this is fascinating! i love the interplay Ferneyhough is evoking. it really shifts music away from it aristocratic past when it was essentially traded as a commodity from rich to servant, back to its communal aspect.

In 1977, the first Ferneyhough I listened to on the radio was this "'Time & Motion Study II' for cello & electronics". I recorded it on cassette tape and listened to it many times.

Wow. This opens up some doors to Ferneyhough's almost unaccessible music. Especially from the performer's view. Still, for the listener this music is IMHO almost impossible to listen to without the score or at least some instructions from the score. If you don't wan't to spend 22 minutes, the part 14:08 to 16:22 might give an impression of what Ferneyhough's (chamber) music is about.
