Brevik, Norway - Seascape and History, 4K

Brevik is a small town on the southeast coast of Norway and is located in Porsgrunn municipality, near the towns of Porsgrunn and Skien. Brevik is considered one of Norway's best-preserved "sail ship towns" and was formerly a significant shipping port for e.g. ice and lumber. There has been activity here for a long time, but especially from the 17th century it grows into a more town-like community with trading rights.
In 1622, Admiral - General Cort Adeler was born in Brevik. He has much of the credit for the development of the Danish-Norwegian fleet. Originally his name was Kurt Sivertsen, but when he married for the second time in 1662 he adopted the more distinguished family name Adeler. Cort Adeler joined the Dutch navy as a 15-year-old. He fought in 1639 under Lieutenant Admiral Maarten Tromp at the Battle of The Downs. Later he entered Venetian military service. In 1663 he received an offer from the Danish-Norwegian union king Frederik III to come to Copenhagen to have important functions in the development of the Danish-Norwegian navy. The king appointed him admiral-general and commander-in-chief of the joint Danish-Norwegian fleet. He also received letters of nobility and a very good payment, which enabled him to buy extensive estates in Denmark and Norway. In 1675 war broke out between Denmark-Norway and Sweden. But before Adelaer could sail out with the fleet, he died on his flagship on November 5, aged 53. (source: Wikipedia)

Det har vært aktivitet her lenge, men særlig fra 1600-tallet vokser det til et mer by lignende samfunn med handelsrettigheter.

Kongen utnevnte ham til generaladmiral og øverstkommanderende for den dansk-norske fellesflåten. Han fikk også adelsbrev og svært god betaling, noe som gjorde han i stand til å kjøpe omfattende godseiendommer i Danmark og Norge.
