Hi Olivia! LOL, no worries about the felt washer, even if you lost or damaged it. Breville informed me that the felt washer is really more for preventing damage during shipping and is not an integral component for the grinder. We've used ours for well over 2 years without it and have had zero problems. We also bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which is essentially identical, and it did not have the felt ring from the factory. Thank you for watching and commenting. Hey, that's great it helped you! Don't worry about the felt washer, it is not an important piece. It is really more for stopping damage during shipping. The Breville Parts Rep told me it did not need replacing, as mine disintegrated. We bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which mechanically is almost identical to the one on the Barista Express. It did not even have the felt washer from the manufacturing process. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it'll really help us out! Thank you, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️

Thanks for this video. It is really clear and comprehensive. Also, even if you don’t pull the mechanism apart, it’s a good idea to at least check the hex nut is secure from time to time. Awesome video... Just a note: maybe mention/warn that the felt washer is there BEFORE you suggest using a vacuum to release the fan. My vacuum had a bit too much suction and I destroyed the felt washer before I learned it was there. Breville is a bit slow in sending replacement parts, but it is received now. Totally my fault, but your video made everything else progress brilliantly. Thanks!

Thank you for watching and your comment, that is a good idea going forward! Just an FYI to help you when the felt washer breaks down, it is not required for use on the grinder. My felt washer disintegrated, and when I spoke to Breville, the repair guy told me not to worry about it. I've been using our machine heavily for 2+ years with zero issues. Apparently, the felt ring is to absorb bumps during shipping. It makes life WAY EASIER without it lol. In fact, our Breville Smart Pro grinder we bought 6 months ago did not even have the felt ring installed. Thank you again for the really positive feedback on the video, it is appreciated! Hi John, thank you very much, I am happy to hear it helped you out! I was raised with the saying "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". Regular maintenance on your grinder will not only help your machine last longer, your coffee will taste a lot better for it! Try doing this in between changing roasts/brands, it makes a huge difference. If you only drink one brand/roast, I'd recommend doing this cleaning every couple of weeks. Once you become comfortable doing it, you will have a turn around time of less than 10 minutes. I hope you'll subscribe to our channel, we need your support! Hi, good tutorial, I did this also and one key point is to make sure all parts are completely dry with trapped water. Especially the fan spreader. This will cause too much humidity in the area that cause a blockage. Dry parts completely. Possibly use compressed air.

Great presentation! Thanks for sharing👏🏻👏🏻👍🏿 4:41 … My 2021-22 Oracle has a 10mm nut, lock & flat washers, but NO additional washers, except felt, below the “fan.”🤔 Great tip using vac to lift the “fan!” FYI: no need to actually wash anything if you use the Breville “Scoop Brush” to clean the fan blades & burr grinder… then use paper towel or microfiber cloth to wipe down parts. Breville “Customer Service” is quite excellent via phone. They sent me videos for this cleaning process. FYI: you cannot over torque the nut, as the shaft will turn. Breville recommends turning grind setting to highest (coarsest) setting to remove the upper Burr Grinder… clean/vacuum it before “popping” it out to avoid a mess of beans/grinds… mine was frozen… twist L-R-L at the base of the folding wire handle. Patience may be required… it will eventually break free.

Great video. Another easy way to get the coffee out of the crevices and to ensure it is dry is to use an air compressor to blow it out of you have one. I’m sure canned air works also but an air compressor is much stronger if canned air isn’t getting it out well enough.

I also wanted to mention I used "canned air" to follow a good drying of the washed parts. It also worked well on the felt ring but you do need to be careful to not direct the pressurized air directly at the felt - use it at an oblique angle to blow the ground coffee off the surface of the ring.

