A very interesting exBEERiment and a well-done video. For folks who would like to learn more about brewing with Spruce and who have access to Zymurgy magazine there is an article entitled “Spruced up Homebrew” in the May/June 2018 issue. Also, within that article there is a side-bar discussion on the differences of various evergreen trees: Spruce, Pine and Fir. Cheers!

The log luge! Great idea, kinda makes me want to drill a hole through the middle of the log and recurculate through it during the mash? You got me thinking😂

wonderful, festive, and informative episode! never have seen a tree trunk used as a recirc channel lol, massive points for originality. spruce/pine is about the only "non-beer" ingredient i get excited about, enjoyed this a lot. congrats on the beer, looking forward to additional tasting notes. and merry christmas from the US!

That definitely looks like an interesting beer. You guys are always doing interesting brews, I'd love to see you guys do a collab with the Clawhammer Supply crew. I think you guys and them (bad grammar sorry) could come up with something quirky, interesting, and if not tasty, a good warning lol.
@flyingwombattvАй бұрын
Hahaha absolutely agree man!! I definitely want to it would be a sick collab!!

I made a spruce tip black ipa last month to enjoy during Christmas. The recipe was based off of your GoT black ipa recipe and it’s a big boy at 9%. It is super complex and blurs the lines between an ipa and stout but in the end very piney and delicious. I’m trying not to drink it all to see how it develops over time. Thanks for the videos! Cheers and merry Christmas 🍻
@flyingwombattvАй бұрын
Fantastic mate!! Yeah please do let us know how it develops, I’d be curious how it matures in like 6 months from now, I reckon it will morph more and more into a hoppy but complex stout, it’ll be interesting to see the pine development over time too
@VdfabianiАй бұрын
@ Will do! Six months is a long time…haha I’ll do my best to exercise some patience. Btw, how can I get one of your shirts in the US?

Another great Video! I would not have used the chainsaw though - it leaves lubricant oil in the wood which will affect taste and is probably not that healthy either
@flyingwombattv16 күн бұрын
@@randomtilfaeldig potentially, but I’m sure there’s other stuff that will kill me first! Hahaha, honestly though, we did hose down the trunk after anyway and don’t taste it at all, and I didn’t see any other way to make a luge easily

@flyingwombattv It's not every day one has to turn a pine tree into a gutter. I have to brew your recipe this year. Looks amazing! Maybe I'll try a router (Makita - not the Internet-thingy) for the canal. But if the beer tastes good and you didn't die I'd definitely rate it as a succes! Cheers
@flyingwombattv16 күн бұрын
@ hahaha still alive so far and it is delicious, yeah a router could probably work with a large enough bit, let me know how yours turns out

Spruce is not the branches off a Juniper tree, they're different genuses

Yup I have to admit living in Aus means I don’t know a ton about these trees! Just how to brew with them now hahaha

Wouldn't one of the 4 noble hops be more likely used than an English hop? Just a thought. Some think that the Scandinavian wild hops are descendants of Spalt. I think I'll stick to my cinnamon chocolate porter for Christmas. Happy Holidays and Cheers!
@flyingwombattvАй бұрын
Yes very likely, but I’ve been using noble hops so often lately I also wanted to try something a little different. Don’t mind a porter myself, enjoy!

Dudes, what the hell haha, I have never heard of using pine in beer, really interesting content as always, looking forward to the final 2024 beer, fingers crossed for Aussie as Helles!! Unrelated but I just put down a watermelon cider yesterday, 2 whole watermlons, about 16kg between them, I have about 9L of liquid and 2L of pulp, 1/2 tspn of yeast nutrient I ended up dropping in 10L of apple juice today just for volume, S-04, it's fermenting like a kviek, it's just going completely nuts.

Do you know what species of pine you used some can be very poisonous like Australian pine, and turpentine is made from the resin of pine trees
@lachlanmcfarlane4823Ай бұрын
Not saying don't do it but just be careful of what kind of pine you use
@flyingwombattvАй бұрын
Yup this one is a radiata pine, which is fully safe to use and arguably has some healthy properties to it, hahaha so dw we arnt poisoned 😂

funny you put up this video today. I am brewing a raw spruce ale tomorrow. I do intend to make a tea with spruce tips, letting it infuse in very hot but not boiling water. when I am happy, I will cool and proceed to mashing. probably going to add a bit of hops in it. I will go with kveik stranda. Also, you massively overpitched kveik. I go with 2.5g of yeast (dry pitched) per 12 -13 L. So about one packet should have been enough for your entire brew. Kveiks don't care about osmotic shock when pitching in high gravity wort. The yeast is able to stock tetrahalose (4 glucose molecules bound together) inside the cell. This means that when it is added to sugar rich wort, the concentration of sugar inside the yeast is not that different from the outside, negating thus osmotic shock. Anyway, great video. Cheers
@flyingwombattvАй бұрын
@@tim-tim-timmy6571 cheers mate, that’s super interesting! Very good to know for the next kveik beer

Spruce and Pine are not the same tree. Spruce tips and juniper are the most common in beers. Pine can have high levels of terpines. It will be interesting to see how this turns out 🍺
