As a teenager and in my early 20s, I used to go to friends' houses and actively listen to music together. That rarely happens when you grow up.
@arzabael
@arzabael 8 күн бұрын
Its not because you grew up, that would mean people are still doing that, the reason it doesn’t happen anymore is because while there use to be radio books music and maybe TV shows or movies if you were lucky, now it’s computers gaming and every show and movie you could ever want a click a way, so what happened is the amount of sensory overload that’s possible from the things we do got increased by the new things out there to do and music and listening to it being as fun as watching a movie is only reserved now for people who were around in that time. I grew up up in the 90s and can say the time of enjoying an album as if you were watching a play was still very real, but even I have trouble not having my attention taken away to something else when I’m actively listening to music

@@michaelwills1926 thanks. I actually take back one aspect of that because there are probably plenty of people born after the computer era who can put a music album on and have as much fun as anything just “grooving out”. It really has become too much of a background thing for people, I wish we could go back to forty minute albums, twenty minutes a side, where you really take in the whole album experience as one like it’s a story and everyone has heard it and knows the different parts and you can talk about certain parts like it’s a rock opera.

You can listen to as much music as you want if you have no family, kids etc because apart from your job you have no other obligations of a daily nature. I used to listen to music most of the day until I got married and started a family. Nowadays I still listen to music daily but I simply cannot allocate as much time as I used to because I need to make time for my family and kid and because I have more obligations and things to do at home related to the family than when I was single.

Grew up in a house of music - by 8am on weekends, my dad would have records spinning all day until 5pm or so. I didn’t hear broadcasters for sports until I was 17…. He always played music during the games lol😂 I listen to music most of the day as I work from home, but it’s a lot of ‘familiar’ albums, because like you both said… hard to digest it correct while the brain is elsewhere. Great vid as usual !

I totally get it. I listen to music everyday. I think people forget that we can buy an album, listen to it, not listen to the actually physical copy again for a little while but may also be cranking that same album in the car on Spotify. I try to listen to all my albums as much as I can but I also stream a bunch. I buy physical copies of everything I enjoy musically because I want to support the artist as best as I can. It's nice knowing I have everything I want physically as well for when streaming crashes or becomes unreasonably priced like other streaming services have headed.

I listen to around 2000 artist/bands, and own probably 5000 cds… I still get into new bands weekly and buy new cds.. I can’t go one day without playing cds.. especially in the car driving.. a year ago I had a chance to buy a newer car, but because it didn’t have a cd player, I went with an older car, cause I need my cd player for my drives.. I do go years without listening to certain albums cuz I have so much, but every once in a while, I’ll dig out an older album and listen to it

Some other people are buying more music than they can possibly listen to, and so what ? If they love collecting music, who cares ? Brendon says he's listening to music all day long, and as we see, he's able to work full time AND post every day, so yes, I think he's able to enjoy and digest his collection. Personnaly I like his channel because I find it inspiring to see someone as passionate, and to see someone who lives the very life they really want to live. It is so cool !

Why can't people understand that you are just a collector of music? There is a host of things that one can collect and music is one thing. Unlike most things one can collect, music is a collectable that the collector can enjoy using. I listen to music when I'm not on the Internet doing stuff, but I use music to get to sleep, to wake up, or to get pumped up before doing stuff. For Anthony to do videos that he dislikes doing for us is really cool. I enjoy the videos he does with you and now I have a greater appreciation for him and the videos. I will compromise my music listening time to watch your channel, just so I can listen to you two on your channel. I'm okay with that. Music albums is something that requires to be organized, like stamp collecting. I enjoy that and its allows to check out album covers and read booklets or music track listings. Sometimes I'll play an album then, while I'm doing that. I imagine when I finally have time to create a database to keep track of everything while I imput the data I'll listen to music then too. I think a more important question is: How do you know what albums you have without a database and not purchase duplicates?

Hey Brendon, I don’t care what people say or why they would care whether you listen to all that you buy or not. I used to listen to music all day long and then there was a point in which I felt this is too much..so, I stopped listening to music when I took walks, and then I felt exhausted by the western music..pop rock.. anything!! I stopped listening to that music but I spent a whole week ..even a few days more.. listening to singing bowls, afro-percussion music or nothing.. it was a very good experience for me to learn how to add more silence and detach myself from my need to listen to music, constantly. Clams feed during high tide, that should make them happy. When the tide goes out, alas, no food. The phrase “as happy as a clam” is derived from the full phrase “happy as a clam at high water.” Clams are collected during the low tide; during the high tides, they are safe from fishermen.