Hi Ken, my pleasure, and thank you for the great feedback! It always makes my day to know that my videos help people out, and I do my best to answer any questions. Once you've got the machine well cleaned out, doing weekly maintenance cleanings is a breeze and you'll be able to skip using the floss, etc. I have an updated clip in the video Shorts category. The felt ring can be tossed out, and it turns out to be non-essential for the grinder operation. I have been told by the Breville parts department that it is really more for shipping the unit. I've used our grinder without it for over 2 years with no issue. In fact, our Breville Smart Pro grinder did not even have the felt ring from the factory. Using the compressed air canister is a great idea! Get yourself a set of grinder cleaning brushes off Amazon, they are inexpensive and really work great. Little late the party, but I would definitely recommend a telescoping magnetic pick-up tool from your local auto shop or hardware store for taking out those washers more easily and not dropping them into the thing. A narrow brush or old toothbrush would also be better for unseating all those fines, and possibly be better than the floss for the "fan gaps". You probably could have soaked and dried out that felt ring, too, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy a pack of new ones online for cheap. Thanks for showing the process, always makes one more confident after seeing it done.

Hi there, welcome to the party 🥳 lol. Those are some good tips as well. Thank you for watching and commenting with them! The felt washer is not a necessary component, per the guy from the Breville parts department. I've not used one in our machine for over 2 years. It was in place for shipping purposes and did nothing essential for operation. In fact, our new Breville Smart Pro grinder never came with one in place. Those felt rings are ridiculously delicate and soaking it would likely cause it to disintegrate. If you have a minute, go look in our Shorts video section. You'll find a few updated tips for cleaning, which actually mention similar tips you gave. This video was a first go at making the cleaning video, and I developed some ways to do it more easily over the past couple of years. Your magnet tip is a really good idea, I appreciate that! @dashbmw agreed, that is a valid point to note. We've been fortunate, even with heavy use for about 9 years, the burrs are still in sharp condition. Hello Hiba! You are very welcome & we are delighted to hear the video helped you out! Regular maintenance of your grinder & the barista machine will help you enjoy amazing coffee. As a rule of thumb, I clean our grinder weekly. It keeps everything running smoothly & I get to see if any parts look like they are wearing out. Thus far, we have had our Breville Barista Express for about 7-8 years without a single problem - it has been a superb machine! Being a coffee company & avid coffee drinkers, our Breville gets a ton of use. You should also notice better flavour with your coffee after cleaning the grinder too. Thanks for the video, helped me clean my sorely neglected Breville. Here's a few additional things I did that may be helpfull; - After you remove the parts, first I vacuum the coffee dust. Take a portable vacuum and tape a straw to the inlet. The tape can be wrapped in a way to reduce the larger vacuum port to the straw. Works great to suck out the dust and fine coffee bits. - To clean the inner parts, I spray a paper towel with rubbing alcohol and wipe the interior. The alcohol removes coffee oil and dries quickly, no concern with moisture in there. - For the grinder and other parts, I put them in a oven thats just a little warm, like 100 degrees, for 10 minutes or so. Good way to make sure they're dry. HTH

Hi Kev, thank you for the info! Those are some great additional tips to try out. Did the rubbing alcohol cause any residual taste? It'll definitely remove the oil but be careful too that it doesn't make the plastic brittle. There is a lot of grinding activity and you don't want to potentially compromise the strength of the plastic parts. I'm not saying it will, just be cautious about it. Plastic is made from oil/petroleum, so you just don't know if it may affect its strength. Thanks for your comment and for watching, it is appreciated! I hope you've subscribed to the channel, more great stuff coming. Cheers, Rick 😊👍☕

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee I don’t think it left any taste behind, it evaporates quickly. If there was any residue the first beans through it “washed” it away. That vacuum idea is a great one. Why not use it to get the grounds out of the machine when all the parts are removed? Plus, use a tooth brush to clean in those hard to reach crevices on the fan. Buy spare felt washers and replace ever five or six cleanings. Oils build up on them and the oil goes rancid which adversely effects subsequent grindings. Clean it every 3 or 4 uses or weekly, whichever comes up first. Those coffee oils stick to everything inside the grinder and start going rancid (see comment above).

