Sorry, but I would argue about that. They are built tough, but there are also built to torture. In fact, I think we usually refer to them as torture sacks more than we referred to them as Alice packs. The packs that they have issued since my Army time in the 80s are far superior.

@@rockymntnliberty not sure what pack you are talking about. I was on active duty from 1982 - 2004. the only packs that I was issued, or I should say regularly issued, was a large Alice pack. now there was a time in the late 80's when the army gave certain units a Mountain pack. but as a paratrooper those didn't last more than a couple months as they could not be jumped safely.

Since you have the flex seal, here's a bit of tip from a construction worker. Spray the bottoms and backs of your carry cases (tools, personal belongings, etc). This is a PSA I did this to my Medium Alice pack, make sure to get all the factory rubberized coating off the lid before. My Alice pack had a lid that was just starting to peel and I tried all I could to get it off with about 25% of the lid still covered with the original rubber that wasn't ready to come off. The areas where the rubber was peeled off almost immediately after letting it sit for 24 hours it made it a lot easier to get the remaining old rubber off but you'll have to re apply to cover the areas that peeled off. Otherwise great solution.

I was really hoping to see a lid replacement. That said, if you're using flex seal, use the 'liquid'. The aerosol type is stiff and deteriorates quickly. In fact, not quite as 'quick and easy', but for a membrane repair, I recommend appx 60/40 flex seal/GE Silicone II(by volume), thinned with mineral spirits, to about thick latex paint consistency. This makes a really tough and flexible 100% waterproof membrane, with a very thin, lightweight application.

Thanks for your input I tried this hack and like you said the spray was brittle and cracked and flaked off. I figured I must have done something wrong and tried to do it again by first cleaning the surface with alcohol, but that doesn't help either. Thanks for your solution I'll try that.
@springbloom5940 Жыл бұрын
@@ldsphotodude49 Even applying straight silicone II, will give a pretty good result. You definitely want to back it with wax paper on the inside because its messy and then just apply some silicone, with a credit card or something. Only need a thin layer.

Back in the 80's/90's we would use the dip coating to reseal those lids and other worn pouches. It was sold in pint size cans and used to coat or recoat pliers or small tools used for electrical work. Pretty much the same thing but thicker because it's a non aerosol product.

Thank you for sharing another good use for FlexSeal. I would also like to share an idea I got from another KZbinr: using FlexSeal to apply a thin durable "grip tape" to AR magazines. I have used it on both steel mags and PMAGs and am quite happy with the results. Be sure to mask off enough of the top to ensure the FlexSeal does not rub inside the magazine well and hinder insertion/removal. Also, mask off enough of the bottom to ensure the floorplate can be removed. I have had good results with 3M blue painter's masking tape. If the PMAGs have a round-count window, mask that too. The FlexSeal seems to deaden and quiet down the noise the magazine makes when it hits something (gear, mag well, ground, etc), especially with a couple coats.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this- as U.S.G.I. waterproofed stuff- rucksacks, ponchos, etc.- ages and breaks down it smells like ass. Literally. In '99 I wore my old poncho-issued to me in the mid-'80s- to a very rainy bluegrass festival and I noticed people were giving me strange looks. Later I realized how bad my poncho smelled and I understood that people had been thinking that I shat myself. Then next time I had my rucks out of storage I noticed that they, too smelled like poo. This stuff had all been stored in dry conditions and had definitely not been exposed to any kind of bodily waste. Anyway it is bizarre.

Your absolutely correct about those rubberized inner liners smelling like vomit. They smell like that even when they are brand new. Good thing that smell doesn't get into your clothes when you stuff those liner bags. I tried baking soda and it worked to get rid of the smell. So no smell, but, had baking soda all over my gear. I guess the general rule of thumb is to get something, you have to give up something. Can't have your cake and eat it too. My ALICE large pack top flap deteriorated too. Along with a rain poncho. Flexseal to the rescue! Hope there is some OD Green color.

13 buck... Hobo waterproof works just fine too.. Acetone and silicon. Mix it that silicon have all melted.. Take paint brush and do how ever many times you like.. Everytime longer lasting waterproof but all so more rigid... Don't do too many times there is something like too rigid... Be sure what is the material where you are applying that.. Maybe do just little test first somewhere where you cant see so well.. Acetone might fuck up cheap plastic parts is some cheap stuff.. Use transparent uv resistant silicone and you are golden.. Now when i think of it might get cool color stuff if use some other color one.. How it might look if one color pack but uses 3 different silicone mixes... Might try someday.

I like to use Alice Chemical Suit Bags to carry sleeping bags on my Alice pack. Yes, I know the military issued sleep system bags, but the chem suit bags are usually cheaper, and well they are a “second cool” kind of bag, meaning I just like them. I just hit on the idea that flex seal would turn the chem suit bags into actual dry bags, since the bag has the same closure method as a dry bag. I may be wrong in that the flex seal may not appreciate the constant folding and rolling that goes along with opening and closing the bag.

