Brett, I wrote you about Dak's innacuracy/read issues not long ago--I should have known you were already all over it. More importantly... After years of being routinely disrespected, people are beginning to realize how good Romo was. From 08 through 2013, Romo was DREAMING of a roster as good as the Cowboys have now (especially on defense). He kept them competitive through a whole era of horrendous coaching, play-calling and team-building, doing it with mediocre to poor o-lines, a struggling running game, and mainly bottom tier defense. He made Miles Austin and Terrence Williams dangerous, let alone Dez & Witten. I'm not even a Cowboys fan, but Romo was all class and damn them for the way they treated their best player. They're getting what they deserve.

The only problem I see with your point is that we could never have a roster this talented when you were paying Romo 20+ million a season. Romo is good, no doubt, but I don't think he was ever worth the entire salary we paid him. We saw it over and over again that he wasn't quite good enough to take his team deep in the playoffs.

Daniel Key stop, Romo and his salary were in dallas in 2016. There's no reason Jerry couldn't have built up the oline during romo's years playing.
@sunandablanc6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Key I dunno, man. You’re a Dallas fan, I’m not, so frankly I feel more objective. All I’m saying is, I know a top shelf QB when I see one, and that guy was clearly top shelf. Blaming him for the Cowboys troubles is crazy. As Brett says here, Romo was hiding their deficiencies, not causing them. The money? After his big contract in 2013, Romo was still paid less than Big Ben, Brees, and Aaron Rodgers-which is normal-but ALSO less than Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, and Kapernick. Romo’s salary was not the problem. Romo was not the problem. But Cowboys fans blamed him for everything. Shit, to an outsider it seemed like they blamed him every time it rained. What I saw was one of the NFLs smartest QBs, with phenomenal pocket awareness, a lightning quick release, and unshakeable calm. I saw a QB making a bad team look better than they actually were. A truck, not a trailer, in scout lingo. What I saw was an elite-level QB. Did he have some flaws? Yeah. But c’mon, man, get real. The only guys from Romo’s era who he can be compared to are all going to the HOF. He probably won’t, but if he gets in one day I won’t argue.

Ugh... That reminds me of someone whom I was severely unfortunate to not only have met, but to have had to deal with on a regular basis that was a die hard Romo hater. For that, you must now share in my pain. I remember a number of years ago when Romo's Cowboys went head to head against Peyton Manning's Broncos and both of them just burned down the house. I think the final score was like 51-48 with the Broncos winning, but Romo was a fucking beast in that game. But of course, this dumb ass couldn't even give him that. It was clear as day that the Cowboys lost because 1) Peyton Manning was still playing awesome like he used to do and 2) the Cowboy's Defense just couldn't stop them to save their lives. The Cowboys Defense hasn't been very good in a very long time, but they were at their worst around this time. I have no idea what the stats were for that game, but IIRC, Romo was at least in the ballpark of Manning and the score showed it. But, no... Dumbass bitched about it the next day saying Romo shouldve done better and that Mr. High school QB (that was also in his 50s and miserably out of shape) could play better. If anything, that prick and this game made me like Romo more and more. I just wish the Cowboys could've had a better O-Line quicker to keep Romo from getting so many injuries and a better Defense so that Romo wasn't carrying the team and they would have options. I honestly feel bad for the guy.... He's probably the best QB we've had since Troy Aikman and if Romo could've made a couple less mistakes at key points or had that better team, we could've at least made a deep run into the playoffs.

Imagine if after dak going 13-3 in 2016, if romo could've had the playoff run foles did and won a 6th ring for the cowboys but they just kicked him out the door instead.

I still can't stop thinking of the Cowboys as the old Cowboys, where you had Tony Romo's connection with Witten and Bryant, and Murray running all over the field behind the second coming of the Wall of Dallas. Zeke is obviously in the elite group of running backs, but Dak Prescott is obviously not, their receivers and tight ends are lacking right now, and their O-Line is injured and aging.

If the draft capital on defense wouldn't work the, the defense wouldn't be as good as it is right now. If Romo had stayed healthy and was still the Quarterback, this would be a dangerous team.

That's because a multitude of former 2nd round busts are finally coming into form. Doesn't mitigate the fact that they've failed to invest in the offense (outside of Zeke) for a few seasons.

Fred-beard not being there is huge. I disagree about the OL aging, Smith maybe because of his back. But OLmen should last at least 8 to 10+ years. Romo with Zeke would have lit them up. Instead we got Dak who struggled for 3 quarters to do anything. You clearly don't know football like you think you do. Watch more film. I've been saying this exact thing since his rookie season; Dak has too many deficiencies as a QB to be a starter, and he's holding a talented Cowboys roster back. He can't make reads at the line of scrimmage, he's not quick enough at analyzing routes, and he can't throw receivers open. In 2016, he benefitted from the best OL in football, and an RB (who is now) top 5 in the league. Now that there's tape of him and Zeke, the cowboys OL has regressed, and the receiving corps has gone from good to bad, their offense has been stymied. It doesn't help that the Cowboys don't invest in a veteran backup QB to help coach Dak in the subtle nuances of the game. The Eagles did it with Chase Daniel, the Jets are doing it with Josh McCown, and the Colts did it in 2012 with Drew Stanton. The Cowboys in 2016 had Tony Romo and he made a world of difference in Dak's development. Then in 2017 they had rookie Cooper Rush, and now they have Cooper Rush (again) and rookie Mike White. If Dak can't put it together this season, I'd suggest that the Cowboys invest in a new QB in the draft.

