I certainly have a lot of positive things to say about this video. Instead of being long winded, i'll keep this brief. I was in the Army when the great transitions happened (1993 -2006) and I can fully agree that repurposing gear for this particular application is far too often overlooked. When the MOLLE craze hit the military, the medical pouches saw a lot of changes within a few short years. I found early on that the M249 SAW pouches served as superior IFAK pouches than the original medical pouches. That little extra height in the M249 ammunition pouch allows for your longer lifesaving instruments such as decompression needles and tourniquets fit perfectly, as opposed to the inadequate medical pouch. I still use them to this day as my primary IFAK. Secondly, the MOLLE Canteen carrier also makes for a very nice IFAK as it also provides the height needed for instruments. I used the rig in my thumbnail as a system. In the canteen pouches, I carried 500ml IV bags, in the M60 pouch I carried a CLS bag minus the 1k ml. I didn't realize it until years later, but it really would've been a good rig for medics. It has these padding inserts for flotation. Well if you remove the inserts you can easily fit a TQ and IFAK and there's five cells of padding. Just an 11B, but I helped doc any way I could.

That was one of the first things I learned when I arrived at my very first assignment to Korea in 1976. Have a complete set of web gear, although I managed to grab a U.S. Army BAR belt and used it until around 1985. Came back in 1982 (same unit, platoon and fecking bunk. For some odd reason we seemed to have a serious shortage of 30 round mags. At most the regular 19Ds at the most had zero 30s, but a metric sh!? ton of 20s. We also had a shortage of the new TA50 ammo pouches and were running the old M56 Canvas magazine pouches. I managed to black market a bottle of Johnny Walker for some new TA50, and a dozen 30 round magazines. Ended up keeping three and trading the others off to some of my platoon. I always started the patrol with a 30 in the mag well and stash the other two inside my flak vest for emergencies. The 19E (Tankers) had the new TA50 nylon magazine pouches, but were never issued M16s, they 1911s and two Grease guns per tank. All we could do was fall back on Army problems have three choices. The right way, the wrong way and the Army way. Basically keep your head down, don’t make trouble and suck it up and drive on. Still have three sets of the new LBE as well as two sets of BAR belts with the M56 gear mixed in.

Grew up on Alice gear in the 80's. Issued gear came with hard buckles and clips to attach the pouches and consistently wore blisters on my back and hips. Tried to tape them with hundred-mile hour tape but it wouldn't last and still produced blisters. So I run down to the Army surplus and bought my own gear, cut off the hard buckles and used 550 to tie each pouch or butt pack and canteens to the web belt. Worked like a charm and blisters went away. I have used some of the updated stuff but I have reverted back to my original LBE. And yes it works fine over plate carriers.

I used to go hiking in high summer in Western NY. It's non-stop heat, humidity and mosquitoes. The ALICE rig I had was much better than a backpack because it was easier to carry the weight around my waist and I could radiate heat off my back which was a huge help. I have to laugh seeing all these people reinventing the ALICE with their "battle belts" (NOW WITH SUSPENDERS!).

I was in the Army ( infantry ) the early 90s and we loved our LBEs . I remember when they started to issue the "assault vest" and no one liked them. We were used to having everything on our waist/ hips and that was great for low crawling, firing from the prone etc. The vest had the mags right on your chest and were just uncomfortable when you were crawling through the brush and hot as hell on road marches.

Proof of just how sophisticated, versatile, and ahead of its time the old-school is. This is understanding on why M1956 was so favored by the troops relative to everything that came before, the liabilities of its canvas construction solved by switching to nylon and never looking back. Plus any of these basic belt-and-suspenders rigs are good-to-go for all temperature ranges, open and ventilated so much better than any of the full vest ensembles but also body armor compatible with a couple quick adjustments.

The ALICE did have one serious drawback. Those damned ALICE clips. I left mine on because I was always futzing around with my load out and could never settle down on anything. Still MALICE clips look a hell of a lot better than the zip ties I would use use on occasion.

@@SoloRenegade True. But with that durability comes weight, and weight is a serious issue for infantry especially looking back at Vietnam or even Iraq. Troops were constantly overloaded by command and when that happened, the heavier materials made their situation worse.

@@hellcatdave1 As a combat vet of two wars, I want the more durable uniforms every time. Some weight is worth it, and it wasn't much more either. For example, if I were issued 2 different radios to take on patrol and decide which to take. I'd take the 5lb radio that worked and had battery life over the 3lb piece of crap that might break when i hit the dirt and had crappy batteries and crappy range/reception. First, I need gear I can count on, then I need it to be light. But gear that works and is reliable comes before weight. And the lightweight uniforms we were given were utter garbage. Might as well have fought naked for how good that shit was.

