I think the biggest problem is everyone is so fixated on life being similar to the life here on Earth. Who would even begin to think for a single minute that alternative life forms in other galaxies would look anything like the human being or living species on our planet. One of my favorite movies that is super plausible and possible is called arrival. The species of extraterrestrials that came to Earth were nowhere near anything we could even comprehend. The communication and technology in which they possessed isn't even fathomable to our society.

I watched a BBC documentary last year. On it a cosmologists said, go out into the middle of the Atlantic ocean and scoop up an egg cup full of water. That's equivalent to the proportion of space we've looked at for life.

You mean our current understanding of physics. My brothers and I saw a glowing orb in the sky that was hovering for about one minute before shooting into the sky at a crazy speed that defined our understanding of physics. This event happened while camping in southern Utah in 2005. Seeing the glowing orb move the way it did blew my mind and seeing made me a believer. Our current understanding of physics is limited. The orb moved in a way that defied our understanding of physics and gravity. I thought UFO’s were a Hollywood thing or something that crazy people claimed; however, seeing it for myself changed my mind. The orb was quiet, pill shaped, with no signs of propulsion.

For me, far more interesting (and terrifying) than the Zoo Hypothesis as a proposed answer to the Fermi Paradox, is the Dark Forest Hypothesis, as depicted in Cixin Liu's brilliant 'Three Body Problem' series of books. It's based on three axioms, as explained by one of its central characters: One - intelligent life is not only present, but abundant in the universe. Two - survival is the primary need of any civilisation. Three - civilisations expand over time, but the total available matter in the universe remains constant. Under these three axioms, it paints a horrible picture: life everywhere, but since growth is constant and resources are finite, each galactic civilization is strongly incentivized to destroy any others upon discovery. The only defense against this is to remain unnoticed. It could be why we haven't encountered aliens yet - they're hiding, and for good reason. We meanwhile, are like birds chirping incessantly into the darkness, running the risk of attracting hunters. Bit dark, but fascinating when you start to explore it.

@@egodrunk It comes down to what the author calls 'the chain of suspicion'. Essentially, if you discover another civilisation, you must determine if that civilisation is hostile or benevolent. If they pose a threat to you, or may one day pose a threat to you, your best option to ensure your own survival is to eliminate them. If they look benevolent to you, that's great, but how do they know you mean them no harm? Even if you appear to come in peace, how can they completely trust that you mean it? This chain of suspicion happens with humans (take the Cuban missile crisis as an example, where it almost led to all out nuclear war because neither side wanted to give an inch) but as we are all the same species and the differences between countries are small, the chain of suspicion is short and can be overcome. Between interstellar races however, the differences are far greater and the chain can grow to be all-encompassing. A channel called Quinn's Ideas explores the concept in depth from about 12:50 onwards in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epvSenZ6ottnpa8 and will explain it better than me, but I highly recommend reading Cixin Liu's trilogy. It's some of the best sci fi I've read in a while.

My own personal twist is the analogy of having a good life and driving by a bad neighborhood. Would you stop to hang out with the locals on a really sketchy street? Especially if you have a nice car? I absolutely believe there is so much good going on in the world that we are just not paying attention to it. That said you cannot deny there is so much bullshit going on in this planet because of humanity. Wars, corruption, greed, fear mongering, hate, pollution. So the statements that I’ve made are based upon relative assumptions based on what I know about humanity, and what it would take to visit this planet from somewhere else. A. Any species capable of interstellar travel, has likely evolved beyond its own flaws and extinction event to survive, thrive, and indulge exploration on a scale far beyond what we have achieved. B. Any species that has survived its own extinction event has likely matured regarding its theological, biological, and emotional evolution to coexist, so as to not kill each other C. Any species that is evolved beyond war and fear likely has vastly different cultures and paradigms on life. Being capable of interstellar travel will likely mean they have all the means necessary to live comfortably, and would have no necessity to invade and subjugate species on other planets. D. So compared to us, I feel it’s a pretty safe assumption they would likely be quite virtuous and compassionate compared to us. Sure I could be wrong, but I have my reasons as stated above. Your analogy about wild animals, killing each other seems a bit flawed to me. Male lions will kill the Cubs of other male lions to ensure the strength of the pride. It also reduces mouths to feed and ensures that the alpha male lions cubs will survive. People, however, will screw each other over For money or social media clout. We murder people in other countries for our theologies and their resources. Hell sometimes we murder people just because we are having a bad day. So I would say that humanity is capable of great things, both virtuous and horrific. Far beyond what wild animals do. And as for animals, preventing extinction, nature has been taken care of that for them. As prey becomes insufficient predators will decrease in numbers. That then allows prey to flourish, which follows success for predators. The cycle goes on. I appreciate your willingness to comment. The issue with being able to detect an advanced alien civ is also one of timing. If they have moved on from radio waves, which is likely, then they are not randomly blasting waves for us to detect, but they were in their past. However, we have only been looking for 60 years! That means, the windows of time in which they were using radio + the travel distance from their planet to our would need to fall into the last 60 year window. That seems like a really tiny chance.