I think there is a distinction to be made (and probably deeper conversation) between listening to music and really listening to music. What I mean by that is, I also work from home and sure I can listen to 10 cds a day while working yet how much do I actually listened to and absorb/digest? If you ask me a the end of day to comment on what I listened to (especially if its new to me) there is very little I retained outside of the occasional song that caught my attention since I'm concentrating on work or whatever. If you are strictly listening to music you know, well then fine you're on autopilot. However if you are in discovery mode you need to avoid distractions and listen to it and it is in those situations that I struggle with, with the limited time that I have outside my daily responsibilities (life in general). Nowadays I listened 70% new music (new to me).

I understand the topic of the video, but my reaction to this is who gives a fuck what people think you should not have to justify if you listen to all your music or whether you don’t, unfortunately there’s a lot of people who look at those who have a lot of stuff as being hoarders you’re a collector. I’m a collector. Nothing wrong with that. we love music it’s a passion and I’m not giving it up for anybody or anything. I go into my music room and it is my safe place place to relax chill and my dog comes up and jumps on my lap and we listen to music together.

@ yeah I understand what you’re saying. It just irritates me sometimes when people question stuff like that it’s like they’re bothered by it. We all do what we wanna do in life and as long as we’re not harming ourselves or each other, that’s all that matters I’ll be honest with you I could not imagine life without listening to some music every day. Some people ask me would you rather lose your site completely as you know that I’m legally blind or would you rather go deaf? I think we both know the answer to that question if I had a choice, I would never wanna be deaf because then that would take away the true love of my life, which is music

I googled it😂 The phrase "happy as a clam" originates from the idea that clams are most secure and "happy" when the tide is high, as they are less likely to be disturbed by predators or harvested by humans during high tide, hence the full phrase often being "happy as a clam at high water." You're welcome!😂

For me, the question is less how much music is listened to, and more how much music is loved. My mind can't fathom the people who make lists of their hundred favorite albums each year, or who have the wall full of thousands of albums. There simply isn't that much music out there at any given time I feel connected to. I don't have the bandwidth or energy to love that many things... or people.

Happy as a clam is said to come from the fuller version of the phrase, “happy as a clam at high water.” Clams can really only be dug up by humans during low tide. So, when the tide is high, clams are ecstatic that they can’t be plucked. Some sources say that clams kind of look like they're smiling, but I'm leaning towards the first story for the origin rather than the latter. The earliest known instance of “happy as a clam” is from 1833 in two separate citations: “The Harpe’s Head; A Legend of Kentucky” by James Hall and “Atkinsons’s Casket” by Samuel C. Atkinson. Incidental or not, both were published in Philadelphia. And the first time the full phrase was used was six years later in the Baltimore newspaper “The Sun” on July 19, 1839.

The quote Happy as a clam came/comes from early part of the19th century and is significance comes from at high tide when clams are free from attacks of their predators. At low tide, clams can be easily dug up & consumed while at high tide this is much more difficult. This is probably why the high tide is the happiest part of their day as they do not have to fear of being eaten by other animals or people. What that quote is saying is a way to say you are happy & content.

I get asked the same thing about music and about reading books and I often go to a quote from Star Trek "If something's important you make the time" Reading books and listening to music are important to me. No one asks my friend how he finds the time to play golf or go to the gym. Those things are important to him so he finds the time. Of course, they still listen, but unless your retired and have 16 hours a day to listen, im guessing theres alot of skimming over albums to refresh their memories if there is a show abt certain bands or albums. I also find i now like the shows from the people who dont have a ton of subscribers. Because if i comment on the topic, ill get an actual answer or comment back. Not just a generic ❤ or a thumbs up. People’s income levels and responsibilities are different as well. What might seem like a lot to one person is not to another. That’s why I said it’s all about priorities. You can go out Friday night to the bar and blow $100 on drinks or wake up Saturday morning and go to the record store and spend $100 on music. Both make the person happy. I just like to have something to show for my money spent. And like you said people can do what they want. So the guy who likes to go drinking shouldn’t have anything said about him just as the music collector shouldn’t as well. And yes jealousy plays into it as well even if it’s just someone thinks we’re wasting money because they don’t have money to waste.

