Brian Fields was once religious, but an experience at church camp caused him to acknowledge his own skepticism. His journey ultimately led him into atheist and humanist activism.

Gage Blackwood my exact thought and what made me non religious. I want to believe in a creator, but I don’t think he is all knowing, all good, and requires worship. The Bible is quite literally evil. I question how people don’t realize this.

Manipulation - this is literally the thing I was pondering about after attending a church camp where I "gave my life to God" and decided to leave university for the seminary. And this very thing made me think more about the manipulation of both the religious people and the belief itself. Eventually I left and am now an atheist!

Lou DeKrisse Thanks! I would say I'm not using faith in anything (or at least I hope I'm not). I have trust in science because of its reliability to produce results. Faith is believing without evidence and is unfalsifiable, so I don't think one needs it in science.

Theism is an addiction of thoughts. Theists mistake attention getting motivational reward neurochemicals evolved for energy gathering for the perpetuation of the species as a paranormal event (Holy Dopamine Ghost). These neurochemical processes reinforce pathways in the brain in order to repeat thoughts, and, or behaviours. What would the average person experience if they believed they won a million dollar scratch-off ticket? That same feeling through thoughts is achieved by drugs like alcohol, nicotine, and cocaine (Dopamergic release). Now imagine that same person refusing to look at the back of the ticket that reads "Redeem at 123 fake st Anywhere USA". Now apply this analogy to someone believing John 3:16. Check out the science, and history in the playlist & description area. If you find it sound, and worth spreading? Please do so, and help educate people not yet in this cognitive pitfall inherent in our evolution. Thanks! The Holy Dopamine Ghost & The Jesus Myth: kzbin.info/aero/PLQATeZAnm87BaJjBtM1vMIq_gHRmBq3ie

I was Assemblies Of God, and it starts as a child and by the time you are an adult your brain is completely washed. In fact, it was my zeal that drove me to study not just what the Bible said but all about the Bible. I was shocked to find out that the four gospels were written by anonymous authors 60 to 90 years after the death of Christ in a language that Christ did not speak. It just went downhill from there. Then there was the realization that not one single prayer I had ever prayed had been granted.

