Which Labour in 2005 promised a referendum on independence their Manifesto then reneged on a 61.8 % electoral turnout of which they received 35% of the vote . I love history and I grew up in a town where a battle of the English Civil War is recreated every January by the Sealed Knot. it is a glorious site with Roundheads and Cavaliers marching down the street either shouting for the King or Parliament. The sight of it transports you back to the 1640’s and we know how it all ended as King Charles the first lost his head. The people this time are unhappy with Parliament who forget that they are there to listen to the people! Perhaps our PM is deaf as he seems to be totally ignoring the majority’s wishes. Some people say that there is the frightening prospect of another civil war, but hopefully not, as the government need to stop their blatant disregard for the people and country. 🤔

@kiljoy32542 сағат бұрын
Something I posted just after the riots; I found some definition of so-called ‘far right’ on the HuffPost; I think it’s actually quite useful, not that agree with all of it. Some quotes and commentary: “The extreme right wing would be Political Fascism. Fascism can be defined by the autocracy of a leader or government, a strong nationalist agenda and a pro uniformity approach. Diversity is not encouraged within a Fascist ideology. The emphasis is on conforming to the unified goals of the state.” I’m not actually convinced any of the rioters had real convictions relating to notions of an autocratic leader. As I understand it, Giovanni Gentile was the ‘philosopher’ of Fascism and his motto went something like ‘everything within the state, nothing outside the state’ and, consistent with this, recognising the achievement of a fellow traveler (comrade) Lenin congratulated Mussolini on taking power. Diversity, such as it manifests according to liberal progressive cosmopolitan Utopianism, is not to be encouraged; that said I suspect a majority of rioters (not merely protestors) would be sympathetic to the achievements of Katherine Birbalsingh and the Michaela Community School were they to visit and be properly introduced. “The far right of which Resisting Hate and other anti hate groups speak share certain key characteristics. The first is Nationalism. It is important to distinguish Nationalism from Patriotism. Patriotism being love of one's country whereas Nationalism is the belief that one country and its people are superior to others. Patriotism can be found in both left and right wing politics. Nationalism is a right wing ideology.” I don’t really recognise this definition of Nationalism; I agree with Yoram Hazony’s definition, and any superiority (really success) that may be achieved paradoxically has more to do with humility, not the hubris that we see in nations blighted by prideful ideology and therefore deeply resentful of successful (superior) nations. “The right have a strong sense of national and cultural identity which can be a positive thing but the far right take this further and perceive integration with other cultures as a threat to their sense of identity. In doing so they reject the concept of diversity and start to see those of different races or cultures as potential usurpers of their country and diluters of their cultural values. This can lead to unrest within communities and prejudice toward those not deemed to share the same racial or cultural background.” No not ‘the far right’, the right see (not perceive) that too much immigration, particularly of the aforementioned cosmopolitan utopian kind are simply a threat, and prejudice, such as Edmund Burke identified, is an essential part of human nature, and important guide to navigating these matters. “The far right appeal to a sense of elitism. This is closely linked to the idea of racial and cultural preservation but with emphasis on the fact that a 'superior' community is being eradicated. This can be seen in far right white supremacist groups who call for more breeding among white people to ensure their race survives the 'threat' of blood mixing with other ethnic groups . It is not hard to see how closely this elitism is linked to racism. It is equally not difficult to see how this idea of racial purity invites a parallel with the Nazi Germany obsession with the Aryan race.” I’d be interested to know just how many people actually have serious convictions in this regard as opposed to a resentful, unthinking , adoption of certain elements of said ‘elitism’ on those occasions they feel most aggrieved by deeper justified grievances. “The growth of the far right can be attributed to the focus on a sense of community. Using similar recruitment rhetoric to a street gang, far right leaders offer individuals a sense of belonging and pride. This can be a powerful tool, particularly among deprived areas with low employment which is often the demographic where far right activism is the most prevalent.” I think there’s significant truth in that, but, again, the ‘far right’ label is incorrect. Lastly, whenever people use the term ‘far right’ ask them what they make of this quote from the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: (I hazard a guess they won’t like it): “Moses repeatedly criticises the Israelites, telling them, ‘It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going to take possession of the land’ (Deut. 9: 5). This note is sustained to the end of the prophetic age. Malachi, last of the prophets, says, ‘From the rising of the sun to its setting, my name is great among the nations . . . but you profane it’ (Mal. 1: 11-12). This is a point of immense consequence. A chosen people is the opposite of a master race, first, because it is not a race but a covenant; second, because it exists to serve God, not to master others. 5 A master race worships itself; a chosen people worships something beyond itself. A master race values power; a chosen people cares for the powerless. A master race believes it has rights; a chosen people knows only that it has responsibilities. The key virtues of a master race are pride, honour and fame. The key virtue of a chosen people is humility. A master race produces monumental buildings, triumphal inscriptions and a literature of self-congratulation. Israel, to a degree unique in history, produced a literature of almost uninterrupted self-criticism.”
