@@cornejoronron Yes Bobby Womack - played guitar in Ray Charle's band, then toured with Wilson Picket, James Brown and Sam Cooke... as lead guitarist. So a pretty good fiddler RIP. Bobby joked "many of my songs became hits for other people... can you imagine that? I get beat up in the charts, by my own songs!" 'Stop On By' another minor hit for Bobby, huge hit for Rufus and Chaka Khan. It's All Over Now - Rolling Stones huge hit. And he wrote the theme music to the movie Across 110th Street. A genius up there with George.

MOST certainly the tune were done perfectly initially by, Gabor Szabo, years before, George 'Bad Bad' Benson, followed-up with it [Breezin']. Gabor Szabo's version, in fact....must've 'inspired' GB in some way for him [GB] to record it? Hats off to, Bobby Womack, who conceived it originally....🙌

Nice work, Josh! Thanks for putting your version up on the web. And for showing me how to play the tune. Recently I got a bug for learning the Breezin' tunes so I'll be working on this one. I want to arrange it as a guitar feature with the Big Band I play with. It would be very similar to your version except 14 horns and rhythm section behind me. I will have to change the string parts over to horn parts. The band has an extremely 'robust' trumpet section. I'll clamp mutes on those guys. Double the lead in the trombones and saxes. And free improv for myself. I can't stand copying an improv note for note, but use the recorded solo as a baseline for ideas. I have never delved into George's style but this will give the opportunity to do so. I'm not saying that playing the exact solo is bad. Not at all. Breezin' is like a 'top 40' hit in the jazz world. So a lot of jazz people know the solo note for note. Probably even criticize you if you didn't play it exactly as George did on his recording! Of course those type of people are missing the boat of what jazz is all about. They should be listening to classical music if note for note duplication is important to them. I heard George play live twice in the '70s. What a Master. I know exactly what he sounds like and how he plays. He was very impressive. Very soulful. All those blues lines. Peace - Fred L.

Not wishing to be pedantic but I feel compelled to point out that the George Benson version is itself a cover of the original which can be found on the Album "High Contrast" by the Late Hungarian Jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo released in 1971 on the Blue Thumb Label - BTS 28.The composer (also unfortunately Late) Bobby Womack plays rhythm guitar, Wolfgang Melz is on Bass, Jim Keltner on Drums and Felix "Flaco" Falcon on percussion. Santana fans will be familiar with the main riff because, whilst he has never recorded it, he frequently "visits" it in live performance particularly on "Samba Pa Ti". Carlos himself told me in an interview I did with him for the BBC (sorry to name-drop) in the mid-1970s that Szabo would frequently pop round to his place for a jam and he first heard it there. Guitar Buffs should already be familiar with Szabo's work but if not, check him out - you will not be disappointed! BTW, KZbin has a nice live version of the track by Carlos Santana and George Benson ( a TV performance I think) and I can also recommend a charming old reggae version of it by ( the probably Late!) guitarist Mickey Chung on a Green Door 45 GD 4032.-Phew! Having said all that, I'm impressed by The Josh Boyd Band and this excellent version! Thanks for posting - Jay from The U.K.
