Useful review, thanks! I know you said you can’t remove the portafilter during puck prep, but do you think it’s possible and practical to remove the cover between grind and tamp, in order to redistribute the coffee grounds by using a tool to reach through the space left by the vacant cover?

I've owned the BE for a little over 3 months and really enjoy it. Your conclusion on the steamer was spot on. I'm still working on getting the milk consistency perfected to allow for latte art. I've tried other tips but the pressure isn't high enough to support them. Overall I'm super satisfied with the BE Impress as a first time espresso machine purchaser. I can finally say my wife enjoys my home cappuccino over store bought drinks.

Had my original express for nearly a year now and it's a trooper! This version would have saved a lot of headaches while learning, but I think I'll go for a barista pro or something like that in the future for the speed making multiple drinks. I have enjoyed tinkering a bit but that puck prep is enticing.

I just brought out my express from summer storage today, gave it a clean, and pulled my first shot of the fall. This looks like a good choice for anyone shopping new, but Breville is a victim of their own success: only when my express is well and truly dead will I replace it. Anyone reading this on the fence as to whether to get a Breville… do it. The brand, on the whole, is a delight.

I struggle to get great shots with the BBE, likely due to the higher pressures. While the BBE does have a lot of features, the Gaggia Classic with the OPV mod is the better choice, IMO.

With this being the type of machine sold at big box stores or recommended regularly online as "the best espresso machine" by food/bev/lifestyle etc... publications, it will end up being a great buy for many beginners unfamiliar with the hobby. Seems to be a sweet spot between semi and fully auto with a significant price savings over the latter.

I’m new to making espresso, bought this about 2 months ago. I’m not overly snobbish about my espresso, but I know how I like it, and I know which shops in my coffee-loving city make the best espresso. The shots that I get from this machine are as good as any that I’ve bought since, well, probably ever.

I already have a Bambino Plus and have been considering purchasing a separate grinder. This has got me thinking... I could use the Bambino to manage the milk frothing, but I could use the Impress for the grind and brew operation. Overkill perhaps. The Impress is on sale here in Aus. I suspect a dedicated grinder will yield better results, but the automation component makes this super appealing. Great review BTW!

Awesome review as always man! I was really hoping Breville were going to include this new tamping feature on the Barista Pro because as you mentioned it is a much better and more efficient machine. If they upgraded the Pro to have the lever tamping and the pressure gauge I really think they'd be on a winner for the sub 1K machine mainstream (non specialist) market.

I wanted to buy a Lelit Mara X with a Giota grinder after the Breville Barista express, but my girlfriend doesn't want to go through the whole procedure. She works from home a lot and it has to go a bit faster. I definitely didn't want a fully automatic machine. So today we bought the Breville Barista express impress for 622€ (it was on sale in Germany). I think it's a good compromise. The milk steam nozzle of the express is really weak, but you can live with it. We drink maybe three cappucinos a day. Great review. Thanks

Curious who this machine is aimed towards considering its got an auto tamping solution but not the auto milk steaming from the Bambino or touch models. If you truly require help with tamping, then why are you left to your own devices with a fully manual steam wand?

Me! As a beginner home barista with a busy work schedule, the ease of having a machine that can correct grind, dose and tamp at the press of a button, with minimal mess and fuss is... brilliant... and a massive draw card. Steaming milk, I find, is a comparatively simple and hassle free process, so I'm not deterred by it not being automatic. It's just a shame that the steam wand doesn't get the upgrade.

After getting sette 270, my shots were consistent and I was really happy with my setup. 2500 double-shot espressos later, I decided to replace BBE with Gaggia Classic and honestly, I regret it. Bambino plus would be better choice. I don't believe that couple extra grind settings will make a difference in this model. I would still recommend separate grinder/ bambino for espresso hobbyist.
@ThorMaxx

You touch on the heating system on the Impress and the steaming performance( or lack there of) compared to the Pro. The ThermoJet system allows for quick and powerful steaming, but back to back drinks on the Pro also serve it's own challenges. This could open up the limitations on the ThermoJet heating system or possibly pick out a design flaw. Typically two back to back drinks brew fine, however when you demand more back to back drinks, it starts to become obvious that something is not right. Brew times become long and shot quality degrades. You can counteract this by adjusting the grind a bit coarser, but that can throw everything off. Give it is a shot some time and see if your Pro experiences that issue that my Pro does.

Looking at buying a new coffee machine and the choice is perplexing. Your review is excellent and very helpful. I make 6 plus coffees in the first part of the day and like everything BUT the slow steam heating you mention. I'll look at the pro you mention that improves on this. I love good coffee at home and use my machine daily and often. What to buy? I do like the grinder built in and auto tampering as my wife makes the coffees first thing and needs easy. But the slow steam on our present machine is low. You mention 75 seconds that's a lot. I have CFS/ME and standing wrecks me. The PRO you mention might be the better choice. Also I couldn't work out what the difference was between Express and Impress for which I came here. Thanks for clearing that up. The other plus in the grind and tampering option is less mess I'm guessing too. Thanks for the help and great review. About to search for your PRO review. How important is the right tampering. I don't find it hard to tamper evenly and the right pressure to let coffee though am I missing something?

