Great job here. I really enjoy that you showed how the exterior and interior floor plan need to be married. I think folks need to understand that you can design an interior that allows for a more balanced exterior and still get what you need.

Difficult challenge to do a Tudor without timbering. Makes you wonder what the owners actually want. Great job so far!

I have a 1930 brick Tudor revival without timbering. It may not be what most people think of when they think Tudor, but it can be done and look authentic.

We live in an actual 1925 Tudor revival. It has the cat's back over the front porch. An eclectic mix of windows--large 6-light casements on the street-facing sides (it's on a corner). 6-over-6 double hung on the back side of the formal rooms, 6 over 1 overlooking the side garden. It's a 2-story house, bedroom windows same as downstairs except the rear windows are double hung single-light. Stucco, no timber. Shutters. Beautiful house, somehow not screwed up by anybody in the last 100 years.

So glad to see this: I was afraid you'd be on vacation for WEEKS and I'd be in bad withdrawals! Welcome back! Boy o boy if they don't go for the smaller garage... You'll either have to massive up that dormer again... or maybe give the garage a real Tudor barn look? And the back is gonna be a really hard one. I totally look forward to seeing your finished design after haggling it out with them. These Wednesday design videos just really get me thinking. Thanks again!

I was really interested in this video. I have taken a floorplan that I liked that has a modern farmhouse exterior and I have been modifying it to have a Tudor revival look. This is a single level house, but I started by pitching the roof and adding small windows and a dormer to create the appearance of a second story and give it the prominance that most Tudor homes have. I also included a heavy dose of half timber beams in the exterior design. I also love the cat-back roof that you included, but I'm not sure how this could be included in the current design. Anyway, it is fun to dream.

Love the re-do! The original catslide gave too much emphasis to the garage and looked 'forced'. The improved left side higher ridge and steeper pitch make an amazing difference! Leaded glass windows lose their magic if they are too numerous. I am now inspired to do a small gable end on my Tudor style house in the Wane siding rather than the previously planned stucco look. Another great presentation!

Lol the owners want a Tudor without timbering or leaded glass windows- it’s like ordering a BLT and asking them to hold the bacon and lettuce!

Another brilliant save. I must wonder what training today's architects receive...certainly not classical methodology.
@RonRobertson-lafrance3 ай бұрын
In fact, I think they're taught that classical methodology is of no value at all. Novelty and gimmicks are what they go for.

So obvious and clear when listening and watching, that its hard to understand why it was done the way it was in the first place. Has much more of a cottage feel with the smaller garage.

Nice catslide! It looks more like the authentic 20s and 30s revivals I lived near now, less like McMansion McTudor. It's hard to grasp the way scale tells your mind what is important - most people react to it without knowing why.

Roofing material and gutters will also make a big difference here. Slate (or a synthetic slate) and half round copper gutters with collection boxes. I don't believe there is precedent for a raised seem roof in the Tudor Revival style.

Be careful making the garage smaller. You need 25' to fit a full size truck. I just worked up a bid to extend one bay of a garage 4' so he can get his F-350 4 door in the garage. It's going to look ugly as heck? Nice job on this one Brent!!

I understand that, historically, a window made of many smaller panes of glass was less expensive than one with a single, larger pane. Is that still true, or is it reversed now?
@BrentHull2 ай бұрын
Great question. It is reversed now. It is much cheaper to buy a cheap big pane rather than have it divided into many small panes. Thx.
