Peter Lilley claims the UK was able to approve the vaccine more quickly because of Brexit. This is not correct. Under European law, the UK was permitted to act independently to approve the vaccine. The head of the MHRA, Dr June Raine, has been clear that the vaccine was approved under EU law. Asked directly whether Brexit made the process quicker, she said: “We have been able to authorise the supply of the vaccine using provisions under European law which exist until 1 January.” It's annoying and sloppy when interviewers let these falsehoods go by virtually unchallenged.

Hi - The Tory is actually correct here. Most people have forgotten this. It had nothing to do with autorisation. The UK quickly put in orders over a number of suppliers. However the EU 27 went through mass centralised procurement and were behind the UK because they were negotiating on price. When the UK started rolling out a number of EU States started kicking up a fuss. The EU then threatened to seize vaccine shipments saying they were manufactured in the EU. The Rejoin lobby here naturally agreed that the EU was right however the UK still got the shipments. Remember Vaccine Nationalism.. this was the next tactic of the pro EU zealots in this Country desperate to crush any possible benefit of Brexit. They demanded the vaccines belonged to the World and that the UK was being selfish. Remember no one is vaccinated until the whole world is vaccinated? In the meantime EU states like Poland and Hungary had expressed a wish to buy outside the EU procurement plan and were threatened by the EU with fines. In the end the EU backed down and they bought their vaccines from Putin i.e. Sputnik amongst others. The final twist was the pro EU shill you mentioned saying we approved the vaccines under EU Law i.e. completely ignoring the fact that procurement was the issue and hence the myth was born.. we could have done this in the EU and hey look EU States bought outside the EU procurement programme.

All absolutely true… it’s a dangerous bit of disinformation that was spread through the media at the time of the referendum and ever since, and it’s been allowed to stand as “fact” in the public discourse instead of being immediately debunked. All the people for whom the idea of booting out so-called “unelected” policymakers immediately appealed when they were dissatisfied with the state of things in their communities and countries (almost entirely likely to be due to the Conservative government than anything the EU was doing!)… I’d be willing to argue we might have had a different outcome in 2016 if the public narrative and media coverage had been more grounded in reality and facts, instead of desperately trying to present both sides as having an equally legitimate and factual grounding, and lending air-time and credence to the right-wing anti-European and pro-nationalist collective, who were pouring huge amounts of money into a systematic campaign of misinformation and disinformation, ultimately for their own ends. This guy should not be still perpetuating that bit of disinformation… though it’s not as if the House of Lords is in any way elected or democratic, and there’s no way for the will of the people to remove the likes of him from their positions!

Conveniently forgetting that the commissioners and president are elected by the EU council which is formed of the heads of government which when the UK was a member would have included the UK prime minister. In effect the EU commission is the same as the UK civil service. EU Council = Cabinet that sets policies. Commission = civil service do the paper work to enable policy which then goes back to the Council = Government for approval before going to be European Parliament = Westminster. Her father was an EU director general when she was a WEF trustee and she was appointed president to the EU. See how it works? Her husband, Heiko van der Leyen is medical director of Orgenesis which made massive profits on covid vaccine. So, no conflict of interests there... Why are so many left-wing people so utterly ignorant of facts?

He said that, to his surprise, our post-Brexit exports to the EU had faired much better than expected - even better than our exports to countries outside the EU. But wasn't Brexit supposed to offer us unlimited opportunities to trade outside the EU and make terrific, profitable deals with the rest of the world? If our post-Brexit exports have done better in the EU than our exports worldwide, imagine how wonderful our EU exports would have been had we STAYED in the EU. Matt Frei is correct, Peter Lilley is telling untruths and half-truths. Had the UK remained within the EU the UK economy would be in FAR better fettle than it is now, as Matt Frei has rightly pointed out. And the 'red tape' has increased massively, leading to a huge drop in exports to EU countries, not only of fish and meat, but also of Financial and Legal Services, because we are no longer in the Single Market or the Customs' Union. As a result of Brexit there is now a shortfall of 1 million workers, both skilled and unskilled. Part of the reason for our current high inflation is that as a nation the UK is unable to supply the demands - not that demand is too high, but that the sortage of workers is preventing sufficient productivity. As a result, therefore, what we really have is a productivity problem, caused mainly by Brexit. Peter Lilley is of the hard-right, anti-trades unions, anti-regulation, anti-workers' rights, anti-NHS, anti-environmental protection, anti-welfare state, extreme Neoliberal wing of the Tory Party. If these same questions were asked of almost ANY economist, you'd get some VERY different answers to those given by Lilley.

00:30 The money that was "sent" to eu is like this: You decide to sell your wares at a flea market. The flea market charges you 10 upfront. But you are expecting to sell wares for 100. You could decide not to spend those 10 and then be happy with the fact that you kept the 10 (not being in the EU). Or you can spend the 10 and be happier that you got the 90 (being in the EU). So yes. The money that was "sent" to the eu is the fee to be apart of a market that enables you to earn a lot more than the fee.

How come they always had the right to veto joining new EU members? How come they had the right to close their borders whenever they wanted? E.g. like Denmark did when the first Syrian refugees came to Germany XD etc. And finally, how come they were co-creating the same "restrictive EU laws" they wanted to get rid in the first place?

00:40 On this point it is actually backwards. The UK used to be apart of the EU and had veto power. So if there was something the UK didn't like they could veto it. Now that the UK is not in the EU, it doesn't change that the EU is the largest and closest market that the UK needs to sell and buy from. But now since they are not a member, they dont get to decide any of the rules that they have to follow. So this is straight up backwards.

As someone who works in Gov procurement that statement that emergency procurements would have been vetoed by Europe is balderdash: The European procurement process he's talking about (and which we still had in place, and will still be in place until the Autumn this year) allowed wide latitude for emergency funding of medical emergencies. Foot and Mouth purchases took place under those regs and I don't recall any slowness in our responses, at least relating to Euro bureaucracy.
