I purchased a Saturn in 1997 specifically for racing games, and the console didn't disappoint. I'm glad to see you highlight some of the lesser known titles Bastich B because so many people focus on the big SEGA racers and forget about the others, which are great games.

Amazing how our experiences differ, the most played Racing game for me on the Saturn is Sonic R, and as a 11yo kid, I mastered the game and courses, I can still play it just as well today. With that said, I know it's not for everyone as it's quite unique in its approach and handling, but those who actually put the time into it, had quite a lot of fun. Man, your daughter is charming and amazing how she looks like you!

The " game over ... yeahhhhhh " took me right back to playing my brothers Saturn and Sega rally .... spent hours playing it mastering the tracks ... so wish a Saturn mini would come out just so I can play it again ..... if only

Having now modded my 1up i`v been dabbling in Saturn and Dreamcast racing games that i just could`nt afford back in the day, so thanks for the heads up on some of those games. I really wish Sega Rally would have made it to the Dreamcast with better graphics as Sega Rally 2 just not quite the same, something feels off, maybe car dynamics, handling, gaphics, not quite sure. But yer Sega Rally No1 only beaten handling wise (My opinion anyway) Was Screamer 2/Screamer Rally on pc and played both to death to the point the cd stopped working.

I don't agree that Daytona CCE improves the original on all levels, I prefer the original actually. I do love Sonic R, it seems to be polarising. If you like Andretti Racing, you might like Nascar 1998 too. I would say both are waaaaaay better than SEGA Touring Car Challenge.

Shutokou Battle 97 should be on this list, but maybe because it was a japanese only title it's less known. It became Tokyo Extreme Racer on the Dreamcast later. Not sure if it's related to the Drift King/Highway 2000 mentioned in the video.

Shutokou Battle 97 is the same series as Drift King. It is 首都高 in Japanese, and I believe Drift King is western name. It has no relationship with Highway 2000.

I don't understand why most people dislike virtua racing on saturn. It's one of the only saturn games I have and I like it. Good to see other people enjoy it. Great vid.

It's a great game. My favourite is the 32x but the Saturn version got it's charm! The Soundtrack is AMAZING as always! That rendering is EPIC... The Saturn Version deserves a lot of love!

A lot of it is because it doesn't stand out. Graphically impressive games were a big deal back then, so Virtua Racing looking like its MegaDrive counterpart just slightly souped up wasn't winning anyone's favour. Especially when it was competing with giants in the racing genre like SEGA Rally, Gran Turismo, and Ridge Racer. The 32X is the more impressive version due to the limitations of the 32X and how far it pushed them, with the 32X being as powerful as the Atari Jaguar, and the Saturn being a mid-point between the PlayStation and Nintendo 64.

Another fan of Saturn Virtua Racing! So misunderstood, it has lots of content. Think it was shunned at the time for having flat untextured polygons, in the same way 2d 32bit games were panned, but as you say it's aged very well.

It was shunned because it was a pure garbage version of an epic game knocked together by time Warner rather than AM2

It’s just not got the same precise handling as the original as they didn’t have the original game code and had to make the game by simply playing on a loaned arcade machine. It’s a good effort but I think the colours look a bit dull and muddy.

Sega Touring Car is totally rubbish. Poor control, Poor framerate, Poor resolution, Poor texture. I tried to play Daytona CE with a racing wheel called "Power Wheel", which can also use in N64, PS1 and SS. I found that the control is pretty well and similar to Arcade!! However, this racing wheel cannot control other racing game well. Beside Shutokou Battle 97, there is Touge King of Spirits 2 which got very good graphic.

i disagree. I absolutely think of racing games when I think of the Saturn. More than either the PS1 or N64. To me, the Saturn was the home of arcade games, and that includes both fighting games and racing as well. I'd definitely think of racing games far sooner than I'd think RPGs. Also Sonic R is excellent, damn it. :P

Great list ! I would have added Street Racing even though I'm a bit disappointed they doesn't use the same music they put in the Snes version. Other than that the game play great. It's more focussed on fun, but it's a solid one.