I think any species on any planet that becomes technologically dominant will destroy themselves long before they can get out of their own solar system. It is a secondary characteristic of the tribalism needed to win evolution. You can't win evolution without anger towards other groups of your own species. i once saw a video of an untouched tribe in amazon forest who immediately ran away seeing humans with camera, phones , etc. By his perspective, world is just forests, water, hunting, and sleeping. He will think he is the most intelligent person in the entire world, but he doesn't know 4000 km away, we have invented internet, telephone, cars, airplanes, spaceships etc. For him, travelling 4000 km will take him 4 years maybe since he only knows how to walk. But for us, 4000 km will be covered in few hours from airplanes. While we may see ourselves as a sophisticated and knowledgeable species It is estimated that 90% of all human knowledge has been acquired in the last 100 years. Also estimated is that about 50% of our current scientific beliefs are incorrect. There are elephants , orangutans, dolphins, and octopus which all have the same capacity to recognize themselves in a mirror like humans. They're the only ones besides us that can do it. I can say with 99.9% certainty that there are many other civilizations. There is an intergalactic council that includes about 2000+ civilizations. Not everyone there is like us, I mean not all biological species, there are other forms of life there, energetic, hybrid, etc. Our Earth is monitored by about 30 civilizations, 2 of them are friendly to us and protect us from external contacts. They are the same squirrel species as we are and their inhabited planet is located 17 million light years from us. The size is 1.5 - 2 times larger than our Earth. Why don't they get in touch? One of the rules in space is not to interfere in the affairs of any planet. They have a base on the moon, NASA will never tell you about it.

Alien life visiting Earth or not wanting to identify themselves is like comparing the likelihood of an ant living in Australia wanting to visit London, England. Just as the vast distance and differences in culture and environment would make the journey daunting and potentially fruitless for the ant, so too might extraterrestrial beings find the idea of revealing themselves to humanity unappetising or unnecessary. The complexities and unknown factors that would come with such a meeting may be enough to keep them hidden in the shadows, observing from afar much like the ant may prefer to stay in its familiar surroundings rather than venture into unknown territory.

Should call it the Star Trek Hypothesis, it was a major law/code to not interfere with undeveloped species. I don't really think that's the reason we haven't had contact with life forms from other planets. The ability to travel the stars in any reasonable amount of time is the most likely issue, and why would they come here? We have nothing to offer, and fear of conflict would be a reasonable thought to avoid contact. Not sure if there is any standing theories on this, but another issue could be no life has a chance to make it much further then where we're at now. Asteroid impact, super volcano, war, famine for many different reasons, ice age, greed/economy, etc. It's possible most life in the universe will perish either by their own doing or by natural causes.

It's the sheer distance; I agree with you. And even if some alien species might send a generation ship the individuals that arrived here would be very different from the ones that embarked on the journey. Life forms tend to evolve in response to the environmental conditions which they encounter and they are very much a function of it. Their bodies will very likely not be able to function in the same way in space. There might be divergent evolution due to their having spent so much time / having been born in space.

I recently read the book "Rare Earth: Why Complex Life is Uncommon in the Universe" by Ward and Brownlee. The authors contend that simple, single-cell life, such as bacteria, is likely quit common in the universe, but more complex multi-cellular life may be exceedingly rare and so-called "intelligent life" (whatever that means) would be rarer still. Excellent, thought-provoking book for those interested in the subject. Spoiler alert: Don't hold your breath waiting for that signal from outer space.

Read issac asimov's foundation series. He described a galaxy full of humans. It will make the empty universe feel warm and fuzzy because we will fill it and bicker over it. My theory: earth has everything that is needed to fill the universe. Simultaneous expansion of humans and companion flora and fauna in all directions means the universe may not be big enough for us. The cumulated expansion speed can be infinite and depends only on population size. So the light speed is not a limit.

