Interesting episode. I'm one of the Kiss fans who actually like Music from the Elder. I think it has some really good melodic tracks. I love "A World without Heroes," "Under the Rose," and Ace's "Dark Light," has a frenetic guitar solo. "The Oath," is a great hard rocker, also, with Stanley belting out the vocals. I definitely enjoy this album better than the poppy Unmasked album.

I think Forbidden is way better than it gets credit for. I did intentionally skip it for years, having read horror stories about 'Rap Sabbath' and all sorts of things. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me and I'm all the happier for it. It's not a bad album at all, and that dreaded rap section? Spoken word interlude in the middle of the opening song. That's all. Takes a few seconds, it's over before you know it. No, it's not one of their best albums, but I don't hesitate for a second to rank it higher than Technical Ecstasy, Never say Die, Born Again and maybe even 13. It does sound bad, but that alone isn't enough to discredit the whole album.
@HeathenDance
@HeathenDance Жыл бұрын
I salute your comment. It's actually a great classic heavy metal album, specially for 90's standards. When even Thrash Metal was put aside, and we observed the explosion of the subgenres. The drum work is great, the final track, the power ballad "Kiss of Death" is original, dark, and very well composed. And the song "Shaking Off the Chains" has some of the most bad ass riffs that I ever heard on a (classic) heavy metal band. As for the Rap section, to be honest, there are songs from Pantera which sound a lot more like Rap than that first track. Specially from the "Vulgar" and "Driven" albums. And I love Pantera!
@MayhemmiGunn
@MayhemmiGunn Жыл бұрын
@@HeathenDance You're right with the 90s standards. Imagine how it would have been had they done what a great deal of bands from the 'old guard' did around that same time and gone down that tough-guy route, just because that was the flavor of the day. I'm glad they stuck to their guns and just made an honest heavy metal record. I wish that the circumstances would have been better, maybe they could have made it better, but it's for sure not the stinker that its reputation suggests. Plenty of good song on there, and Tony Martin is as good as ever.
@HeathenDance
@HeathenDance Жыл бұрын
@@MayhemmiGunn Agreed on everything you wrote. There's also a decent amount of variety within the album, with the songs sounding different between themselves. This is something that I also appreciate. But many people prefer repetitive padrons. It's not by chance that Metallica is so popular. On the riff department, you get more variety in ONE SINGLE 80's Megadeth album, than in the entire James Hetfield's catalogue. As a musician, I'm not even joking. This is the truth. Number of notes being used, scales, etc. And I love Metallica. But personal tastes and objective criticism reviews are different things. Yet, James Hetfield is pretty much untouchable and worshipped by everyone. Unlike Kirk Hammett, who is constantly bashed. It is what it is!
@MayhemmiGunn
@MayhemmiGunn Жыл бұрын
@@HeathenDance Haha, you're right, it's impossible to please everyone. Just like the post-Ozzy albums 'just don't sound like Sabbath' but the main criticism for 13? 'It's all just a rehash of their old stuff' or 'it sounds like a Sabbath cover band'. Some bands get shit for sounding the same, while others get shat on for changing too much. That just tought me at an early age to not le anyone else's opinion affect my listening experience, and just appreciate songs/albums/bands for what they are and judge them for what they mean and do for me. Variety surely is the spice of life!

I have to completely disagree with you on Slang! It’s one of my favorite Def Leppard albums! I love how they stripped back and got a little dark with it. They’ve said before that it was really a case of them making the album they wanted to make, not what the record company wanted, and I think you can really feel that. I especially love the deluxe edition with all of the demos and outtakes! But I will give you the criticism that the title track doesn’t really fit the rest of the album. It changed a lot when compared to the demo on the deluxe version. Almost sounds like they were forced to create at least one radio-friendly single, whether it really went over well that way or not. Blaspheme! You Blasphemer! How dare you tey to try to even think "Born Again" even sniffing this list!.....🤣🤣 I've loved that album since it came out. The production is crap, but there are so many gems out there with bad production "The Legacy" from Testament being an easy target. The songs on Born Again are very strong and different than any other Sabbath album. I get mad when I hear Ian or Tony talk bad about the album, they are blasphemous too. I gotta admit I do not own any of the other albums you talked about. I jumped out of most of those bands long before these albums dropped, or some bands I was never into. For example, the first time I heard the song Animal on Mtv, I knew I was not going to be buying the Hysteria album....🤣 Dokken, I quit after Back for the Attack. Was never really a Kiss fan, even as a kid in the 70's. But I did keep up with them through Lick it Up. I liked Alice Cooper up through the mid to late 80's. Metallica......😬 Aerosmith has been a disappointment for many decades now, but boy were they good when I saw them live in 87.