Also between work and settling in from the work day, not a lot of time to listen to music. My day to day for work does not allow for music listening to the extent I would like. Then the weekends, have to do adulting stuff which leaves less time for music. It's hard, many times I will get an album and it will get only 1-2 listens through.

Just wondering...Nevermore went down like a lead balloon, have you listened to Steven Wilson, Devin Townsend or my fellow Aussies Voyager...got so many other bands for you to check out...I like you am addicted to music & so many styles ❤from Adelaide Australia

I’ve been checking out and trying Nevermore for over 15 years. For whatever reason I like Jeff Loomis solo, and Warell Dane as part of Sanctuary but Nevermore hasn’t clicked. I like Devin as part of Vai but not solo, I like Steven doing his remixes but not part of his band or solo. But when I check things out it’s not just one and done. I come at it from all angles and check out multiple albums, timeframes, different projects, etc. So I already didn’t expect for Nevermore to do anything but because of the recent Warell Dane solo album I picked up and since Nevermore is reforming I rechecked them out prior to your inquiry. I prefer more of the traditional 80’s Trash sound and that’s not Nevermore. They took on that 90’s Metal sound and only ended up closer to traditional Trash on the last album. But as I always say, never say never because who knows, Nevermore could click at some point.

Exactly. I don't understand this idea people have that you have to listen to all your CDs all the time. Different stuff for different moods, and yeah, sometimes you don't return to something for years.

I used to listen to music all days in the past, now i take breaks and also enjoy the silence. I was also a hard music collector. At some point huge quantities of music somehow started to bother me and i found it overwhelming and pointless. I still buy cd's but in small amounts, maybe 10 per year and i sold previous big collection cause it became simply too much for me. I mean, i totaly understand the collecting of music, i do respect that enthusiasm of owning a huge music library, i realy like yours, but personaly it seems i drown more into "less is more" style. To each its own, i would say...

I keep 3 piles. Unplayed. Keepers. And traders. And it kinda sucks that the unplayed pile just keeps growing. Must have 20 25 CDs in that unplayed pile. If I had a CD walkman, then maybe that pile would get shorter. And that's why I tend to play way too many minidiscs while out and about.

I can't listen to that much music as I am very picky about what type of music and albums I like. I love music a lot, but my likes are not massive compared to people who are collectors. I also like other things like sports, movies, tv shows, video games, and more. I don't feel the need to have music playing 24/7, but anyone who knows me will say I am crazy about the music that I like. If I was listening to music all day every day, then I would have no choice but to broaden my musical interests, just to keep it fresh and exciting. I had never been a huge collector of music in the past, but I decided to give it a go recently and It can be a fun hobby but I want to collect things that are both worth something to me and also have meaning to others incase I ever had to get rid of it. I got in to Spotify many years ago, and I love it for when I am out and about, but it has taken away some of the connections for me of trying to find or buy new music. Going into a record store and buying a new cd from a band I love was a great thing. I now I might not know about these things as much these days. Also, I feel that most of the bands I am in to are either not making new music or the music they make does not interest me. It is like the creative spark has been taken away form them. I thought I loved music a lot, but listening to you talk about music, I realised there are people who are way more into music than me. I am just as, if not more passionate about my fav bands and albums, but not as much for music as a whole. I think that is me for everything I love. I like what I like and know alot about the music I like. To an average music fan, I seem like a crazy music lover, but in reality, I am just an average music fan who gets very passionate about certain types of music. This is why I decided to try collecting but not go too crazy. Might seem strange for someone with 13,000 CDs, but I also don't have the space for a huge collection anyway.

