In this Photohsop tutorial you'll learn how to extend backgrounds in Photoshop using the new Generative Expand feature that uses AI to flawlessly extend your photo and create new pixels. Unlike past methods that required you to have pixels to sample from, this new method allows you to have total flexibility with how your backgrounds are extended.

Your tutorials are so much easier to follow and understand than Adobe's. Thank you!

Thank for posting this great video and explanation of how to use this tool, you're the first photographer on YT that I've seen demonstrate blending two halves of a photo together to get a better result. Having said all of that I can`t really see me using this tool at the moment because it still only generates in low resolution, so you couldn't really use this on a photo you intend to print, its only really useful for posting on social media, as far as I've been led to believe. I dont know whether Adobe are ever going to upgrade this tool to higher resolutions, so like Generative Fill I believe at the moment this is still a bit `gimmicky`! Thanks once again though for you're great explanation of this PS Tool. Cheers Brendan from the UK

Ya that is a fair point. I find if the area you are extending is out of focus it can still look quite convincing but anything closer to focus does look like a dead giveaway that its not the original. Im sure this will be a change in the future as the models improve. Personally Ive mostly been using generative expand in my images for significant straightening. That way the image remains the same dimensions. So small areas around the edges are filled in and its hardly noticeable, unlike when 50% of the image is AI filled as in these extending examples. However, its still pretty darn impressive as is and can only get better!

@@BrendanWilliamsTutorials Thanks for coming back to me on this. I saw a video where somebody showed Adobes T&C`s and all it says in there is they may offer higher resolutions in the future and I think something about there being `credits` attached to use. I hope Adobe do work on better resolutions though, because I`ve got a number of photos I`d love to expand and print out! Cheers Brendan

Thanks for the video Brendan. Any way to use generate expand with picture quality equal to the original? The expanded area is typically low resolution and low quality.

Not that I am currently aware of. In large areas it only seems to work convincingly if the area is slightly out of focus. Large areas needing crisp detail to extend don’t seem to work. Perhaps that will be a change as the models improve 🤞

excellent post! Question: the content credentials is embedded with the file when exported? If that is the case: applies to JPG's, PS, TIFF and PNGs's files? In other words the recipient has access to those credentials ? thanks!

Yes it should be. However, if you just look at the exported file info on your computer you probably won't see it. But if people used Adobe Content Credentials they would see that info. So depending on whether a client is actively scanning for it, it could still go undetected technically.

@@BrendanWilliamsTutorials thanks! I suppose is a way to detect and 'fight" AI in instances that perhaps shouldn't be use like Journalism, wildlife or documentary work...🤔

The resolution is so low that I don`t use this AI crap anymore. It destroys my photos