Native Atheist Stop putting Ostrich down, he's speaking the Truth, which can be found in only one place--Jesus Christ. And if you deny it, then Jesus has a message for you taken from the Bible: Matthew 10:33 "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven." As far as your atheism goes, you've made a choice, albeit the wrong one. The First Commandment tells us to "Love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength." When you stand before the Judgement seat of God, how are you going to explain to Jesus that you don’t believe in Him? It will be a very awkward moment. You may not realize it, but the Lord puts certain loving, caring people in your path, shows you certain things, like kindness and love to inspire some love of God from you, but, if you have a hardened heart, even these things will have no effect on you. Because you have convinced yourself that there is no God. In my own life, I've experience miracles and feel God's presence with me all the time. I talk to Him throughout the day. He doesn't answer in a voice, but through signs and through my conscience. And miracles? How do you explain them? When they are documented as 'unexplained by science'? 1). Through out history, many people have come forward and said that they experienced stigmata, or injuries similar to that which Jesus Christ received during the crucifixion. The most famous case was that of Saint Padre Pio who suffered wounds that would bleed and heal and then occur again for fifty years. He was studied by several 20th century physicians. They were baffled and could not find a reason as to why he was bleeding from wounds which corresponded with where Christ had His wounds during the crucifixion. 2). Sister Therese Neumann was a German Catholic nun. From the years of 1922 until her death in 1962, Therese Neumann had consumed no food other than The Holy Eucharist, and drank no water from 1926 until her death. In July 1927 a medical doctor put her on a watch 24 hours a day for a two-week period. They confirmed that she had consumed nothing except for one consecrated sacred Host a day, and had suffered no ill effects, loss of weight, or dehydration. 3). In the city of Lanciano, Italy, around A.D. 700, a priest was assigned to celebrate the Mass in the small Church of St.Legontia. During consecration, he saw the bread change into live flesh and the wine change into live blood, which coagulated into five globules. Many investigations have been conducted upon the miracle. In 1970-71, Professors from the University of Siena investigated the miracle. They concluded that the flesh and blood are human flesh and blood. The Flesh is a heart complete in its essential structure. The Flesh and the Blood have the same blood type, AB, which is also the same blood type found on the Shroud of Turin and all other Eucharistic Miracles. 4). The first registered Eucharistic miracle of the 21st century took place in the Polish city of Sokolka on October 12, 2008, when a priest accidentally dropped a consecrated Host. He then picked it up and placed it in water, so it would dissolve, and left it in the Church tabernacle. A week later, he realized the host had red clots. Upon closer inspection, they turned out to be traces of heart tissue. 5). The second miracle happened in 2013 in Legnica, Poland. On Christmas day, a Host fell onto the floor. Days later, it began to bleed blood. 6). Lourdes-- The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous on several occasions in a grotto while collecting wood in the middle of February. The local Pastor didn't believe her, and asked her to tell the lady to work a miracle for him as proof. There was a withered rosebush near where the Lady stood, and the pastor asked for the Lady to make it bloom then, in the cold middle of Feb. The next day the rosebush was in full bloom. The Local authorities tried to discredit her claims, but the local people were convinced and the first pilgrimages to Lourdes began a few months later. Many miraculous healings have been taking place there since the apparitions ended, even to this day. All cures are examined by doctors as well as lengthy investigations by the Church before being accepted as being a 'miracle.' Ive been there twice myself. Saint Faustyna, a Catholic nun, was receiving private visitations from Jesus in the 1930's, who told her to write down everything He said and everything she experienced. She did as he asked, and wrote everything down in her Diary, titled 'Divine Mercy in My Soul.' Jesus told her that he is not happy with mankind at all, because man is breaking every Commandment, beatitude, and moral code God has given to mankind. Those visions occurred in the 1930's. He has much to say. I'll leave you with Saint Faustyna's description of what heaven looks like: “Today I was in heaven, in spirit,” she wrote in her diary on November 27th, 1936, “and I saw its inconceivable beauties and the happiness that awaits us after death.” “I saw how all creatures give ceaseless praise and glory to God. I saw how great is happiness in God, which spreads to all creatures, making them happy; and then all the glory and praise which springs from this happiness returns to its source; and they enter into the depths of God, contemplating the inner life of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, whom they will never comprehend or fathom. “This source of happiness is unchanging in its essence, but it is always new, gushing forth happiness for all creatures. Now I understand Saint Paul, who said, ‘Eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him.’” “And God has given me to understand that there is but one thing that is of infinite value in His eyes, and that is love of God; love, love and once again, love; and nothing can compare with a single act of pure love of God. Oh, with what inconceivable favors God gifts a soul that loves Him sincerely! “O my God, how I pity those people who do not believe in eternal life; how I pray for them that a ray of mercy would envelop them too, and that God would clasp them to His fatherly bosom.“Oh, how happy is the soul who already here on earth enjoys His special favors! And of such are the little and humble souls.” God Bless you! Jesus, I Trust in You!

my friend Ostrich KZbin I figured I'd jump in and lend you a little support from that vicious atheist who was trying to pin you into a corner. Most of them haven't even read the Bible, what they spew out is mostly heresy and lies. They listen to what the world is saying, which is anti God and especially anti Christian, not from what God teaches us. They believe the lies of Hollywood, the mainstream media, and Liberal professors, and their smartphones have become their gods; because they don't have a solid belief in Jesus Christ, they fall prey to these satanic philosophies and adopt them as their own. Well, I've provided many examples of the existence of God for Him. I'm not sure what denomination you belong to, but all of us Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ. I'm always happy to help a fellow Christian in need. I've been evangelizing for 31 years, and I've dealt with the atheists before. They're a hateful bunch. Glad to help you. Have a nice day. God bless You! Jesus, I Trust in you!

I'm English so the kind of childhood indoctrination eluded to in the video is very rare. Like most people in Britain we learn about a bit about most major religions and then get to make up our own mind's. I just wish the rest of the world had this type of healthy upbringing.