It seems to include a lot of really good factors and somehow Prescott is near the top in the league with it. Something is missing in the formula, because I wouldn't want him as my team's QB.
@KingSalemence36 жыл бұрын
Case Keenum had a higher QBR then Aaron Rodgers this week and Keenum threw 3 picks compared to Rodgers throwing 3 TDs no picks and almost 300 yards in 2 quarters. QBR is legit a bullshit stat

@Incog Nito acting like it takes a perfect pass not to overthrow a 6'7" monster is apologist behavior at its finest. You telling me Romo doesn't complete that pass? I think Dak is sawft. He gets rattled by pressure too much and lets loose very errant throws because he doesn't want to get hit.

@@skillswiper But the tape does. Look, I'm a big stats and analytics guy myself. But stats should be a starting point...they should point to which questions to ask, which you then answer with the tape. In this case, those stats should make you ask "wait...if Dak's stats are so solid, why did Dallas still finish 8-8 with some embarrassing losses?" One of the answers from the tape is "because those stats are hiding some ugly elements in Dak's game". You obviously know film analysis is important, because you're here watching this channel. So why argue some really amazing film analysis with "...but stats"?

Ryan Evans He has improved in just about every facet of the the game and position of QB. He is more accurate with his deep ball, taking less sacks, is able to stay in the pocket longer, his footwork has tremendously improved, and is commanding an offense that relies much more on him on the line of scrimmage as well as after the ball is snapped. The notion the Dak has not improved but regressed in a significant way, particularly in a vacuum, since his rookie campaign is ignoring his stats AND film. People who are claiming that are just looking at the win column, which is the dumbest way of evaluating talent.

I feel like there's something wrong with the Cowboys a an organization. Dak was a good qb before Romo left, then he fell apart. This tells me that Dallas has absolutely no qb development whatsoever and Romo was able to succeed, and later teach, in spite of it. Ezekiel Elliott doesn't have the same feel. Everything about him feels more closed off and by the numbers instead of showing the world what he can do. That "feed me" thing he does after big runs changed significantly between his first and second season. There was a lot of energy and vigor in it his rookie year. Now it looks like he's doing it just because somebody told him to. This might have more to do with Goodell's bullshit suspension than the Cowboys though. Sean Lee went from normal to suspicious as hell in a matter of seconds. Dez Bryant sent out a tweet after one of the Cowboys coaches blamed him for offensive issues. In it he cited Lee as a snake who advocated for him to get cut. Dez might be a hot-head and he might be loud, but he wasn't a liar. When Sean Lee was asked about this his response was to look down and avoid all eye contact while denying it which looks extremely suspicious and basically confirms that he's lying his ass off and that Dez is indeed correct. I'm not certain in which way the Cowboys culture is wrong, but I feel like the problem is bigger than the players.

So what if a couple players dont get along...they were on opposite sides of the ball. They didnt have to deal with each other directly on game day. You think that everyone that works together gets along with one another? Do you have a job? You never had a co worker who you didnt like or didnt like you? Also if you heard Sean, he admitted that he and Dez didnt see eye to eye all the time because Sean felt that Dez could be a better leader for the team. I agree with you on certain points like Cowboys cannot develop a qb... But it seems to me that you are also looking to blame everyone but Dak..

Dak isn't making those down field throws because he probably doesn't trust that he can. I really can't fathom an NFL QB seeing someone that wide open and not throwing it. He doesn't trust himself which is why teams can stack 7 or 8 in the box and force him to throw downfield; he can't throw it past the box. Shut down Zeke, shut down the Cowboys. Oh, and he still has the same number of TD throws as Wentz after Wentz tore his ACL. That should say something
@alwaysopen79706 жыл бұрын
That's the only way a QB learns. Romo Got picked but was no worse than Brady, Manning or Brees; his numbers were killer and he would force the ball knowing his receivers would try to get it. Every QB throws into triple coverage and that is how they learn. Sak isn't throwing it and could hit some if he threw rather than trying to play college ball.
@gabrielpeterson20795 жыл бұрын
@Yuck Foutube Beasley isn't wide open, yes he beat the corner that was covering him but he's already near the sidelines and the safety is cheating towards that side. If dak throws that ball since Beasley is like 5'10" the ball is either picked by the safety or Beasley catches it out of bounds. OC was bad and tyrannical. Dak wasn't allowed to change the plays as much as this guy thinks he was. Amari eagled proved that. This year Dak will shine and cowboys win at least 10 games.

Dak has passed under 200 yards the past 7 out of 9 games, so what you should have gotten from this is a competent QB would have picked them apart. At least 2 wide open 60 yard TDs were available this game, Dak underthrew it to wide open Black Jarwin, then completely missed Terrence Williams on another wide open pass when Carolina put him one on one with their rookie CB. Dak is incompetent, any other offense would have exposed this defense.

Dak is mediocre. That's definitely true. His reads are too slow, his accuracy is random, and he refuses to take shots downfield. But honestly, he's not the one holding the Cowboys back. It's Garrett and OC Scott Linehan. Their play calling is terrible, they can't create any routes other than slants, drag, and curls, they refuse to use a regular play action passing play, which would extremely benefit Dak because of how deadly he is when the defense sells out on stopping Zeke because they think he has the ball. You could put Drew Brees in this offense, and he'd probably throw for more yards, TD'S and the offense would score more points per game. But change the coaching, and the team will actually start winning games! Take the Rams for example. Under Jeff Fischer, Goff, Gurley, and the offense as a whole were absolute garbage, and they went like 5-11 or 4-12. They fire him and put Sean McVay in, and the offense explodes with mostly the same skill position players (with upgrades on the O line and a couple new receivers) and they ended up going 11-5. That doesn't mean a coaching change will bring instant success, but I think it's time to fire Garrett. He's the one holding the Cowboys back.
