Brexit is finally over. The UK has finally agreed a trade deal with the European Union - which will start on 1 January, 2021.
But what's in the deal? And what will change as a result?
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The Brexit saga has seen off two British prime ministers - Theresa May and David Cameron. But now Boris Johnson has reached a deal with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU Commission.
After years of debate over the single market, the customs union, tariffs, and the border in Northern Ireland, the two sides have finally found a compromise.
The Brexit referendum in 2016 caused a huge division in UK politics, with MPs split between Leave and Remain. The issue has also divided the Conservative and Labour parties. Some wanted Brexit to be overturned and called for a second referendum. Others said the UK should have a "hard" Brexit, with a more divisive split from Europe.

I feel sorry for the young 'uns that are going to miss out. I lived and worked in Italy back in the 90's and it was a blast, no hassle, no visas. Everyone should travel a bit and take the time to soak up some alternative lifestyles, it just got a lot harder. ? What is it that you don’t understand? Brexit IS over. It was over in January 2020. UK was just given a transition period to adjust and negotiate a deal. UK will now trade with EU countries as a third country = lots of paperwork, bureaucracy and sometimes trade disputes if one party is thought to step outside the agreed rules. Services are overall not included in the trade agreement , so that might be or not be negotiated from here on and who knows how long time.

@@magfes9209 It all depends on your definition of "Brexit is over". If you just mean "The UK leaves the EU", then you're right. It's over. Done and dusted. But a lot of people see Brexit as a process of reaching a new, somewhat stable relationship between the EU and the UK, and from that perspective, Brexit is far from over. This deal is just the beginning.

Complying with the rules of the market you intend to sell in is normal. Japanese companies also have to comply and vice versa. Why do you think vehicles made in the UK for the US market have different rear tail lights? Obviously to comply with US regulations regardless of tariffs or not. What you are describing is not a hidden or unmentioned detail but a blatantly obvious fact in international commerce. Any better examples or are you just simply trying to have a go at the EU?

@samhartford8677

That's because there are no such rules. Complying with product specific rules is taken for granted in international trade. (Only the EU single market and occasional sector specific mutual recognition agreements make it any different. Even the US has less mutual recognition of product standards than the EU.). However, true, the UK needed to abide by the EU level playing field rules (in labour, health& safety, social, environmental and state aid rules), however it did not get 100% no tariffs for that, but 100% instead of 98% potential tariff reductions. Why potential? Because in fact tariffs are lowered only when the product actually fulfills certain product specific rules of origin, not as a general principle (as happens inside a customs union). That is, the UK adhered to current UK standards (not to the lower EU standards) for less access and allowed its future market access to be punished for not adhering to EU level playing field standards. Talk about genius. But I guess that is what one gets when one votes for others to give one what one wants.

Can i ask your feelings on Ireland re-uniting?
@ardakolimsky7107
@ardakolimsky7107 3 жыл бұрын
@@vanmantalks Hmmmm..very difficult question. My feelings are conflicted. In theory, yes, a united Ireland is the logical conclusion to the march of history. I also believe it is the people of Ireland who need to make that decision, but if history has taught us anything, it's that a simple majority is not sufficient to build peace. That is why I believe most nationalists (on the island, north and south) would not vote for a united Ireland in the morning. They understand the future is necessarily a shared one. 51% a peaceful future does not make. The DUP et al, however, are a different breed.Their _stated aim_ is a return to the NI of the 1950s, of the B Specials and protestant hegemony when Taigs knew their place. I got to know the type when I patrolled with the RUC. I watched as they terrorised the marginalised minority, threw them out of their homes, sexually molested young girls etc. I was reprimanded for reporting a notorious RUC officer in Belfast. I saw him molest a 12 year old girl and spit at her mother as her 15 year old brother was held down by two other officers. Last year I was contacted about my statement, made in 1996. Apparently he is only now being investigated. So my feelings on a united Ireland? Those in the south who see themselves as nationalist (the _vast_ majority) would balk at the prospect of having thousands of religious and political fanatics inside their tent. These people would ensure any shared island would become unworkable. It will not happen in my lifetime. The irony is, the Papist Ireland of the 1950s they are reacting to has long since withered on the vine, while they long to reinstate a Presbyterian statelet that has failed once already. I must admit to bias at this point. I lived in Ireland for a number of years after leaving the army, married a native Irish speaker (I was made to feel at home from the first visit to the West. They all knew I was a British soldier, and even included me in rebel songs when at the pub...For example, "Go home British Soldiers, Go on home had a line added "All except for Arda, he can stick around a while" and have worked in Brussels and other European capitals as a consultant since. I have had cause to meet with Irish, British and NI policy makers. The Irish and the non-Brexit British officials have all been incredibly knowledgeable and sensitive to the situation in NI. So in short 😂 It's not going to happen

They were also charging higher prices and oil from EU is highly taxed. Now UK will have to compete with Iran, Nigeriaand Libya for the Chinese oil shares since US doesnt import. (You have to set up a energy department that will organize this. I am assuming there will soon be British oil millionaires. 4) No health care in EU. So travellers will have to have private insurance and they have to pay all the cost. Think about all the people who retired. (These companies will nature offer bribes) 5) Controlling drug dealing is now easier so. There will be some corruption involved. 6) the Queen doesn't have to worrie about EU financial rules when bringing home the loot. 7) UK government doesn't have to be adhere to EU rules when giving information about trade and government spending. This is misleading! No tariff trade deal? Every EU customer who has ordered products from the UK on or offline since the 1st of January are asked to pay approx 30% customs and admin fees at their door before receiving their goods. Most refuse to pay and it is even more expensive to return these.

People didn't vote for "All the benefits of the single market without being in the single msrket". That's a lie anyway, on top of a lie (remaining in the single msrket), because after all back in 2016 vote leave made promises of brexit options that would keep the UK inside the single. market. They have tossed aside those options as though thet were Remaining in the EU buut thinking they would keep all of those votes. Well they have for now but only because they have managed to distract people enough to make people forget and slso claiming that they campaigned for No Deal or for sny old trade deal (no matter how bad it is, snd it is bad) ecen though they didn't. I would be shocked if the toriee don't significantly shed votes once people who voted Leave based in a pack of lies realise it's not the brexit they thought they were voting for.

@davidmurphy563
@davidmurphy563 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, they erected an internal border between NI and mainland Britain, keeping NI in the Customs Union. This is what May's backstop sought to prevent. After signing this the UK announced they planned to pass a law breaching this agreement, breaking international law in the process, but then withdrew it after EU and US condemnation. No backstop is needed as NI is effectively still in the Single Market and in a different economic zone to the rest of the UK.

Idk know but something allong the lines of we "could" be getting more out of our trades and domestic business would thrive with less competition since we wouldnt be affiliated with the Eu. Uk seems to be in a unique spot being one of the eus largest consumers. So idk about the details of the deal nor do i understand the complexities of how it affects the wider economy. I do know its just made a lot of things harder for the people to freely travel and work and a awful lot more paper work for business.