Hi Mike, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, I use the vacuum to get the grounds out of the machine. The toothbrush idea is great for cleaning the fan! No need to replace the felt washer, Breville told me that it really was installed for shipping and not necessary for the grinder to work or protect the grinder. I have been using it for about 10 months without the felt ring without consequence. You are correct that cleaning the grinder is very significant for maintaining good flavour and is also important when changing beans. Thanks again and we hope you have subscribed to the channel! I found when tightening the closed nut that I used a small spanner on it and tightened it until it started to turn them stopped at that. I also found a small circular filter for a vacuum cleaner that was a bit bigger than the size of the top burr unit, cut a 6mm ring off the outside of it then pressed it into the gap where coffee beans and residue usually gathers, cut it to length and put the hopper back on. Now, when I clean it I only have to carefully remove the filter and shake it out.

In the manual, Breville describes putting the grind adjuster to '1', then loosening the nut, then turning the grind adjuster to 16, then removing the top burr. Your approach was much easier and direct. What's the purpose of making those double settings? Also, in the spare parts and accessories page on their web-site, they do NOT show the felt washer. Is this even a necessary part? Thank you for posting this, it was VERY helpful.

Hi there! Adjusting the grind setting to 1 may help reduce any pressure on the grinder but I've not found that necessary to do. I've done this cleaning on my machine well over 100 times and not had any issues from not setting it to 1 first. The felt washer is not essential. I have spoken with Breville and it is installed mostly for shipping. They do not sell them as replacement parts, though they will send you one if requested (they did for me). However, after mine disintegrated, I never replaced it. Breville told me that the felt washer really has no benefit to the operation of the grinder and I can continue to use it without it. I have done so for well over a year without any negative consequences. Thank you for watching and commenting, I appreciate your support! Hi John, Thank you for watching and commenting, I am glad you've found the video helpful. I did some research for you regarding the metal washer that goes under the fan in the grinder. It is a bit of a tricky part to find information online. I know some variants might have 1 or 2 washers, but I believe the 2 washers together would equal the same thickness as the single washer. It is my thought that these washers just act as a shim to ensure the fan is at the correct height. I have found a page you can order the washers: www.ereplacementparts.com/breville-bes870xl-the-barista-express-parts-c-116052_116055_290179.html I believe the washer you need is listed on 06.28 and is part number SP0001574 and lists for $3.99. @GroundsForDivorceCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mikkel, thank you for watching and your kind comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. When you say the part is stuck, I'm assuming you're referring to the bottom burr grinder. Are you able to lift up the bottom burr grinder and the fan as one piece from the body of the machine? If so, I would be inclined to soak the bottom burr and the fan in quite hot water (not boiling hot, you don't want to melt or deform the plastic body of the fan). The hot water should cause the metal to release. If unable to lift it out, you might try very carefully tapping on the bottom burr. I'd highly recommend putting something (piece of plastic or wood or a cloth) on top of the surface of the burr before tapping on it so you protect the teeth of the burr from damage. *I've never experienced the unit being stuck like this, so I am using my best guess how to separate it. Let me know if any of these ideas work...Best of luck on it! Cheers, Rick 😊 👍☕️

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Hi Rick, Thanks for the help! Unfortunately I am completely unable to lift up the bottom burr and therefore also the fan. I can move it +-10 degrees to each side, and lift it 2mm up, but thats it. It seems hard stuck to the bolt in the middle. I've tried tapping it with a wrench, but nothing happens. Haven't tried water, as i'm afraid of the implications of it. I was trying to clean it, because it kept jamming on some of the lighter roasted beans i bought.. Have you had anything similar happen?
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikkeld5995 Hi Mikkel, that is a tough situation! I know this is a stupid question but I will ask it just in case - did you remove the nut on top of the bottom burr? Also, when I said to use water, I meant only after the bottom burr and fan came out and if still stuck together. Do not use any water in the actual grinder machine mechanism! Is the unit still under any warranty program (either 1yr Manufacturer's Warranty or did you buy an extended warranty)? If no longer under any warranty, I would look to get a pair of pliers and then put some sort of covers over the teeth on the pliers to protect the teeth on the burr from getting bent or crushed. If they get damaged, it will not align properly with the top burr and will cause further damage. Once I had something to make sure the burr does not get damaged, I would use the pliers and try working the burr loose. You will need to be very careful not to damage the bur and/or the metal drive shaft. It is extremely unusual to hear of it being so badly stuck to need this level of force. However, it sounds like the mechanism is having some sort of mechanical issue doing the grinding. If you are still unable to remove the burr, I would suggest taking it to a repair depot and asking for a repair price quote. Please let me know how it works out for you and I wish you success! Cheers, Rick

