This excellent live performance is from the AYO's 'Live On Tour' CD (1995).
The CD notes say: "This disc opens with the exciting first moments for the Australian Youth Orchestra's Concertgebouw date on 8 July 1994.
The work they chose to launch the performance was the virtuosic Festive Overture by the Australian composer, Brenton Broadstock (born Melbourne, 1952). Composed in 1981, it was Broadstock's first large-scale orchestral work, written shortly after his return from study in the USA. It won first prize in a competition for composers at the 1981 Townsville Pacific Festival, and was first performed and recorded by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra respectively. Since then Broadstock has written extensively for orchestra, including three symphonies and concertos. Camerata Australia also commissioned and performed his work In A Brilliant Blaze.
The Festive Overture is a celebratory and joyous work full of energy and driving rhythms.
"The Festive Overture....gave the musicians the opportunity to release their energy right from the start. A sympathetic, rhythmic, powerfully executed occasional piece." Roel van der Leeuw, reviewing the concert in Amsterdam's Trouw."
'Festive Overture' was also performed at the BBC Proms July 23, 1994. Stephen Johnson gave the AYO a stunning review in The Independent - www.newspapers...
