I also remember this happening in Rhyl too. I was driving past there at the time as well. I lived in Rhyl at the time but not that area. Then the asda in Kinmel bay flooded and I lived down the road from there and loads of people from my school got taken out to go to their houses and prepare incase of flooding. We had dozens of sandbags and it actually nearly flooded our house. I remember my mum kept panicking about the furniture because we'd only just moved in.

Great video. It sorted of looked like Galveston Texas 12 hours before Hurricane Ike came ashore. Never seen surge like that in GB and I was born in Cardiff. I now live 20 miles north of Galveston, Tx.

Wow thats massive isn't it? Amazing they built a road so close to the sea. I'd hate to see what happens in a king tide. It gave those streets a bloody good wash down anyway. Here where I live in Australia we won't drive thru 6 inches of running water because we know we will get washed away.

@hebneh9 жыл бұрын
That was exciting to watch, but it certainly seems to me that the area should've been entirely closed off - no pedestrians and no traffic. One unexpectedly large wave can knock people down immediately and injure or kill them, particularly because the water is so cold. Anyone ignorant enough to have left a parked car there - well - too bad for them. Presumably this surge was forecast in advance.
@brenpebbs9 жыл бұрын
I'm personally glad the area wasn't totally sealed off to pedestrians (that would be impossible to achieve anyway). Life is full of risks and the day we try to remove all risk by way of some omnipotent governance is the day we stop living. This storm was superbly forecast and gave everyone who witnessed it a marvel at nature (except the Mercedes van owner who clearly missed the memo...)

think this time was the last time I saw snow in winter, we drove to London in half the normal amount of time and spent the whole day mildly drunk and stoned in every London museum staring at exibhits for far too long and laughing at the slipping ducks, getting attacked by a quirrel, watching cars sliding and crashing with 6ft snow drifts all the way there only to just write a rude name in the snow upon arrival.....was a genuinely fun day

@brenpebbs11 жыл бұрын
Don't confuse storm surge with waves. The video isn't showing impressive waves, they're pretty small in fact. It's the height of the tide itself that is very unusual, overtopping the walls even without any waves on top. Storm surge is the elevated height of the tide and nothing to do with waves themselves.

@brenpebbs11 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The wind was actually turning from west to north-west as the high tide hit North Wales and the north-west. That had the effect of "driving" the waves and storm surge into the coast.
