Die hard Yankees fan here, I saw this game on TV never forget it....I was actually scared when I saw G. Brett's reaction, but as much of a Yankee-killer he was , he became my favorite player because of the way he reacted here and also even the way he went at Nettles in '77 ALCS,..... he was a hard nosed gamer & wanted to win, plus he was a great ,clutch player.

Probably the greatest non-playoff moment in MLB history. You have no idea how this absolutely took over the nation's imagination at the time. There was nothing anyone talked about for a solid week other than this game. Pro wrestling would utterly kill for this kind of a storyline, and it happened authentically and in the moment.

I remember watching the infamous incident on TV and thinking, "I'm glad I'm nowhere near Yankee Stadium right now" when I saw George Brett charging out of the dugout....though I was and am a Yankees fan, I'd thought, "Maybe he has a valid argument: how can pine tar affect whether or not a player hits a home run? Isn't it the athlete's power(behind home plate)that makes him hit home runs?" I seem to remember that before the questionable homerun, George hit a rather far foul ball and I thought, "He's thinking homerun." I also have memories of Tim McClellan being the umpire as the bearer of bad news to the players in the form of ejecting from games--as George mentioned, Tim was 6'5'; I guess that was rather convenient in a way!

Yeah, when you watch the video, he's running out there hopping mad and getting in the ump's face, but his arms are waving around, it's not looking like he's going to hit anyone. Then Lee MacPhail intervened, an eventually overruled McClellans’s decision and ordered the game to be resumed from the point after Brett had homered. On Aug. 18, the teams reconvened at Yankee Stadium, and about 1,200 fans watched as Martin symbolically protested by putting pitcher Ron Guidry in center field and moving left-handed first baseman Don Mattingly to second base. Martin then protested the game - before the first pitch to the Royals' Hal McRae - on the grounds that Brett did not touch all the bases during his home run and that the current umpiring crew could not verify this. But umpire Davey Phillips produced an affidavit signed by the July 24 umpires stating that Brett had indeed touched all bases. An irate Martin was quickly ejected from the game for arguing. Yankees reliever George Frazier struck out McRae to end the top of the ninth, and Royals reliever Dan Quisenberry pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to preserve Kansas City's 5-4 win.

Kind of funny to think that pine tar use was limited back in the olden days because they didn't want that stuff to get on baseballs, and now every pitcher uses pine tar or other sticky substances.

Billy Martin was right. Brett was wrong and he should fess it up. Billy knew the rules better than anyone and he got George wrong. And Brett admits that Mayberry was thrown out for the same thing so I don't want to hear anything about it.

Here is the thing with that team durring that time they were playing ball to have fun, small ball, George taught this to the royals not to many years ago and we made it back to the world series a second run. When teams compeat with money its not fair to smaller clubs but smaller clubs can win with a different strategy. Ever see the movie money ball This is why you have teams like the Yankees with how many world series titles? They were bought. Money paid for them. One teams buys all the best players everyone else's scrambles for scraps.

so if he is so innocent, why did the team have to steal the bat after he got ejected and run to the locker rooms as fast as they could? no reason to do that if he is so innocent.
