The best commodore 64 games video I have ever seen. I was a massive C64 fan and I remember half of your games you've shown. The other half I've never heard of like Stealth fighter and the submarine games. I read Zzap64 so I don't know how I missed these. I always wonder how they managed to squeeze such great games into just 64k of RAM. That is like a text file now. Incredible. And the music creators were great becoming house hold names. The voice samples were exciting back then. No Internet back then so no viruses or malware. Games were cheaper with no packs to buy or season passes. Then there was the budget games at £2.99 that were sometimes better than full price games. But the game loading speeds were agonisingly slow on tape. My favourite games were Wizball, Nebulus, Paradroid, Trailblazer, Mercenary and World Leaderboard. And who didn't get strip poker that exposed those female breasts when you were a teenager?

What an undertaking this video was I'm sure. Two HUNDRED games covered. Absolutely impressive effort to have put this together. Of course, nobody will ever agree 100% with anyone else's "top games" list, but..... I can see where you are coming from with your selections, and along with your explanation of why certain games were placed in certain positions, it's a respectable list, indeed. Saw a few games in here that I've never even heard of, and of course, there were some entries that I was a bit surprised to see missing. In any case though, nice work on this video, bud.

I actually preferred the C64 version to the Amiga version. The Amiga version just came off as another unpolished direct Atari ST port, and it showed. The original ST version was pretty good too, but the Amiga version just lacked polish, especially in the gameplay department

A little known fact about the first Super Pipeline game is that it was originally developed to be a coin-op, however it was cancelled due to the fact that the crash happened in North America, as it was a US company that the game was being developed for. Taskset started out AW Electronics, a British based developer of arcade games...mostly for Centuri Electronics

Amazing work on this! Very thoughtful and informed selection. Project Firestart in particular is one I'd never even heard of that looks absolutely mindblowing! Excellent game-rooms too! Another lovely anniversary present for our favourite breadbox. A few C64 game recommendations for anyone reading (sorry if any of these were mentioned!): -Below The Root - an excellent open-world adventure taking place in a world with towns built into 7 massive trees. You control one of 5 characters from either of the two races who are trying to bridge the strife between the ground-dwelling Erdlings and the Kindars living in the trees. The best hope for this lies with the lost boy Raamo, who you must seek out in this impressive "metroidvania". You'll find yourself gliding between treetop villages and speaking with villagers, avoiding kidnappers hostile to your plans, hacking your way through thick vines to learn hermits' secrets, and gaining psychic abilities such as "pense" to read minds and "grunspeke" to grow branches and reach new areas. A really peaceful game in the sea of shooty-shoot games, violence is almost impossible and can hinder your character's progress, even stealing food or crashing in a stranger's bed are forbidden. A beautiful, peaceful journey through a lush world that invites you to explore. -Alleykat - a simple, fast vertical combat racing game where you pilot speedy, racer-type vehicles on various planets to earn your way to the big-leagues. This one is pretty tricky and you'll probably crash quite a bit at first, but there's a palpable arcade "tightness" to the experience and especially sound design that I can only compare to an 80s-future pinball machine. -Cave of the Word Wizard - as an early edu-tainment game, it isn't graphically impressive or even that great, but this one has huge nostalgia for me and quite nice speech synthesis too! "SPELL: CHALKBOARD" *spells it out* "SUPER! SEE YOU LATER!" *wizard gives you a band-aid and dematerializes* "SPELL: ALLIGATOR" *spells it wrong* "IT'S GETTING DAAARKER!". I still don't know if he's supposed to be hostile or what, but it's his cave and we need to respect his wishes, I guess. -Blood n' Guts - like an Epyx "-Games" game but feudal and brutal! Pick your brute and face off against other trogs in such events as the Cat Toss, distance leaping from a 3-storey tower, chugging ale, rolling a boulder faster/over your opponent, and other tasteful stuff. It's well-done and a fun 2-player addition to the usual skiing and diving stuff. -Dream House - taking a different direction here, this is a quality title that lets you select from a choice of empty houses to furnish, paint, landscape, etc. Each house contains a few rooms and there are even assets like a TV, fireplace, birdcage, etc. that feature sound and animation. I think C64 fans in general could dig this title that was probably aimed toward little girls, if they're looking for something chill. Or you could put fireplace and candle fires all over the place, it's your dream house!

Wow, what a list and a totally awesome trip down memory lane!!! I truly loved my C-64 and remembered begging my parents for one although I REALLY had a huge challenge in trying to explain to them that I also needed a disc drive to really do anything worthwhile with this early computer - what a tough sell that was(!!!) but I am truly thankful to this day for parents indulging on me in such a way given their limited income at the time. I'm curious if you ever played "Shamus" and its sequel "Shamus Case 2" which I believe was even better than the original? Also, "Dr. J vs. Larry Bird" was another great title that sucked up SO much of time back in the day. Anyway, thank you so much once again!!!

Crazy list! It's so educational to see this. My C64 experience as a kid was 95% whatever bootleg copies my dad brought home. Everyone can remember how impossible most of these games were without the manual, and all I had to go on with most games was a label with the title scribbled on in marker. My hands down #1 game by FAR is Crossroads. It's essentially Wizards of Wor (even the enemies are the same), but ten times the size and speed. It's amazing to see the C64 pull off that many moving objects at once and barely slow down. It's also 2 player co-op, THE most fun co-op you'll ever have on the system. Check out a footage video and download an emulated copy. Once you play it, you'll never go back to Wizards of Wor. The reason you hardly ever see it mentioned is that it was never really commercially released (to my knowledge). It was distributed on a home brew game disk that came with Compute's! Gazette, one of the popular American magazines of the 80s for the C64. It's just even more amazing that an amateur coded the whole thing as a free tie-in. They even included all the raw code in the back if you felt like typing the entire thing out! Maniac Mansion was one of the first games to freak me out. I was 8 at the time, and I considered it a horror game at the time because I was constantly scared of my characters being captured. The adrenaline when I dashed down the halls to safe rooms was unreal. It was only years later that I learned from a hint book about the loose brick that let you out of the dungeon. At the time, I thought you were permanently stuck down there! Additional trivia: it was the very first known instance of a video game using the term "cutscene". I want to go check out Project Firestart now! Looks like the great great Grandfather of System Shock. Good thing I missed it as a kid. If Maniac Mansion freaked me out, imagine what Firestart would have done to me. Archon was some of the best 2 player competitive. Although the balance moderately favored the evil team since all their shots were faster and the phoenix sucked. Spy vs Spy was the best 2 player competitive...up until someone realized how easy it was to stalemate every game. If you fell behind and the other player was going to win, you just spammed traps everywhere. It was impossible to go hunt down and pick up trap-counter items faster than the other player could spam traps. Sure the spammer would never win, but neither would the other player. Spam traps until the time ran out. Beachhead 2 was forbidden in my house by my mother. The violence was just too brutal with all those screams! My parents refused to give me any answers for Carmen Sandiego games. "Go look it up in the encyclopedias! It's what we bought them for!" 50 Mission Crush is one I would throw in. It was basically a turn based version of Ace of Aces, where you managed a B17 bomber and its entire crew. Felt kind of like wartime Oregon Trail where you named the crew after people you know and see who survived until the end. That's all my memories!

About halfway through the video so far. Being introduced to a lot of titles, but I’m also surprised how many of these I had as a kid. I recall my Dad got a couple boxes worth of C64 disks from a couple guys he worked with, mostly bootleg compilations, and as a result we had probably a few hundred games. Mostly rubbish, but in that wondrous mine of floppies were numerous diamonds to be found, and as a kid I loved pouring through that mass of disks seeking those gems.
