies are combined to try to get all in one in less generations. I don't know if that's possible with fish but that's something I'd try.

This is extreamly informative! I love videos like this! This one video took me several hours to watch just simply because I'm going back and forth, pausing and playing, watching closely at the small details you're talking about and studying and testing myself on what the best structure and colors are the best and seeing if I would have made the right decisions and learning what one to bread to the other based on what's lacking and what's spot on. They fit together like a puzzle piece and some spawns may get all the bad genetics and some may get all the good genetics and everything in between. I find it very interesting and I'd love to see more videos having to do with structure.

Great video :) I liked a lot the animations. They are too cute! I personnaly chose bettas that are less aggressive since it's not a behaviour I want to keep. I actually want bettas that are able to do good in a community tank. So I look at their extra- and intra-specific behaviour and I don't want any aggressive or mean fish. For the ventrals I am very careful about the shape. I don't want forked ventrals, only single pointed ones.
@SimplyBetta3 жыл бұрын
Good comment about the ventrals. How have your spawns turned out when it comes to aggression?
@BarthelLaetitia3 жыл бұрын
@@SimplyBetta First I only work with plakat so injuries to the fins do heal really fast. Second I only jar the aggressive ones and I sell those quickly for one fish only tank. Third I do separate males from females because most of the male aggressive behaviour is displayed when there is female to conquere. I do add other fishes such as guppy (potential prey) or tateurndina (size like a betta and calm). Maybe in the futur I will try shrimp too. They also have ramshorm, some of them are hunting and some don't pay any interest in them. So far I do keep 5 to 6 males 10 months old in a 60x40 without any problem. But any fish isolated for a period of time do become aggressive so never having them isolated is a key. The wild bettas are exactly the same in that matter and I'm pretty certain it work the same for cichlids. Those fish do flare at each other when they want it. If a fish don't want to flare he just goes away and I don't notice any stress, he just give a face like "no not interested, I will go this way then". When both fish want to flare they do it for 1 or 2 minutes most of the time, a little more after feeding time. They rarely ever attack, it's really just flaring. So aggressive behaviour is a genetic and maintenance and hormonal problem. Actually, all fish that I sold for community tanks didn't show any problem. Those I jarred, I sold them for one fish only tank because I know they are mean.
