Brian Bolland comes across as a really nice fella here. I’ve read so many of his interviews and books but couldn’t really get a grasp on his personality until watching this. I like to see that comic creators have that glint of excitement when talking about comics.

Favorite SHOOT so far. Had the pleasure of meeting Bolland in Boston back in 1990 and he was just like this- Humble, kind, generous and completely gregarious. Wonderful interview. Seeing Jim & Ed stunned by the Tank Girl covers was gold.

Man, this was absolutely fantastic guys!! What a freaking treat to hear Mr. Bolland just free-wheeling along in conversation. So good...sooo good. And all of the music bits as well! Outstanding! And he drops in a Ween reference to the Boognish as well! And Bill the Cat to boot. Outstanding. And what a humble and genuinely pleasant guy. Great stuff guys, thank you.

And as a lifelong devourer of comics, graphic art & illustration who can't draw for shit, yes...it absolutely is magical to get to peek behind the curtain of creation. I absolutely love being able to pore over the details in original art, or watch process videos and hear more of how you all approach the work you do. Endlessly fascinating and a pretty kick-ass aspect of the current age.

Bolland is wonderful. His Judge Dredd art was so inspiring when I was a kid and first saw it. I would buy comics just for his covers.

You guys are the alpha and omega of channels for creators. It's hard to wrap my head around how well you combine your knowledge, skill, charisma, and love for your art and the art of others. Cheers from the other side of PA!

I've always loved Brian Bolland's art, and when I read the Art of Brian Bolland he sounded like such a great guy. It's incredible to hear an interview, and learn that he is truly a delight. Thank you for hosting and posting this.

Thanks for this treat, guys. I started reading 2000AD from Prog 30, so Brian is amongst the first batch of artists whose inimatable style I could instantly recognise. I'm so happy that he went on to join the British Invasion, and is still churning out top-drawer covers. I was lucky enough to have a Future Shock I wrote published in Prog 2023, and I'm kicking myself that I didn't think of writing comics 30 years earlier. Perhaps I could have developed enough to have worked with greats like Brian. So looking forward to more 'Shoots'.

In the early to mid-1990s, I would go to various conventions on the east coast, and there was an art dealer with a large portion of Brian Bolland's originals. There were Judge Dredd covers, as well as Animal Man covers and a various assortment of sketches. Seeing those originals triggered one of the most significant creative growth spurts I've ever had. So I'll be first in line for that Bolland artist edition.

One of the things I'm happy about is that in the 80s, things changed up in both the UK AND the US in terms of comics. I'm always fascinated to hear 2000ad guys talk about this because the industry was similar in a few ways to the US where you never got your artwork back from these shower of bastards (don't look up Robert Maxwell, it'll only make you angry) and up until Kevin O'Neill went against the grain and put a credit on the Prog, none of them had been credited either (Similar to Marv Wolfman although minus the pun). I can only imagine how enticing it would sound to be told "Yes, you get payment for reprints and you get your artwork back AND you get well paid." Ah well... Fingers crossed you guys get McMahon on as well. He's an absolute gent.

In the mid 70s, Bolland and Gibbons drew a superhero comic called Powerman that was made specifically for the Nigerian market. A bit before my time but older comic readers in Nigeria remember them fondly.

Another great one! I was delighted that Brian mentioned Bruno Premiani, a very under appreciated Silver Age artist, with a fascinating life story. I’ve loved Bruno’s work ever since I was a kid reading DC’s digest-sized reprints-shortly after I discovered Brian as the Green Lantern cover artist. There is a definite connection in the precision of their line work, and their attraction to the odd and offbeat. Another artist that I think of in connection with Premiani is H.G. Peter, the first Wonder Woman artist, merely because he and Premiani were almost a generation older than the first wave of 1930s American comics artists, and their quirky styles really stood out by comparison. It would be great to have you guys break down some Golden Age H.G. Peter and Silver Age Premiani.

Brian Bolland is just the coolest guy on Facebook. He shows off Silver Age DCs from his personal collection, and he’s so nice in responses to comments (and the commenters are very reverent, as we should be). I remember his covers on Green Lantern in 1980, which were his first American covers and they really stood out, they were so different from what DC was publishing.

I am a Brazilian fan and met Brian Bolland at Gosh Comics (London) when I was on vacation. I didn´t have ANY Bolland comic with me nor money to buy the comic he was releasing at that day (Bolland Strips), but I had the chance to talk to him, he payed me a lot of attention and was SO NICE to me. Thank you Mr. Bolland, a true gentleman !!! :)

Bolland's Dredd is superb. Was blown away by it as a kid when I saw his Judge Death and Dark Judges in 2000AD. The Dredd Eagle covers are next level for sure and The Killing Joke also kills it. Be rad to see Bisley on one of these! Super humble dude and, from my experience, loves a good natter! Well worth a convo!

Very much as the title of the video says: THE cover artist. Few artists have produced such iconic cover work. Everything the man does is instantly memorable and eye-grabbing. He is one of the few artists where I will pick up the comic just because of him doing it, regardless of title or inside artist. One of the great things about his covers is that they usually do tie into the story of the book itself. It annoys me when the cover has nothing to do with the actual issue or they're simply poster type of covers. In his case, even if they are simply the characters posing in the cover, there are story elements in the image that will let you know about the story within. I think that's one of his most underrated features. He is a legend and seems like such a cool dude. I was drooling over seeing the original art he was showing off. So gorgeous.

Not an easy interviewee. Bolland clearly has a very fertile imagination, that compels him to ramble off into tangents.. Bolland is a genius artist that makes me feel a bit sad, because I'm also an Original Art collector. There was a time when you could still find pencil prelims to his covers. But I think now that he's gone completely digital, there's really no "new" art of his, to collect..