@thomasgentil4907 Hi Thomas, thank you for watching and commenting. Two important things to remember: 1) Clean the grinder whenever you change roasts or brands to ensure proper flavor. 2) At a minimum, clean the grinder out at least every couple of weeks. Oils from the coffee beans will go rancid and will negatively alter the flavor of your coffee. Once you've done a deep clean like the one in this video, you can get away with a condensed version. Check out our KZbin Shorts section for a 1 minute video showing a simplified cleaning that I think you'll like. Does this actually make a difference in the taste of your coffee? I am worried about doing the full disassembly because I might screw something up, especially the felt washer. I understand that all of the coffee grinds in the nooks and crannies will be cleaned out, but won't they just be replaced by new grinds after you use the grinder a few times. Won't any grinds in there just become inert and neutral regarding flavour transfer?
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee 6 ай бұрын
Hi Wayne, Yes, cleaning it regularly makes a big difference in flavour of your coffee. The grinds are organic and the oils in them will go rancid over time. It will taint the flavour of your coffee. Cleaning it out will also extend the life of your grinder. Dont worry about the felt ring, Breville had told me it is really only for shipping purposes and does not require replacing. We have operated ours for over 2 years without it and have not had any issues. I hope this helps you out and if you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it'll really help us out! @@rinacigana3127 Hi Rina, sorry to hear you are having issues with the grinder. It could be a variety of reasons, are the coffee beans fairly oily? Oily beans will gum up grinders, causing you to have to clean more often. As common practice, I clean ours weekly & have zero issues. You can skip washing the parts if you do the process regularly, just give the parts a really thorough brushing off. Is it very humid where you live? Are the beans dry when you add them to the hopper? Make sure that you are not storing them in the hopper. Keep the beans in their original bag they came in. Please let me know if this helps. Cheers, Rick

Hello Rick, I followed all the cleaning steps just to make sure I was keeping up on maintenance of my machine. However, now I can get the grinder to grind my coffee fine enough to get correct pull pressure - never had an issue before and I’ve gone through the steps again on the grinder. Not sure what happened.
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee

Hi Scott, No worries, sorry you've had some hiccups. I've never encountered any issues where cleaning will cause the coarseness to become affected. How do the teeth look on both burrs? Are they still even (no nicks or dings)? Are the edges still readonably sharp? If all looks good, then you need to look at the parts to ensure you've put them back in order. Also, let a tablespoon or so of grounds run through first to fill the fan up. It may need to fill in some of the cleaned voids to provide back pressure in the grinder (this is just an assumption though). If that is not the issue, how does the unit sound when operating? Does your model have the adjustable ring on the top burr? If it does, you can undo the metal clip that looks like a handle, then rotate the top ring one number smaller to go finer. Try these steps and then let me know what you find. Fingers crossed for you! 🤞 Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕️

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Thanks for the reply and I did go back and double check how I installed the grinder parts. All looked good from that end, and the parts look to be in good condition. The machine is about 3 years old and has been amazingly consistent (until now). The main thing I noticed after doing the deep clean of the grinder is that the grounds setting seems way off and too course. I can get good pressure on the gauge if I put the grinds through a second grind with another coffee grinder I have. Not ideal! Also, a question I have is that my grinder settings on the Breville go from 1 to 16. In the instructions that came with it, it said to reset the grind level to 5 but that is still too coarse and even going to 1 and setting the adjustable ring to a finer setting doesn’t seem to make enough difference. Not having my machine working perfectly feels like having a car in the shop - life is on hold without a good cappuccino in the morning!