Great idea. I love ALICE gear. I have tried it all, LBV and chest rigs with battle belts. I keep going back to my LBE. my gear looks like an old Blackhawk catalog. But it's cool and works well with a ruck sack.

You can't beat the classics. I'll have to try to find an old H-harness now.....that's Vietnam as hell lol.....by the time I started BT in '83, they'd gone to the Y-harness for LBE. They made you put the "first aid kit" on the suspenders, and they always got in the way of the ALICE pack straps. Well done, Mr. D'Amico. You definitely put a lot of thought into this set up.

Love the LBE vids! Got my first ALICE rig at 19. Couldn't wait to get something more modern and high speed cool guy looking. Used both types LBV88, FLC, every chest rig and armor set up ever made. Years later I've gone back to the ALICE set up. Using modern belts, suspenders and pouches but one advantage of the older ones is they held zero water and dried in minutes after fording a river. Chest rigs are great for riding in a vehicle and armor for direct action but nothing beats an LBE for walking in the woods, wet hot, cold weather or being unsupported. Said it for years if we get involved in a long ground war, arctic or jungle instead of police actions all the $500 chest rigs will be tossed away for $50 1970s LC2 ALICE belt and suspenders.

I have pretty much reverted back to a belt kit. And it is a hodgepodge conglomeration of very old school items, nylon Alice items, in a few modern style pouches. But I do like the 30 round Alice magazine pouches for this reason, when I run my m4 of course I have 30 round 5.56 mags, when I run my 9mm AR pistol, I've been using the Magpul 27 round magazines (I load them out to 25 rounds) and the height of them are the same as the 30 round magazines and they fit perfectly in the mag pouch I don't have to redo an entire kit or have a second kit. I put three magazines in each pouch but actually it would hold four in each. Very rare Lee but if doing static perimeter patrol and I wanted to carry a shotgun, yeah I could throw 15 to 20 shotgun rounds in each of the magazine pouches. I started getting away from chess rigs, when an actual application I found myself with too much crap on the front laying in the prom I could not get fully proned and also laying in the prone I could not get to gear that was in the front. And also wearing it high was too constricting. The only time I wear a chest rig and actually in conjunction with my belt rig was sporting an AK since the mags wouldn't fit in the AR pouches and then I put a cheap old style tricom chest rig. And then I would use the AR pouches for incidentals, smoke, lickies and chewies

@@HankMcGurk when I joined the Army, we were still in BDUs, ALICE gear, Cold War training.... and then went through the transition of Iraq and Afghanistan. Uniform changes, body armor, camo changes, vest changes, etc. Some stuff got better, other stuff got worse. But with Iraq and Afghanistan in the rear view, and Ukraine and China in teh present, the thinking is going back towards LBE/LBV style setups, only using the body armor for specific missions and situations. Militaries ran the LBE style setup for decades prior, for multiple reasons that many of us are relearning. I didn't get any combat time with the ALICE gear, but I had plenty with body armor and other items. And the more i learn about different setups, the more I find the logic behind the ALICE style gear was valid, or what the British do. I didn't understand the philosophy behind ALICE gear when I was initially serving and using it. Now that I do understand how to utilize it properly, I wish I'd known then what I know now.

The Iraqi insurgents and Afghans, to my understanding, used direct fire weapons and IEDs, with an occasional RPG-7, but I could be wrong. I run a Russian SSO Smersh harness and it’s the Russian equivalent. I can carry 8 mags. Two canteens or one and a dump pouch. Med pouch. 7 liter butt pack. But I’m definitely eyeing and Alice kit, gotta have one as an American

I'm an AKM guy myself and use a lot of Russian/Com-Bloc gear. I like my chest rigs and tac vests ( the Spetsnaz ones ) but, if I were to use a belt and harness system, it would be the SMERSH. With U.S. gear carrying systems, I like my RACK vests

I have my full 782 (deuce) gear from the 1980's along with a Mountain XL ALICE Pack, 2 plastic canteens and aluminum canteen cup. However, I have a Molle vest with chest mags, Kevlar and Plates. That gear is legendary! I was from the USMC steel pot & flack jacket days. Old Corps. Semper Fi gentlemen!

Hi there and thank you for your take on the Alice webbing system. As a former grunt myself, I just want to comment on the location of your knife on the right hand side of your rig set up. There is a huge reason why us Australian grunts, carry our knives and/or bayonets, next to our bumbag. If you’ve ever gone to ground and did fire and movement with the rig on. I can tell you now that, the location of the knife and your right rib will meet and your rib will either be broken or bruised if it ever came in to contact wit that knife handle. I’ve seen it happen, and it’s not pretty, especially matching in the jungles of far North Queensland and charging through the difficult terrain. That knife will most certainly get caught up in vines and god knows what. So, please take my advice and relocate it, before you run in to some very serious injuries. Cheers, OzzyGrunt.