Yes, how can you listen to so much music? I’ve never seen anyone get as many CDs and records as you do. Too much of a good thing it’s too much of a good thing. I love going to the movies, but I couldn’t go every day to the theater even if I had a free ticket. It’d be too overwhelming for me. I like to listen to music for a good amount of time during the week. But then I also like to go out to the movies go to the GYM and exercise go out to eat socialize with friends. Of course I have to fit in going to a job.. it sounds like an addiction it might be healthy but. What do you do once you listen to so many CDs in a week. You must have now 13,000 CDs. How can you go back and ever listen to any of the CDs you bought when you keep buying so many new ones. How can the music be exciting when you listen to so much

I wake up hours before the rest of my family, and I put on my headphones within 10 minutes of waking up. I also work from home and have a job that does not require a ton of phone calls, so I listen to music all day every workday. If I am watching sports or a movie, I almost always watch it on mute with subtitles and listen to music at the same time. I don't do a whole lot of gaming, but when I do, I will generally listen to music while I play. When I drive, I listen to music. When I spend time with my family at home, I will put on some music unless it interferes with some other activity we are doing together. I don't understand why anyone would ever want to not be listening to music.

Here's the thing... When I buy an album, I have to listen to the album at least 4 times before it becomes familiar, and my favourite tracks start to emerge... Tracks from said album that I don't like at first can become favourites later on down the line... This relationship with an album CANNOT be formed in one or two listens ... Our brains simply don't work that way!

John we all hear things differently and process information differently. Yes some albums take longer to absorb and others don’t. But just because you enjoy and digest music one particular way doesn’t mean the rest do it the same way. Have an open mind…by the way my mind Rocks! 👍

It's an addiction dude. Get help. Just stating my opinion here, not attacking. Even if you retired from work and listened 12 hours per day you'd still never get through everything you have. Right now you're spending all your time looking for and buying more music, instead of listening to what you already have. You act shocked and think it's weird people question you? No, you're weird, not them. And acting angry and defensive about it on your videos and comments section is not a good look. If it bothers you so much just ignore it. Still like your videos though dude so despite being weird it doesn't totally ruin it for me.

How is collecting weird? Brendan likes music and as he states he listens to it to wake up and then throughout the day. Brendan also has stated that if he I in a certain mood he can go and pick out something that clicks with him for that day depending on how he is feeling. I know you'll probably say well then he can stream it but that's not the same. It just isn't.

Indeed. The truth is, there's really no need to own that amount of music, especially if you want to give it the time and attention it deserves. I understand collecting music one likes, but when it's taken to excess (collecting for collecting's sake) or more about the thrill of the hunt or it's taking over your life then there's a real problem there. Personally, I find people with excessively large collections a bit sad and I care less about the size of someone's collection and more about how much they care about or understand the music they do listen to/own.

@thekissofvenus5711How judgemental. There's so much amazing music out there, in so many different genres. Do you really think a person can't collect thousands of albums over a period of decades, and still take the time to appreciate it? It doesn't mean you listen to everything all the time.

No, he does not. If he listened to 5 albums a day without repeating anything that would be 12,775 albums in 7 years. I assume there are days that more than 5 are listened to and sometimes less. Some people have music as a main priority in their life.

So what's your point? Does Brendan have to listen to every single CD he owns regularly? I think it's cool that if he is feeling a certain way he can just go and grab a CD to listen to depending on his mood. We all have different likes and Hobbies, Im sure most of us have things we collect that others find is too much for them but not for us. Nothing wrong with his awesome music collection.

I agree. I can only assume those getting defensive in the comments section have fallen down a similar rabbit hole. The response about some making music a main priority in their lives is quite telling. It almost makes me wonder what they'd have in their lives without it, and the picture that paints is almost always quite bleak.
@doopum1

@thekissofvenus5711 I think of music, in the same way people think about having children. It is very important to me. If you have children, then imagine taking them out of your life, and how would that feel? Bleak? Probably. You said it as an insult or criticism toward something we love, but I have a feeling that you haven't thought about it in the same way toward something you love. Music is the only thing that hasn't let me down. It's a great rabbit hole to fall into.

@@wee-weeble49 You must not know many folks or at least many music buffs because this is a common practice for music lovers. Umm, maybe the music would distract you from the snoring by your side. Ever think of that? You read through this entire comment thread and discover how people can forge a mindset that the only way to look at things is the way I.I.I.I.,,,, do! The reason people might need music to get relaxed and help them sleep is to get them out of their thoughts or anxieties that might be occupying their mind.. or maybe they live in a noisy apartment complex or neighborhood and it helps them tune out that noise. Or maybe they love music and the joy of it actually helps them sleep well!