@scottdouglas7781 Hi Scott, sorry for the delay, I didn't get a notification of your reply. 😖 Okay, so we can take the assembly and parts condition off the table. Check out this video link, he does a good job explaining the grinder settings kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKbpJytlMeqbMk Short of this, I've done some research, and it could possibly be one of the following issues: 1) Are you positive that you replaced the metal washer(s) that go under the impeller fan? They act as shims to lift the fan, which also raises the lower burr. The washer(s) are very thin and will make a huge difference in the performance of the grinder. I'm thinking you may not have replaced them. 2) I've read that a slipping clutch could also be the issue, but I think you would hear it slipping. Take the grinder apart again and double-check for the washer(s) under the fan. Short of this, I would recommend calling Breville to see what they suggest. Let me know how you do with it, fingers crossed for you! Cheers, Rick 🤞😬

Hi Karen, thank you for watching and commenting. Don't panic, this can happen if you did not turn the grind setting dial all the way to the coarsest grind setting. Doing so takes pressure off the burrs and will allow you to twist the top burr basket off. Oftentimes a piece of a bean gets wedge in between the burrs and causes the pressure. Just turn the dial to the highest number and the pressure will come off. If this does not work, toss a few beans in the grinder and run them through to clear out the burrs. Hi Diana...thank you for watching and commenting. The felt ring goes in before you put the fan back in place. However, it is not an essential component and is primarily I. Place for shipping/transportation purposes. Ice spoken to Breville about it and that's what I was told. In fact the Rep said don't bother replying it if it is damaged. We've used our grinder (heavily) for 2-3 years without it and have had no problems. Also, the new Breville Smart Pro grinder we purchased last year (identical components) did not come with the felt ring. I hope this helps answer your question. Hi there, don't panic - it is no issue. After posting that video, I spoke with the Breville Parts Rep and they advised that felt washer is of no real consequence. It is primarily installed to reduce vibration during shipping. Our felt ring disintegrated over 2 years ago and I never replaced it. I've not had any problems with it not being installed. Additionally, the Breville Smart Pro grinder we bought (identical grinder components) did not have a felt ring from the factory. Rest easy, your machine is still fully usable without it! Hi Rick - Thanks so much for this great video! I have had an Oracle Pro Touch for 2 years, and cleaned thoroughly - but my issue is that the grinder just stopped working The best I can describe the problem is that when you try to begin the grinding process (on my machine either push button or right rotation) there is a small mechanical sound for less than 1 second (as if the grinding is beginning) and then it stops dead!. Nothing more. Sounds almost like you are trying to start a car with a flat battery, and you get 1 turn then nothing. Any ideas? Thanks for any thoughts and again for the professional video. Take care, Paul

Hi Paul, thank you for your kind words - im glad you enjoyed the video! It sounds like there might be part of a bean jamming the burr. My first recommendation is to take the hopper off, then lower the grind setting to coarse grind to remove pressure from the top burr. Remove the top burr and clean it well. Then remove the nut keeping the bottom burr on, then remove the bottom burr and clean it. I would remove the fan next and clean it and the area the fan sits. We want to make sure that there are no hard bits that could jam the mechanism. I've had other Viewers have this happen. I cannot think of anything else other than the motor for the grinder. Try this out and let me know how you fair up. I hope this helps. Cheers, Rick 😎👍☕️

Hi Catherine, thank you for watching and commenting! Make sure you dial the grinder setting all the way to coarse before removing the top burr. If it is not dialed back to as coarse of a setting as possible, it puts upwards pressure from the bottom burr onto the top burr. If you have any beans or pieces of grinds still in between the 2 burrs, it can also cause pressure. This pressure can cause resistance and prevent the top burr from being able to be unlocked. I hope this helps, let me know! If you haven't already subscribed, please do...we need your help! Cheers, Rick 🙂

Hi Pat Rick...We suggest doing this each time you switch from one type of coffee to another and if you are using the same coffee consistently, do this clean every couple of weeks or so. Oils from the coffee beans go stale and if left long enough go rancid, this will cause unpleasant tasting coffee. Once you get the hang of it, the process only takes a few minutes. You can skip washing the parts each time and wash them every 3rd or 4th cleaning. Trust me, you will notice your coffee tasting much brighter when you keep the machine cleaned regularly!
