This has been a wonderful discovery for the Vigil descendants. I am a professional genealogist and descended myself from three English colonists to Virginia in the 1600’s who also were descended from King Alfonso IX of Castile by his granddaughter Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I of England. Many Americans are descended from the Castilian royal family through “gateway” colonists just like Francisco Montes Vigil. Such a great discovery!

I am a descendant of these people. To call you about two years ago after I spoke to the historian of New Mexico. This is so fascinating. So you have to know when New Mexico when it was newsfeed became part of the United States I recently learned that the Americans made the Spanish women drop their second name. So that's why it went from Montez Vigil to just playing vigil. Just playing vigil. That's supposed to be pla ym. There are some Valdez's related to this and Herrera

So Fascinating to hear about my relatives who came from Spain. My Dad and his Sisters were born in San Luis Colorado. I have seen another book published that traced our Family Ancestry, and to see my Dads name and my aunts and Grandmas name all in print is amazing. I will try to get this new book that's out to add to our Family .

So if you do more digging and try to reach out to this gentleman who wrote the book but I talked to the historian for the state of New Mexico. Names on their period but not everybody gets to access them. However one of the things you need to know is this too our family the vigils that literally means watchmen in Spanish were one of the 1st nights in all of Europe. That there is a knighthood that still exists from this and it's been in existence for hundreds of years.

I also want you to know that after the Queen Isabella kicked out the Arab mores from Spain that's how Spain became an empire. They kicked out the Arabs they had this inquisition. They were the first nation to know to have a gun. Yes this is true. When they came unlike the pilgrims they came with animals they came with more food. To build and stay longer. They came with the best men that they could. But what's even more interesting is some of the medicinal things that they brought with them. But to this day and after Queen Isabella everybody in every other household in Europe the ruling governments wanted to intermarry with Queen Isabella's children. So our Spanish DNA lives on in pretty much every royal household to this day. I want to thank Mr Cruz for the research he did. It got me to read as much as I could for several years. Including reading things out of Spain and Europe and learning all of this. When people put down us Hispanics here in this country remind yourself this is what we are descendant from this is what we formed this is what we created. We know that there's the dark side to what the Spanish did. But our DNA was what's the most powerful government on the planet. So much so that all these people wanted to marry within the Spanish homes. King Henry the 8th married one of her granddaughters of Queen Isabella. When she could not produce a child he did not kill her like he did his other wives. He was afraid to inflict the wrath of Spain upon his nation. About that one for a moment. But remember this. Until 1957 Hispanics were not allowed to vote in this country. Last group of people to be allowed to vote. It wasn't until the civil rights laws and a Hispanic lawyer from Texas that challenged this in the Supreme Court did our families get the right to vote. That's why many of your grandparents and great grandparents did not speak about politics because they weren't allowed to be involved with it. And that's your American history for the day. But Hi Cousins there's a lot of us.

I'm a descendent of Francisco Montes Vigil..also.. I've noticed that some Native Americans carry The Vigil Sur Name...I'm wondering If they are also related and If Anyone knows anything about it.?.I I would love to learn more..That would be great..Take Care
@tomjmartinez4 жыл бұрын
Native Americans who have the Vigil name, or any other surname, whether it is Spanish or other European name, usually got it from one of their ancestors who was adopted, traded, captured or stolen from their tribe. It was a very common practice for Spanish families to have a Native American, sometimes more than one, as a servant (slave) of the family. They were baptized and given the family surname. Most of them were set free when they were older and had their own families carrying on their new surname. If the servant was a female, she sometimes had children from her European master. These children would have DNA from both Europeans and Native Americans. In this case they would have at least a DNA connection to the Vigil clan, or any other one.

@@tomjmartinez If you have ancestors who are Spanish and New Mexico or anywhere in the southwest you have indigenous DNA. They didn't bring their wives with them or their daughters at first period we're all the first people literally. But it is harder to find more information on the native side there just were not records. We've run into that on my dad's side. My grandma we can go all the way back now to like 1400 in Spain. Monte's vigil our relative our shared relative if you dig a little bit further you can go back to about 1400 1300. Your hitch they are from ASTRUIS Spain. They originated from a place called OVIEDO Spain but on my dad's side on the native side we can only go back about 4 maybe five generations. There's more native on his side. The only reason why you can find more records on his Spanish side is because the church kept a lot of records. And the more prominent the person in your family tree was like our shared great great great great great great great great great great grandfather. They were a prominent person so they were more records about this person and their family.

I don't know how to tell you this but the names we spell here in the United States are spelled differently in Spain. A lot of the names are changed. There's AV might have been AB or if you go to Spain you will not hear the name Martinez there's no easy on the names. That was added when they came to the New World. For a long time if you were born in Spain for example you were considered a Spaniard. You're born in the United States with Spanish DNA we were called Spanish.