The steamer handle if you could even call it that is my biggest annoyance on the express and looks like they've not improved on that here, a lever would have been a big improvement. No choice of manual tampering (without the mess) what happens if the mechanism breaks. The auto tampering might cut out a minute from my routine with the Express. I do like the little gamification of the tampering dial.

Great review! I have the Barista Express and absolutely love it, best purchase I have made. I like the Impress too but imo this new tamping system looks ugly and out of place. The Barista Express is a beautuful piece of machinery, this just looks off. At least they kept the analog pressure gauge.

Glad that they dimensioned the machine to actually operate at 9 bar. The previous barista express was seemingly engineered to deliver 9 bar with the pressurized basket (why on earth would you use them regularly) and a normal basket was impossible to run at lower than 14 bars. It was a very tough balance point to find between channeling or huge underextraction, unless you were willing to do a dimmer mod on a machine under warranty
@tuxkilla615
@tuxkilla615 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Just moving to 9 bar is a huge upgrade. I fought with my barista express for a year until I did the 9 bar spring mod and it was like unlocking a new level of performance from the machine. For someone who doesn’t steam a lot of drinks, this seems like a great option for those mornings when you just want a nice espresso between meetings without all the fuss.
@dieltotor
@dieltotor Жыл бұрын
@@tuxkilla615 This is switching the over pressure valve spring with a weaker one, right? I went the "dimmer" mod route with an SCR power controller on the pump circuit, that way I have full control on the flow/pressure of the brew and you avoid having too much wasted water in the drip tray
@tuxkilla615
@tuxkilla615 Жыл бұрын
@@dieltotor Correct. Some person on reddit posted a spring from McMaster-Carr which drops the pressure to 9 bar. The only issue with the OPV mod is the drip tray fills up much faster, which I am assuming is something breville addressed in this new machine.

@@tuxkilla615 I'm curious to know if they kept the same pump and just set the OPV to 9 bar with a recirculation of the water in the intake, or if they put a more adapted pump and ditched the pressurized basket optimization nonsense. The other advantage is size for machines with inbuilt grinders. Not everyone has the space for a separate grinder on their bench top nor the other bits you might want from perfect puck preparation. I spent about $75 compared to $800. I have a grinder, corelle glass tea pot, glass coffee funnel, cotton and hemp washable coffee filter, and it pours into a glass canning jar. I measured the time it takes the water to cool from boil after turning off the heating element so I can brew at the precise temperature. ... There's so many of these machines "for parts not working" on ebay. If any one of these systems goes out it's a tarnished machine. If any one of my systems stops working it's a cheap replacement AND the only thing my coffee touches is glass, cotton, and hemp. This machine has plastic internal linings. I'm not crazy about extremely hot water draining through plastic for $800.

its a good toy to get peoples toes wet in the espresso game! Especially ones that do not want to spend the big bucks quite yet. But again its a toy. Been running my Quickmill Vetrano 2B + Baratza Vario for the last 8 years EVERY day and its always a treat to make coffee in the morning. Get any machine that fits your budget and make it work so you can enjoy it for years! And always strive for perfection when making your drink since itll be worthwhile in the end.

If you make primarily lattes, go with the pro. If you don’t plan on steaming all that often and are a beginner to puck prep, go with the Impress

How does the tamping function work if you use manual dose mode? Does it ignore the tamping depth that it should be at, compared to when you use the auto dose?

The portafilter is tapered so you can't put excess pressure on it (unless you overfull it). Plus, tamping pressure is not a big concern (proven).
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ Жыл бұрын
Portafilter tapering is a design element that is supposed to improve evenness of flow, nothing to do with tamping pressure :) Plenty of straight edge baskets out there, and now even crazy ones like the Weber Unifilter will holes all the way to the wall

Hi! Love the video. Super helpful. In your opinion is the espresso from the Impress better than from a superautomatic? Currently have the Delonghi ECAM22110 and the espresso is just OK. Been looking at the Phillips Lattego machines or a newer Delonghi, but worry that they will also produce mediocre espresso, when compared to espresso from a really good coffee shop. I'm not interested in going full manual. Thanks!

Might be the case for sure! I think many people go that route of starting with a Breville, learning, and then moving on to something more manual after a few years. Not the worse progression at all :)

one of those dosing cups from crema would solve the issue with re distributing before tamping. but the issue is will it fit? the clearance under the tamper is very tight compared to the old express.

Don't let its features and looks impress you. This is an appliance, not a commercial grade based home product. It'll last you a year, maybe 2. Spend that money on a Gaggia or a Rancilio which may not look as good or have as many features, but they'll last decades.

I’ve had literally every Breville machine, and they’re all still running without issue. I’ve loaned them out to friends and family. I’m not sure where this “unreliable” thing about Brevilles comes from, but the longest running in my possession are well over 5 years of solid service and counting. Take care of your things, and they’ll take care of you.

As mentioned in the espresso portion of the review, I was surprised at how little channeling / inconsistency there was given the minimal puck prep. I think it's perfectly fine as is, likely due to the larger dose, and the slimmer taller 54mm portafilter

So odd I think the pro could have been made obsolete if they would have just put the thremo jet and maybe made it possible to pull out the ports filter without making a mess. The fact that you can get the thermo jet in the bambino which is way cheaper is kinda crazy