I noticed that in stating the distance to Proxima-B, they say it is 11 Trillion Kilometers from Earth. So, if we plug that into our space calculator, we get: 11 X 10 to the 12th power (for trillions) X 10 to the 3rd power (for kilometers) for a total of 11 X 10 to the 15th power meters. And since the speed of light is 3 X 10 to the 8th power in meters per second,. We can work out the distance in light years by dividing 11 X 10 to the 15th power by 8 X10 to the 8th power and get 1.375 X 10 to the 7 power. Then we need to divide this number by the number of seconds in a year (3.154 X10 to the 7th power) to get the distance in light years. So, that's 1.375/3.154 = 0.4359 light years = 5.2 light months. So, it takes 5.2 months for light to reach us from Proxima-B. And that is the time delay in seeing images or receiving radio waves from that distance.

Personally I think the biggest problem with finding other intelligent life is the time problem. Great and extremely technologically advanced civilizations could have risen and fallen. Nothing is forever and as large as the universe is and since we appear to be in the younger part of the neighborhood the "self replicating robots" or just civilizations that have become extinct could be everywhere trillions of light years away. Who knows for sure? At this moment in our history we don't have that answer.

"Life as we know it" is a very overlooked statement. Our knowledge of life could be obsolete as compared to other intelligent forms of life if there is other intellectual beings in the universe. There could be different routes for life to evolve that we can't currently comprehend at this point in our knowledge of life. We assume we fully understand how all life could possibly be formed and that could be a false belief. I'm not that intelligent myself so I could just sound like a complete dumb ass but it's always been a thought. What if a different form of life is created through different means and methods? What if that form of life is a form of life we are totally unaware of. I mean we've only been studying this stuff for a very short tiny period of time as compared to the age of the universe.

Given how we have treated the Earth so far, if we were to expand into the galaxy, how would we treat it? Now, let’s look at AI. What happens if it attains consciousness and a sense of self? It could evolve and make superior iterations of itself, almost at the speed of light, meaning it could speed up evolution and increase its power by billions of times. Can you imagine the amount of destruction that might cause to our galaxy and maybe the universe as a whole? All this leads me to the conclusion that for the universe to have survivef 14 billion years, there might be a mechanism in it to ensure that intelligent civilizations can only evolve so far. We may have reached the end of the line.

Which hypothesis? Brian Cox was saying we just don't know. Given the evidence that's all we can say right now. Everything else is just empty speculation. You can't talk about probability when you only have one sample (our own planet). Untill other life is found you can't possibly say how probable it is. We havnt made much progress on technology regarding seeing under water and many deep trenches in the ocean wouldnt show up on scanners. Who knows, could even be a gigantic cave down there and they are living under our mantle. Abstract thinking is refreshing, i love thinking about the unknown.

I find it much more likely that we’re classified as a "dangerous, aggressive, and armed species" and were rightfully contained on our little planet until we’ve developed to be more preferable fellow campaigners. Also the existence of sophisticated cloaking technology must be considered.

'Our governments keep all findings a secret humanity is not ready to know about' - Those same governments of 195 countries have somehow managed to come to some sort of unilateral agreement over hiding all this super alien woo...yet remain ideologically, politically, sociologically and economically divided in literally dozens of ways, and more, and in some cases antagonistically so, but they are firmly committed to keeping the alien stuff secret. It just doesn't work as an idea does it.

I think the universe has an age to it and older life forms have been evolving much longer in certain galaxies. I look at arthropods and can’t help but to marvel at certain insects incredible acts of evolutionary feats that they are capable of. Scale them to size and give them a large brain and that is what I imagine will be the first intergalactic travelers. Something more formidable and suitable for space with natural abilities to endure time and space?

If 1/10 planets are in the habitable zone and there are 20 other factors needed to harbor life such as an magnetic sphere. Then using math there is a 1 habitable planet in every 10^20 stars. Or 1 in every observable universe. It sounds somewhat reasonable when you factor in certain star types, asteroids, and a million other factors we don’t know about.

I am absolutely, 100% sure there are other inteligent life forms in the universe and the problem is that we are flesh and they are spirit and we will know everything after life. When we die, that is when we will get our minds blown of how much was just infront of us and we couldn't see it.

All that needs to happen is for a lifeform to be able to survive and reproduce as then it becomes intelligent by it's very nature! Also, the chances of there being a more advanced lifeform than us are very slim because the amount of luck involved in regards to elements, both organic and chemical having enough time to reach the point of self awareness is astonishing!