@@VariableKnife A good work around from a recon grunt...take some 1"-1.5" webbing,about as thick as you can sow by hand (seat belt material will work but is really supple under strain like: surf, weight of knife, veg, etc). You need a peice about 20" + long. Make two loops for belt, one on each end for the width of you trouser belt. About 2" loops. Sow with heavy needle and dentle floss. (sail needle and pliers will allow thicker webbing). Then 4" down from the end of one loop, fold the webbing so it is 90 degrees from the loop. The actual fold will be a 45 degree edge, but webbing will be 90 degrees. ( I allowed 1" for the fold. if you use seat bealt material, allow 2-ish" for the fold [the width of the webbing should be the legnth of the fold] that means the total start length would then be about 22" +). After folding, secure it with stitches. Then 2" from the first fold, make a second 90 degree fold back up towards the start ing loop so the whole thing is a squared off u-shape. Secure the second 90 fold with stitches. now you should have a lowering harness that will hold a 2" wide sheath about 4" down below your belt. This allows the wearing of the knife with your belt kit and still have access to it. If you ever had to ditch your LBE/782 gear, you'll always have your knife on you. We viewed our knives as first line gear. Always on our bodies. You may need a leg strap to keep the knife from dangling but another tip was to use line like (90 lbs cotton webbing, shoe string, or para-cord [gutted]). Feed the line through the sheath, make one end a loop with a rubber band on it or a thinner ranger band (bicycle inner tube loop). i would then use this to go around my leg, through the rubber/ranger band and tie a basic or slip knot. Now this secures the knife sheath from flopping around but if you fell or get hung up on something while climbing etc. the band would break and not the line. Nor would you get hurt or irreparably hung up. We also would use it for our sheathed multi-tools in just an admin setting the same way. One last tip or point of order...a kydex sheath when lowered will make a lot of noise when struck by brush during movement. You can soften the noise with tape or if you are still reading this and industrious enough, shoe-goo or glue some leather, cloth, felt, or fleece on the outside of the sheath. Camo of course ;) This gave us a system to carry our knives/multi-tools also on our UDT vests during maritime ops under an arm with one of the straps, able to be reached by both hands irreguardless of handedness (right or left). Should give you and option to carry, conveniently and without being injured. P.S. Also on the cheap...I was in during the Clinton draw down of the military. We didn't have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of!! Good luck and Semper Fi!!

The British army have always retained web gear and it has evolved into what is now commonly called "Airborne Webbing". Dragon supplies in England is a lead supplier and has various different models. Definitely worth taking a look at the concept.

So he is my two cents tip for running A.L.I.C.E. gear that I used back in the day when I was in Recon Plt. as a scout, in Air Cav unit...Problem with A.L.I.C.E. gear is the metal sliding clips that are used to attach them to belt ...they can rub against you and cause hot spots...pulled mine out and replaced then all with cable ties. double em up (2 ties to each slot) which held everything super secured and no more hot spots...also shoe goo'd my leatherman multi tool case to outside of my Kabar knife sheath and keep two pieces of 'ranger bands' (bicycle tube) around as extra secured and useful if needed for something else. also replaced boot laces with 550 cord ( use 7 strands inside) in case needed cordage to possibly attach Kabar to a pole (spear) for S.E.R.E reasons ( still having multi tool use as a knife). worked out well for me...just saying

Definitely an ingenious modification that works well, very nice! I've got a lot of different kit and loadouts, but for Light Infantry/ Dismounted/ Small Unit stuff not running Armor (or real light on Armor) I've definitely moved back to good chest Rigs and the SADF Type 83- style Harness/ Battle Jacket LBE type loadout (with a Slick Vest under it as necessary). They just work. Good stuff!

I travel light with my ALICE rig. I use a SAW pouch as my butt pack. I use a old M-14 ammo pouch for my IFACK. Good Job!!!

I've been setting up some Alice pistol belts w/ H harness and modern molle mag pouches (both pistol and rifle), buttpack, universal Bianchi pistol holster, okc 3S, titanium canteen w/ SS Pathfinder cup (badass cup). OD is my favorite color lol! Experimenting with get home stuff.

You know how many weird looks I got from my camping, bushcraft, hunting and Bigfoot buddies when they first saw me and my alice rig? At first they looked at me like I was insane but over time they either tried hunting grade suspender belt systems and they inevitably fall apart and fail but meanwhile I've been using mine and evolving it with maxpedition pouches for almost 15 years now. Most of them noticed this and have started using the old aloce system too since it's just a very versatile system that is durable and inexpensive.