I really enjoyed this video. I was researching Saturn racing games and this was the one of the first options to come up on Google. You've got a new subscriber. A couple of things I'd like to add: 1) As other commenters have written, "NASCAR '98" is pretty cool. I left a comment elsewhere talking about the PS1 version because I've yet to play the Saturn version. I assume they're mostly similar and if so, it'll be a winner. 2) If you liked "The Need For Speed" then you'll like "Overdrivin' GT-R" too. It was a Japanese localization of the original NFS and is the only console version of that game to have analog steering, throttle, and brakes thanks to supporting the Saturn's 3D Pad. It was sponsored by Nissan Motor Co. instead of Road & Track Magazine so the car roster is entirely different. The slower vintage cars are an absolute joy to drive with that physics engine. I keep Yaba Sanshiro Saturn emulator and that game installed on my phone because it still brings me joy to pick up and play.

I've never played the Saturn version of "NASCAR '98"; but, I've got a lot of mileage in the PlayStation version. The PlayStation version is a great game. I may be wrong; but, it feels like a much improved sequel to the stock car side of "Andretti Racing". The intro has Molly Hatchet blasting "Flirtin' With Disaster". The graphics are solid and there's a lot of tracks (a mix of real life and reasonably believable fantasy courses - no Daytona though, because Sega had the exclusive rights at the time. There were two minor annoyances; 1) draw distance wasn't the best, and 2) the parts of the driver visible in the cockpit view looks more like a cat than a human. I checked out some box art of the Saturn version and the cat person is missing. Instead cockpit view is shown to have been handled more like the original "Need For Speed". There's two versions of "NASCAR '98" for the PS1; the original and the Collector's Edition (CE). The CE removed one of the fantasy tracks and replaced it with the real life home of the Southern 500, Darlington. I think it also added a Richard Petty themed car as well. I don't think Saturn got the CE version, sadly. If it did then it was super rare because I couldn't find any available for sale on eBay.

Yeah the Saturn never did get a CE. The nice thing about the Saturn version is that the car models don't look horizontally stretched like the PS1 version. I think you may be right about 98 being an improved version of Andretti Racing. I bet EA was using upgraded versions of the same engine for many of their mid to late 90's stock car racers. I remember EA's Nascar Road Racing for the PC in 1999 also having a "Andretti Racing" look to it as well. "Flirtin With Disaster" was a huge southern rock hit in its day! I was glad to hear it in the 98 soundtrack. I think the 80s rock band Y&T had their hit "Mean Streak" on the soundtrack as well. Another favorite of mine. I wish EA would care enough to make a modern stock car racer with all the great fantasy tracks from every Nascar game they ever had -- starting in the 90s. Like a Road Racing Ultimate Edition 2024. That would make for an epic "rubbin' is racing" masterpiece.@@mattdavis9601

wipeout 1 and wipeout 2097 are better than all this games and on par with sega rally. Sega touring car championship is crap, and the fact it is included in this top 10 says a lot about how bad saturn's racing games were...

Saturn had some good racing games, but when you had stuff like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit and Gran Turismo 2 on the PS1, the Saturn's offerings felt very dated.

Due to the horrible flaw in Sega Rally of all velocity and momentum magically disapppearing if you touch a wall, I'll never consider Sega Rally to be a good game. It is crap. It is literally the only racing game I've ever played that is harsher than reality.

Glad you put Daytona: CCE on the list instead of the original Daytona conversion. Yeah the first port for the system was more Arcade accurate but the pop in, draw distance and frame rate makes it hard to play, especially now that a HD arcade perfect remake is on PSN and XBL. CCE on Saturn holds up as a fun game that looks and performs well even if it is quite different, and I like the remixed updated soundtrack better.
