Breitling SuperOcean Critique + Why The "SlowMotion" Should Be Better (Diving Chronograph)

A Discussion and Review of the Breitling "Slow-Motion" Superocean. From the 1957 Reissue to the Heritage Superocean, the issue with the Superocean line in general is that they struggle to find a grounding point to define the watch. This newest incarnation takes inspiration from the Ref. 2005 "Slowtimer" Diving Chronograph but strips away the many defining features in favour of streamlining the design. The result is a watch that comes across as an "in-between" trying to please everyone but lacks any real emotion.

My "excellent value for money" line about an SW300 movement - I assumed these new Superoceans used the same Kenissi movements that Tudor does... should've read the spec sheet. The SuperOcean is deep with a great history. Do you feel that this new “SlowMotion” is an odd choice to introduce as Breitling’s flagship dive watch? Or do you like this new direction? Personally, I’d take the ’57 SuperOcean any day but that’s just me 😉

This superocean type of release that is initially very controversial, and then years go by and most people start to love its uniqueness and willingness to be off trend. Smp300 was controversial at first too. As for the power reserve, does it really matter for most buyers for whom this will be a daily ? Understood that Tudor omega include 55-70 hr in house movements at price points, but you could argue new superocean is a more complex (expensive) dial, and they put more $ into the bezel, clasp, and overall build. Fwiw the in house thing is a great marketing ploy by watch industry for buyers to spend MUCH more on proprietary servicing vs off shelf movements
@ID-Guy

This model could easily make a big dent in years to come. It actually has a design that comes across very timeless (not beholden to a time period) which will help it age well. And as for the Sellita... foolish of me, I thought it house the same Kenissi movement that Tudor does... but you're right about servicing etc. You can't bash ETA's for their robustness and cost effectiveness when it comes time to service. Great points all around Sidhant!

I don't know... Tudor Black Bay is almost the definition of derivative design whereas this look is quite interesting actually. However it's true that it's a very polarizing look. That slow-motion chronograph feature would really set the SuperOcean apart but Breitling is not going to develop a new movement just to be able to reproduce a feature that nobody needs today. It would only make sense if people still used watches for diving which they don't. This is an everyday sports watch and I think it was OK for Breitling to take some design liberties.

I think the design could also use some work. I'm most bothered by the fat minute hand. I daylight and good lighting conditions, I was concerned it was so broad that getting a solid read on the minute would be hard. BUT, it does have an extended tip that reaches the minute markings on the outer chapter ring. HOWEVER, in the water where light is much lower and perhaps in some cases you may need to depend on the lume of the watch, I fear the fat square may be too casual about telling the exact time. In fact, you'll get a general idea of where the minute hand is pointing at. Idk? It may be good enough. But, where the broadness of the minute hand could float between 2-4 minutes of precision, having your life depending air supply on a vague time reading may not be such a great idea. It could certainly be enough to mean difference between life and death if you misjudge the general remaining minutea left by too far a margin. That being said, how many of us will actually use it for real dive time purposes? Let alone in situations where we'd rely so heavily on the lume of the fat square minute hand? And, any modern diver would likely just use modern dive equipment and electronics to successfully guide them through their deep aquatic activities. Wearing a dive watch on a dive is more a romantic idea rather than a practical one. So, my gripes about the minute hand may be moot.
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Жыл бұрын
Perfect thought on the fat minute hand and accuracy in the dark! It's generally why the minute hand is always pointed and extended to the end of the dial (with lume) Just so the eye can spot the minute to minute difference as it passes the plots. I think this is a very good point that we've all overlooked - the sheer impracticality of being able to tell the time accurately in the dark 🥃

Great critique, I've checked out the website and looking over many of the models they are mostly all 'very nice' looking watches, but for approx £3800 UK they have to be a bit better looking or more individual in their core styling than a Seiko MOD. That's what came into my mind, lots of Seiko MODS, and now that I have seen Seiko MOD I can't unsee them. I'm fighting with myself now to pick my favourite without 'seeing' something one tenth of the price. Sorry Breitling but I need to sleep on this one. This watch seems a bit form over function, it looks good but when you get into it for normal use the bezel function just mirrors the chapter ring but in a negative colour scheme ultimately reducing the readable dial for the time. Looking at the photographs it might not be for me, I'm not a fan of the 'Thor's Hammer' minute hand either. So many weird and rare oddities out there Mark and no I haven't! Maybe I should get in touch with Aquastar and ask. The only issue I've seen with them is their case thickness is a bit on the large size, like 15mm's (maybe more) which is a bit of a detractor) BUT the quirks are all there! 🥃

It is always better to judge a watch in the metal but from what I see on photos and videos I don't like this new version of the SuperOcean. It doesn't do anything to me with the design. They have many beautiful models but this one is very strange to me.

Couldn't have said it better. There's something about it that stands out (in a weird way) Maybe, just maybe it'll stand the test of time BUT there's a fine line between how gorgeous a dive watch can be vs how functional it can be. This one leans a bit to far away from the beauty ;)

@@ID-Guy Agree. It also could be like the issue with the new Ranger or the Blancpain Bathyscaphe - a few little tweaks would do the magic and the watch would stand out totally differently.

I’m trying to be kind but this release is a “head scratcher.” What was Breitling thinking? I want them to succeed but this was a missed opportunity in my opinion. Do vintage or do modern but it’s just a bad idea to combine the two. Maybe this release will be successful for them but I highly doubt it. Let’s hope for something more inspired next time please.

Breitling designs were at its best in during the 2000s. The Chronomat series, Colt series and SuperOcean series in those days just scream masculinity. Now their designs just look bland, cheap and lacking in character.

Have to agree Uncle. Just reading those names I can envision all of those 2000's models (and how popular they were) It's clear that the Masculinity has been adjusted for inclusivity - affecting how their designs come across today. It's a weird paradigm! Very well put 🥃

This watch is a mess. Its terrible value for money (I saw the pinned comment), its unattractive with that gigantic chapter ring and the because of that questionable design choice the dial and hands *have to be* tiny. That chapter ring makes sense on a chrono, where it measures the minutes elapsed but on a three hand date? Why? Why get this when you can get a Tudor with an inhouse movement for less or an inhouse Oris with 5 day power reserve for less? They royally messed up.

What exactly are Breitling giving here ? A new clasp & Bezel , that's about 3 years overdue ! They have removed the date function from an Off the Shelf supplier & all the new SuperOcean's only have a 300M rating so no helium valve also on the 44mm & + sizes. the superocean jazz hands edition. 😂. The problem is the white inner ring- what purpose does this serve? delete this, extend the hands out to normal, keep the dial colors.... oh my... it now looks like every other cheap dive watch. OR just upgrade the old version, upgrade the bezel to ceramic, keep new bracelet design, but make it brushed, grab the herritage mov't with the much larger power reserve, plop it in there. Make 2 versions, date and no date make in only in 42mm. They are not going to get the all important Asian penetration with what they are doing. Settle for a single logo- for F* sake, now its just a striped shield and 2 lumps on a hill, vs a B with a anchor and wings. Hot mess of a company.

The 'BOY GEORGE'S KERN watch world’s constant feasting on the past, with each regurgitation looking less and less elegant and original, is really unhealthy. Breitling has taken the new Superocean to the abyss of shame, and replaced it with something that looks so cheap and clumsy as well!!