That's a great cost effective set up! 1) Are the various pouches attached to the pistol belt with ALICE clips or Malice clips or what?? 2) What kind of buttpack is that/where did you get it This is what's really cool to me, profiling guys gear and what setups they've found that works for them out in the field, how they've learned to mod the gear and make it better, etc... All the Alice pouches are fastened to the belt with Malice clips, it’s a Velocity/Mayflower Jungle butt pack.

@@VariableKnife I have actually gone a little further with my ALICE gear and I once in a while I'll use a M1945 suspender with associated M1945 field pack for added carrying capacity. The suspenders work perfectly with the ALICE hookups on the buttpack and mag pouches.

I have two like belt set ups one with canvas M14 mag pouches for 7,62 and one with the 30 round M16 pouches with GI harness . The IFAK in the M16 pouch was a great idea .I got the canvas gear after Viet Nam got out of Army in 1970!!!! yes I'm a old guy !! But can still pack it in the field... Thank you Lord,,,,,,

Interesting idea to use an ammo pouch for a IFAK. Plus, the two grenade pouches for some CAT tourniquets. My ALICE pistol belt has stuff from the mid 1950's to the mid 1990's. Started my ALICE kit in 1977, (Army Infantry). The buttpack, 1911 mag pouches and H-suspenders are cotton duck Vietnam era stuff. No "Y" suspenders. Have plenty of nylon pistol mag pouches that were used for Beretta M-9 mags. Working just great for the Sig-226 mags. Also have an ALICE vest that has the H-suspenders. Love all the new ideas to work with ALICE. If anybody would like to get one of the Benelli nylon pistol holsters that were used for the Berretta M-9. They are available from MidwayUSA. A top flap holster that carries most full frame pistols. Beretta, SIG, H&K, Glock, S&W M&P, Walther and Ruger. There are even Benelli holsters for medium frame revolvers. The S&W-586 fits perfect. All "L" frame and "K" frame sized revolvers will fit. Sorry but those "X" frame .50 calibers are too big. Not to worry cause you can go to combat with a .357 mag or a .38-special and be just fine.

I run a Russian SSO SMERSH rig for my AKs and a heavily modified ALICE rig for my ARs. Both are set up to similar configuration. I have a holster set up on both. The SMERSH carries 8 to 10 rifle mags and 3 G17 mags. The ALICE rig carries 12 mags (21 mags if I gut two pouches plus 3 pistol mags also. Everything balances well with webbing gear and provides more sustainability than just a pc and war belt.

I really appreciate this vid! I hated the "3 mag" pouches when I was in because STANAG mags "clakned" around inside of them. And when they were full, they made it difficult to "go prone." But as an IFAK? Perfect... And just the right price, too! 😏👌

Anyone looking for a modern molle take on the ALICE system check out the mayflower jungle rig. The rig in the video had some pouches and the suspenders from that kit. Pretty awesome system for running more of a sustainment style of gear, you can really load it out and run it with a slick vest for armor.

Maybe it's the best belt rig ever conceived, but I can't imagine the person who would pay that when you can source an equivalent with a mix of surplus and new components for a small fraction of that. Using the very low profile Brit PLCE suspenders if you want to wear it under a plate carrier, for example.

Funny enough, I started with MOLLE and over time, ended up with whats essentially an expensive and bulky ALICE belt. Now just an ALICE with choice MOLLE updates like the MOLLE canteen pouch. That pouch rocks

Great logical and realistic gear for the minute man or prepper. I see these video with those ninjas 🥷🏽 high speed navy seals and they’re always talking about light minimalist gear. What a bunch of horse manure. We are civilians preparing for the unseen catastrophic scenario. We don’t have logistics or resupply. We have to carry ALL the necessary gear for survival and prolonged situations. We have to be forward thinking and self reliant.

Don’t hate me for saying this…but the US is way behind in belt kit / LBE. Best belt kit on the market which I used is from Britain - JayJays Gen 4 webbing. Crossfire, an Aussie company, has come out with the DZ Rig. Marauder UK offer various versions too.

Yes ALICE/M1956-67-type belt/harness is what im trying to put together. Got the Rothco H-suspenders/belt right now, would really like to find a buttpack with grommets to hook into so it doesn't lean off belt. I don't know how long the Rothco stuff will last tho... Now if I could find a STABO rig I would build off that and never look back.

From what I can tell, that buttpack and suspenders are from Velocity Systems' Jungle belt setup. The whole jungle belt is ridiculously expensive, but the butt pack is about $65, or just get a surplus buttpack (hard to find in OD).

@@thefucrew9865 happy to help. also, if you want more ammo and keep the ALICE LBE as mostly sustainment, you can wear a Chicom Type 56 chest rig under the ALICE H-Harness. You can stuff two mags per pocket with the Chicom and to get the mags to sit higher you can put in batteries and snacks at the bottom and socks in the middle to stabilize all the items.
