Breeding Neolamprologus Brevis - An in-depth Species Profile

Want to breed an awesome little shell dwelling fish? Check out these Neolamprologus Brevis! I talk about my breeding trio of Neolamprologus Brevis and my experience with them and raising their fry (babies). While these fish may not be the most colourful fish in the world, they make up for it with their interesting character and behaviour.
These little Cichlids are from a lake in Africa called Lake Tanganyika. Pretty much all the fish I have in my fish room are from that lake.

Great breeding video bro. I have several species of SA and CA that have bred. I have Trimacs right now, several Festaes as well. I also Keep and breed Frempongis from Bosomtwe L. Definitely digging the brevis!!

Interesting you were able to get multiple generations in one tank. My breeding pair ate all the fry as soon as they left the shell every time. I was only able to successfully get a batch of fry by siphoning them out.

That is interesting too. Goes to show that even between fish in the exact same species, not all fish will behave exactly the same. They might be inexperienced? Hopefully they will eventually learn the ropes on being good parents for you.

Thanks mate, glad you liked it. But no I haven't done one on Multies. I used to have them years ago and bred them by the thousands, so I haven't bought them again for my fish room. Regardless, I will look at doing an indepth species profile on them. I just got a male and female meant to be a pair, the male doesn't seem very impressed with the female he attacks her anytime she ventures out of her shell. Is this normal? Should I try getting another female?

I sometimes see my male seemingly attacking the female I have that resides at the back of the tank. He keeps shoving her into her shell. If they are a pair and you just got them, I suspect they just need some time to settle into their new surroundings. However, getting a second female will help spread the aggression. Another thing you can try if you can't source another female is adding some dither fish such as a few guppies. This should pre occupy the male and again will help spread the aggression.

@@JasonsCichlids Spot on advice, they are now sharing a shell, and I think I've seen them spawn. She trys to boot him out if he attempts to go in at the moment. This video is the best resource I've found online, everything else is copy pasted info.

I found bigger multis fly will some of smaller fly, is that same in brevis? I got pair of brevis recently as well, u know how to let them start breeding ??

Hi Liang, I think you're asking if Brevis fry will eat smaller Brevis fry? If so, yes Brevis fry do eat smaller Brevis fry. Congrats on getting some Brevis mate! If they are a pair and get along you will know they are breeding if they share the same shell. Might take some time for this to happen if you just purchased them. Hope that helps

Not a problem mate. Yeah they'll be fine with that. Consistent parameters a far more important than trying to chase parameters.

Jason's Cichlids what would you recommend for me I have a 3ft x 3ft x 16inch (high) tank... was thinking a heap of shellies but what would your recommendation be? I’d like to see some colour and movement in there.... but I love the look of the shellies...

@@bvg3041 oh mate that's an awesome sized tank. If you want some colour to keep with your shellies I recommend one of the Cyprichromis. Look them up, they swim in the upper part of the aquarium, so won't compete with your shellies for space and there are heaps of colourful varieties.

What would you think of a 6 gallon tank measuring 17.8x11x7.1 for a pair? It's got a nice footprint, not as long as a standard 10 gallon but wider, sacrificing height

You might be able to get away with it. But definitely wouldn't put more than a pair in.

Hi. My Brevis is start breeding now haha. Just wanna know, my tank is about 50x30x30 cm. Do u think I could have more fries if I add one more female into the tank?(yes I’ll put some rock between two female) just wanna know, is both two female will breed ?

That is great mate, well done on getting them to spawn. But I don't think you should add a second female. She will get bashed by the male as your pair now have fry. The second female may also eat the fry you now have. I have 2 females with 1 male but they grew up together. Introducing another fish once a pair has already formed and spawned is a huge risk to the new fish. I recommend you don't do it.

Hey, again. My tank is 50x40x30 cm. im keeping one pair of Brevis and 5 of Utinta. Do u think i could get more fry if i add one more female into the tank? or the new female will just get bully all the time and not breeding at all. and is the tank too small for Utinta? Should i just remove the utinta and add one more pair of brevis. (Is that ok?)

I would definitely take the 5 Utinta out of the tank as it is far too small for all those fish. If you do add another female Brevis do what you can to keep both females separated and break the line of sight by placing a rock between two areas of shells. I would not add another male in there as the two males will fight.

Gday mate from south Australia I bought the seachem lake salt from a shop they said it's been seating there for a long time , sold it to me for cheap price no expiry date on that is it safe to use it ?

Hey mate, none of the containers I have show an expiry date but I am sure the contents degrade over time. How long, who knows! It is a difficult question to answer, not knowing how old the product is. We talking over 5 years old? 10 years? I would assume if it is under that it should be ok. Do a pH/Hardness test on some water before and after you add the product and see how different the results are and maybe go from there?
