Күн бұрын

The end of Britain as a United Kingdom. Is that just one more painful Brexit legacy?
Scots who want independence and the Irish who long for a united country may see this as a game changer.
Joining us at the Roundtable is Chris Curtis, Politics Research Executive at YouGov; Ellie Green, Head of Engagement at the Henry Jackson Society; Thomas Hennessey, Professor of Modern British and Irish History; and Alan Sked, founder of UKIP and Professor Emeritus of International History at the London School of Economics.
Roundtable is a discussion programme with an edge. Broadcast out of London and presented by David Foster, it's about bringing people to the table, listening to every opinion, and analysing every point of view. From fierce debate to reflective thinking, Roundtable discussions offer a different perspective on the issues that matter to you. Watch it every weekday at 15:30 GMT on TRT World.

Here's to the end of the UK, and an Independent Scotland, Independent Wales and a United Ireland.

Glad the message is getting out there. Unite the Celts. We need a united Celtic federation of sorts. Independent Scotland, Independent Wales and a United Ireland each with EU Membership. We could trade *around* England. The Scots will take one for the team...to prevent any hard borders on the island of Ireland... we will put the hard borders between England and Wales and England and Scotland. This way Ireland gets the peace it deserves...and the English get the hard borders that they deserve.

How can that UKIP guy be a professor. He talks like he understands concepts like a child. He doesn't make arguments from substance or evidence or even crooked ideology. "It will be better because I am an optimist.The economy will improve, standards of living will rise, and then things will get back to normal." Absurd!

No talk of what Wales wants? Unite the Celts. Independent Scotland, independent Wales and a united Ireland. Working together in some kind of federation, maybe? England can have it's hard borders. Scotland will happily put up a hard border against the English...and if everyone keeps having these discussions without consulting Wales...I'd say they'd happily have a hard border too with England. This way international trade can continue much the way it is...only England isn't part of the club anymore.

I get that. The complacency of the rule Britannia types is astonishing. Maybe a bit of disaster experience will drive out their delusions and later generations will sort it out

10:30 Professor Sked (UKIP) singing the joys of the Union: It works and it works to the benefit of the various nations inside the UK. We could travel anywhere we'd like, we have the same prices for food, the same taxes, except in our devolution there's the variation in taxes". He goes on that historically the nations have been through a lot together that shaped them to feel to belong together.. Isn't it ironic that he rejects the EU yet uses the same arguments to argue in favour of the Union?
@Prometheus4096
@Prometheus4096 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! Why didn't anyone say 'All those arguments apply to the EU as well'. This is also the big problem with Brexit. UK is a miniEU in itself. There is a degree of symmetry. Almost all argument for UK leaving the EU apply to any nation leaving the UK.

so the union of the UK brings benefits and shouldn't be broken up, but the union of the EU which also brings benefits should be broken up by the - unified - UK leaving. Professor UKIP & Little Miss Engagement Head are hypocrites who are struggling mightily to maintain some form of coherence and are failing badly.

Claiming the enduring of a union since 1707, while "forgetting" that Ireland is independent since 1921... weird. :)

The English need to had the Irish problem over to the EU. We need to build a new Hadrian's Wall and urge everybody in England who want to remain in the EU to emigrate to Scotland or Ireland.

In Europe there is now only Germany that matters. UK has been in decline for 100 years so why is it still talked about. It has the same relevance today as New Zealand.

germany matters because it is the 4th largest economy in the world, uk comes at 5th, France at 7th, italy at 9th. thusly, i am baffled by your statement since 4 of the top 10 economies are in europe

the UK irrelevant? it has a permanent seat at the UN security council, is one of only 4 ountries to spend 2% on NATO, has nuclear weapons and is the 5th largest economy so not exactly irrelevant

90% of british economy has nothing to do with the eu. one of the many brexiteer claims. the value of every pound in the uk has been affected by the brexit debate prior to brexit.

Professor Sked, the medium term economic outlook for the UK is a worsening of trade, balance of payments and internal investment. The Pound may or may not drop further depending on the vagaries of the markets, in particular bond vigilantes and what the BoE does to shore it up in case of a further downdraft. There will be another advanced economy recession before Brexit Britain gets anywhere close to repairing the damage from Brexit and that will hit the UK even harder. You crow about the threats of "project fear" not having been manifested, but economies don't die overnight: it takes a long time to kill them off. You're already seeing damage from Brexit: the UK has gone from 6th to 5th largest world economy; it has gone from the leading to bottom in the advanced economy growth table; foreign direct investment is falling along with London house prices; and as London goes, so goes the rest of the market. Falls of 30%, if they happen, don't happen overnight: it takes a continued reduction of asking prices over many individual sales to sink an illiquid market like the UK housing market. Foreigners with long term horizons will continue to take advantage of a weakening currency so long as it's relatively orderly. A lot of pro-Leave "experts" like Professor Sked, even though he kindly admitted to being a historian, not a prophet, are going to be eating crow if there's a hard or no-deal Brexit and the UK standard of living sinks. People with skills will leave. People without skills, like Ellie Green, should also leave and go into the world and get some experience before spouting neocon blather.

"Nobody wants a hard border." Ok, so UK Brexit people. You are leaving because you want your own hard border. A border separating the EU and the UK. So where do you want it to run? If not between Ireland and Northern Ireland, you actually want to annex all of Ireland into the UK? I mean, if you don't want it around Northern Ireland and you don't want it to be in the sea between the two islands, where else can it be?
