HCB: "I was very lucky that I had always on the pocket...." CR: "Money?" HCB "No, films." Neatly captures each man's driving force.

Great interview. HCB was getting into it eventually. Charlie Rose knows how to push people. All of you complaining about his tact would get about 2 minutes into an interview with Henri for fear of making him feel 'uncomfortable'.

Very pretentious twats in the comments. Just like most self proclaimed creatives or art enthusiasts. He seemed like he was beginning to enjoy the exchange after twenty minutes.

Charlie is obtuse here, but he's an American Christian and not too schooled up in European 19th and 20th century culture, let alone the sensibilities and subtler values - or ethos - of that culture. Despite the circles he moves in, he's not well experienced with people outside his coastal set. He would have been intimidated too. He was sufficiently charming that Mr Cartier-Bresson felt it was worth pursuing the conversation and offering the many niceties and insights he eventually delivers.

If you want to get a feel for the style of Bresson's shooting, and some of the things he's talking about - I highly recommend buying an film Leica with a 50mm and go out shooting. Take it travelling and document the street. It is truly a marvelous way of documenting humanity.

I wish they had sent Avedon to interview him. Now that would have made it really interesting. Avedon was a thinker, articulate, eloquent and obviously artistic, just like Cartier-Bresson. Loved to have heard the two of them converse.

There are no photographs I find more emotionally genuine or compelling than those of HCB. His vision transcends what most people are capable of seeing, much less what they are able to convey in their art.

Charlie Rose handles this interview masterfully. Bresson starts as dismissive and short, Rose dosen't let him play that game but does so respectfully. There would be nothing to watch or learn here if Bresson had his way. It's concerning that few people understand that and attack Rose.....???

An artist, of course, cannot encapsulate or articulate the meaning of his life and art. It either stands on its own, ... or it falls or fails due to lack of depth and soul behind it. this interview is what you might well call, "painfully endured."

Charlie Rose clearly doesn't understand that in anarchism nobody is above the other, everybody is equal and therefore someone being as popular and praised as Henri Cartier-Bresson is isn't a good thing for an anarchist, it is almost an embarrassment to be prolific. Anarchy isn't just about fighting or rebellion. You can tell HCB was getting annoyed with him

Rose's surprise at HCB defining himself as an Anarchist is laughable. Bresson comes from a time and place when Anarchism was not linked with violence and mayhem. Henri is such a beautiful man. A huge inspiration.

Charlie Rose needs to respect the people he interviews more..for example, "The life you have lived"..The sentence should be - The life you are currently living..Just because he has aged, doesn't mean he has stopped living".✌️

I'm not sure I would have agreed that HCB was an anarchist, as he described himself to be. He came across as far too anhedonic for that; or maybe he was just intimidated, or overwhelmed by the interviewer. Love his work though, even he didn't find much in it himself!

Agreed. Charlie's style works for some subjects, but Henry is an extraordinarily sensitive man immersed within his emotion. Charlie's approach is too neanderthal (read: blunt) to begin to arouse the depths of Henry's spirit. Metaphorically, so many "pitches" were delivered to someone who doesn't do Charlie's kind of baseball. A bit like a bull in a china shop Henry has dealt with war and prison, so he is able to easily deal with Charlie's approach, but we are at a loss ... a missed opportunity by having a limited exchange. A bit of a waste.

Almost unbearable. Rose talks as if to a deaf person, to a three-year old, or to a mumbling senile idiot, all at the same time. HCB apparently granted this interview only reluctantly, and had his worst apprehensions materialized. When one has to say "Excuse me" to get his interviewer's attention, you know it's becoming a failure. Only Cartier-Bresson's love for the subject saved this from being a complete waste of time, and when his face lights up and he says 'Puff!', you forgive everything.

Never tough Cartier-Breason was such and arrogant person. But little by little the lid comes off. He was rude towards Ansel Adams because Ansel didn’t want to go and shot and social photos in time as of WWII, Ansel became a pinnacle of photography in his Medium. HCB used to be my favorite photographer but not anymore. What an arrogant person seems to be. BTW: The interviewer can look naive in his questions but that’s his job, to expose the questioning with simple questions even a non expert can understand. Not everyone understands the motivation of street photography, if he doesn’t ask, how the hell is it going to be expressed to a new generation or a child that doesn’t know anything about photography. Small people with big egos are the ones that react the way Cartier -Bresson In this interview. A petulant man