I have a woodland poncho that is starting to loose the rubber coating, and I have an old OD poncho that nothing is left but the nylon that I’d like to revive. Thanks and Semper Fi

Don't waste your money on those waterproof "vomit" bags. Use heavy duty trash bags or ziplock bags to contain your gear in. Much cheaper and you will not cry once they tear, just grab another. A good, thick rubber type band will seal the bag. The other bags were not the right size for my large slice ruck.

I did this about a year ago using a can of Flexseal that I purchased on the clearance isle at Wallymart for about $7.00. The color that I bought happened to be very close to flat dark earth brown. It looked great and did a great job of restoring the top flap waterproofing. I recommend FS products after having used it successfully. I can say my experience was a positive one.

Forget about the old Alice packs, go no eBay and pickup a London Bridge Trading 8 or 10 pocket ruck. Puts the military issued ones to shame.

A bit odd that anyonyone wants to have water inside the two layers in the top. i just got a deal on a LC-1 and my plan is to rubberize the top and bottom of the top flap and also sew it shut. I made topographic maps (81C20). Why anyone wants to put ANYTHING in that stupid area is beyond me.

Question, how do you make the bag straps flexible again. My Alice Pack is in like mew condition but, the straps are not very flexible like yours. Is it due to heat or just not or never used? Please respond anyone.

Have a surplus French F1 day pack & exterior latex coating deteriorating. Used flex seal on audio gear w/good results. There is a green flex seal spray. Next project restoration, & color match spray paint. Curing time essential for the flex seal for best results, dont hurry, it works

I use airtight sacks like sealLine's for inside my pack for another reason too. Even fully loaded, the pack will float because of them. Why not spray the top too, and then the top pouch would be waterproof?

I have an ALICE pack was well, everything is in good condition except the lid. Going to see if I get the same results with Gorilla seal.

I am thinking about applying 2 component poly urethane paint to the inside of my alicepack. That should make the entire bag waterproof. Just applying it with a brush, while the bag is inside out.
@silverknight6745 жыл бұрын
Quick question, maybe a dumb one but would you ever consider doing the whole pack in the Flexseal?
@ldsphotodude49 Жыл бұрын
I tried this and for some reason did not receive the same results the spray just cracked and flaked off. I tried it twice. The first time I painted it OD green and decided maybe the paint made the flexseal brittle so after I got it all off again I spayed it again with just flexseal, but that cracked and flaked off too. I think I'll look for the rubberized piece you can put on afterwards

Just did my first coat on my Medium Alice pack. Only change was I taped off the nylon seams. First coat is a little rough but I can only see a little light through so it’s not bad. Next coat soon then the OD paint

I originally used a truck bed liner that was a rubberized spray like Flex Seal before Flex Seal even came out and I used it on my backpacks and patched my canoe with it

Great way to keep the ALICE pack going man, nice. I love the mannequin dressed as the Vietnam Marine, with the aviator shades he must be at Danang Airfield. Hey Brent, I saw Apocalypse Now "Final Cut" last weekend in IMAX theatre and yes it was f'ing awesome man!

This is kind of unrelated, but I have 2 ponchos and some Canadian .308 mag pouches that get a nasty putrid smell if they aren't left to constantly air out. I have tried washing, soaking and leaving them out in the sun, but the smell returns if the items are put into storage and it appears that the odor is coming from the waterproofing. Is there a solution to this problem?

I’m a photographer I have very expensive backpacks but as with most packs taking off the pack and laying it down tends to wear the fabric on the bottom or if you have it set down and it’s raining and the ground is wet it tends to soak through this may be a preemptive strike to prep my gear for longer lasting waterproofing thanks for the idea

Doesn't work. Within a year my lid look the same as it did before I did it. All cracked and peeling.

Hi Brent, Great Idea, Sorry my did not work, after about a week or so its started to flake off and made a sizable mess. It could have been due to the pack having been waterproofed at some stage so the the Flex seal did not stick but just wanted to let you know it did not work for me.

Alice pack liners had the rubberized coating on the inside of the bag and the nylon on the outside. The ones with the rubberized coating on the outside are the cheap Chinese knockoffs. The reason the nylon was on the outside was to protect the rubberized coating from abrasions.

What a great idea. I would like to know if there's anything I can do for the rest of the pack to bring back to life? My pack was on storage for a long time and it has gotten hard and stiff. I got many years of good service from it and would love to continue using it. Please help if you can.

Nice tip. But I keep my shit in a waterproof bag. Never had any faith in the lid. I just use it to store ration rubbish as it's only really meant to hold a pack.

so after 6 months my flex seal failed. peeled big time. i found its best to paint it on fabric with a brush. you can also use latex paint

Hi so I have a repro Alice pack that doesn’t have that waterproof lining and I’m wondering if I can spray the flex seal directly onto the underside of the fabric? Is this safe? (It’s fine if u don’t know)
@Brent03316 күн бұрын
Only one way find out. It'll it take hold or it'll perl off in a short period of time.

It would probably be worth it to turn the pack inside out and line the inside of the pack and treat the outside with neverwet to prevent water from saturating the fabric.
