Breeding Zebrafish

This film shows some of the aspects of zebrafish production and maintenance. Zebrafish embryos, unlike mouse embryos, develop outside the mother's body and are transparent throughout the first few days of life. This provides unparallelled opportunities for researchers to scrutinise the fine details of embryonic vertebrate development without first having to resort to invasive procedures or killing the mother. This advantage is enhanced by the fact zebrafish can produce 200-300 fertilised eggs every week.

Honestly love that you use zebra fish as an animal model for research. It is done at my university in another department, too. I just want to know, do you induce the diseases in each fertalised egg, individually? How are you sure that the fertalised egg willl survive and how are you sure that the induction of the disease was successful at the earlier stage? Also, after induction, how long should you wait prior to running experiments with the zebra fish?

Good question to which I don't have a ready answer. The IAT: www.iat.org.uk/ have some careers information, but I guess any general Biological Sciences degree could lead into animal work if you do the animal science / physiology options.

Molecular biology & genetics is your best bet. I would recommend to consider marine biology if fish is your main interest instead of the medical research they conduct in this facility. I wish you the best of luck with your career choice! (biology is awesome !)

I fail to understand why the fish spawn over the egg capture device. What entices them to do so? Color? Distance from device to surface? Are the fish conditioned before the device is placed in the tank? Or is it just if you have enough fish in the tank, some will happen to do so... just random chance.

+TruckRat As I understand it, the fish will spawn over any 'surface.' Previously I've seen labs use marbles. And now my memory becomes really hazy, I think zebrafish spawn at first light so there may be an element of control through lighting - sorry to be so vague, filmed this a little while ago now.

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to spawn my fish for weeks. Tried different methods that others have used but no luck at all. I had 3 males and 3 females but one female died yesterday and one the day before so I stopped and put them back into the community tank. I must have stressed them too much. I was thinking of building a smaller version of the device in the video so as to not handle the fish unnecessarily. But for now I just want them to rest and relax so I don't loose another.

I hope you guys are breeding them responsibly, inbreeding should always be avoided. Can you make an animal parthenogenetic through genetic engineering?

As the film-maker, I'm not really qualified to answer either question. I know the research labs have a pretty sophisticated 'stud-book' so that they can breed the strains they are interested in. I'm not aware of an animal being genetically engineered to allow parthenogenetic reproduction.

Can u give any articles regarding genetics of color pattern... What if we breed pink zebra with fluorescent green zebra... Why there are two color strain comes from pink zebra alone.....

I am baffled as to why I can't get embryos....I'm a masters student and lately it seems every year I can only get embryos during the summer and then the rest of the year they wont give me any. They are fed extra throughout the day with supplementary brine shrimp on a 14 hour light and 8 hour light cycle and a dish of marbles is suspended close to the surface of the water on days I intend to collect eggs and temperature etc. is all regulated. In theory they are great! but at this point I'm ready to just straight up buy eggs instead of breeding because I'm getting noting accomplished.

your fish has a bacteria infection, when the belly is big and no eggs, dropsy is the name of that condition.

you shouldn't put a zebra danio alone in a gallon tank they are schooling fish

I believe they only isolate fish for breeding or medical treatment, but generally they are kept in groups.

Fish are kept in groups unless it is vital that a specific fish is isolated, and are usually only kept in isolation for a few days at most.