The overarching tie here is metal and hard rock bands trying (badly) to cope with a post-"Smells Like Teen Spirit" world in the 1990s and early 2000s. Not a good time to be metal unless you were extreme metal, progressive metal, or in Germany.

Good idea for a video. I think Aerosmith's "Music From Another Dimension!" is even worse. Even Carrie Underwood's vocals couldn't save their duet on that album. I also thought Def Leppard's "Slang" was disappointing. But, they kind of came back, with "Euphoria". The main problem with Metallica's "St. Anger", is the bad production. I remember actually liking a lot of the songs on the "Some Kind Of Monster" documentary.

Wish they would have hung it up and took up golf many moons ago! Here are some of mine: AC/DC - Fly On The Wall (Decent, but I still think it is their worst when compared to their entire studio discography.) Aerosmith - Music From Another Dimension! (Huge disappointment for me after the hype leading up to its release.) Blind Guardian - Legacy Of The Dark Lands (Not really a true Blind Guardian Album. Just frontman Hansi Kursch and one other member. It was their Orchestral album project they had been talking about and working on for years. Nothing metal about this. If you like Classical music, you might like this one more. It's just that it's not metal and never claimed to be. They should've released this without the Blind Guardian name on it. Because it is, it gets put in with the rest of their albums.) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Mardi Gras (Of course their final album is the worst with Fogerty only writing half the songs, which are the best ones.) The Cars - Door To Door (Tried to be too slick. Huge letdown after their resurgence from the Heartbeat City era of the mid '80s.) Def Leppard - X (I don't know but it was too Pop, even for latter day Def Leppard. Prior to that album, I thought their worst was Slang. But over the years, I've learned to enjoy Slang much more than I originally did when it was released.) Dio - Lock Up The Wolves (One or two good songs, but nothing memorable. At least with all the other albums, there is something memorable about each one of them I can recall without having to go back to it. With Lock Up The Wolves, nothing stays with me, even the couple songs I consider to be good.) The Doors - Full Circle (Final actual album, not counting An American Prayer in which the 3 remaining Doors put music to Morrison's spoken words and poetry.) Grave Digger - Liberty Or Death (One of my favorite German Power Metal Bands. This one is my least favorite album by them. Nothing really memorable or catchy about this one. All their other albums over their entire Discography have something I like.....songwriting, catchy riffs, great choruses, etc. None of that gets my attention on Liberty Or Death.) Helloween - Chameleon (Awful. Though, Pink Bubbles Go Ape could give it a run for its money too.) Iced Earth - Plagues Of Babylon (Not going to say anything about Schaffer's stupidity and politics. But this album is the least memorable of their entire discography, especially after their previous album Dystopia, which I thought was great.) Iron Maiden - Virtual XI (There are a couple songs I like, but overall, their worst. Maybe would've been better if Dickinson was around to record it.) Judas Priest - Demolition (Tim Ripper Owens 2nd and final studio album as frontman. Nothing really his fault. The songwriting just wasn't there. Of the Rob Halford fronted albums, Rocka Rolla, Nostradamus and Turbo are my least favorites. Depending on my mood, any 3 of those could be considered the worst of his.) Led Zeppelin - Coda (If you don't count this album then it would be In Through The Out Door.) Megadeth - Super Collider (Dave's attempt at going Hard Rock instead of Metal??? I don't know, but it was bad and a huge letdown after the previous couple of good/great albums that preceded it in Endgame and Thirteen. Thankfully, Dave got back on track after Super Collider with Dystopia and The Sick, The Dying And The Dead!) Metallica - St. Anger (I agree with you and most Metallica fans. Tin cans for drums, subpar vocals, awfully mastered and mixed, and nothing catchy. Too much angst.)