Voodootree; No Western Europe is not in danger of falling to Islam, that is just an American Christian conspiracy theory. It is true that the Muslim populations in these countries are rising due to higher birth rates and immigration but they are still a small minority of the whole. Also the often stated assumption that all children of Muslims are automatically Muslim by default is not necessarily correct. With access to the truth on the internet there is a growing group, of especially young people, born to Muslim parents that are rejecting their parents beliefs, though many are too afraid to speak out publicly for obvious reasons. Great to see the rise of common sense across the pond in the US.

+Andrew Edis I don't believe what you state. It may have been your good luck to have had atheist parents, but I know of many British people for whom that was not the case. It is the same in Australia, though we seem to have a higher percentage of atheists and those who make up their own religion with no desire to associate with any organised religion. It comes down to what your parents believe.

David Frisken My parents are religious (kinda) but what I stated is true. I've even told my religious parents that I want an Atheist funeral and they've both been to a few so they know and respect what that means and how it goes. Not all religious parents choose to indoctrinate their children and the same thing was the case for most of my friends. Meaning religious parents but Atheist children.

Man that's twisted. Some religious groups really have no shame. The pattern is clear with atheist deconversion stories that I've heard, including my own: something is finally shocking enough to snap them out of the brainwashing and get them to question what they're being told. With me it was finding out just how much of the bible they intentionally left out and how it got me to finally read it for myself. I don't think anyone should be allowed in the church to call themselves a christian until they've read that thing cover to cover as an adult.

Amen to that. It's like telling you _"I'm a the biggest baseball fan there is",_ because I've seen a couple of games on TV. How can you claim that you're a "true (or honest) christian" if you barely opened that book and read through those carefully selected verses, passages and stories? If you haven't read the bible, how can you say you believe every word of it? How can you even call yourself a christian? Christians are like being the biggest movie fans of "Tze Bible", not because they've seen it, but because they saw the trailers and loved them. Atheists are the former fans who _actually saw_ the movie, and rejected their previous position.

Doing something good because : God tells you so? _Then it's an order._ God want's you to? _Then it's a plea._ God is watching you? _Then you do this to impress._ So it's more about _you,_ than about _being good_ when doing good is for religious reasons. It's like presidents shaking hands with babies, and kissing cute coal miners, with a big fat smile in front of many cameras before election day. Being good should be a selfless act of helping because it's important or necessary, not something to pride yourself with, or hope for something in return. This _has to be done_ without a god, else the selflessness is unattainable.

I have the same reaction or lack of reaction as it were. I am glad that many escape religious tyranny and wish them all the best. I walked away from religion around the age of 10. Yes, reading the bible was one of many straws, seeing the hypocrisy of many people of many faiths, the willful ignorance of many, the greed and selfishness of people of faith, the willingness to cause deliberate pain and suffering to others who are not of their faith. Studying history, especially the Crusades where god is evoked in justification for the slaughter of thousands (as well as Joshua's slaughtering of thousands). Then there are the moments of personal experience with Nuns and Priests of the churches my sister and I were forced to attend by our parents. Sadistic nuns and greedy pedophile priests where I literally asked myself ... What the Fuck? I moved on to the next activity, living and learning.

I object to the very title of this site for what it says ans for what it implies. It is becoming evident that all atheists are not well researched as to the science being of a unanimous and single view. All claims that science has conclusively eliminated, or significantly reduced, or will eventually eliminate any need for a designer of this earth is not only a "science of the gaps" argument, but also ignores that such claims are additionally disproven by researchers who have been peer reviewed and published. This is why I have been forced in evidences of this fact to now refer to materialists as "Page one atheists" as were they actually researched only as deep as "page two" of these evidences they would be forced to re-evaluate their position. For instance; There exists a limit to mathmatic likelihood where any truth claim can be falsified simply for the fact that it is so unlikely to occur that the opposite fact claim must be true. This limit is established as 1:10 to the 150th power. Any claim less likely than that is certainly false and the opposite must be true. Finite cosmological constants liklihoods must be multiplied to find an eventual mathematical chance of the existance of all things. This is why the "multiverse" would have to exist in nearly infinite states. However, in the case of higher vertibrates, for example, this must be multiplied by every system of biology that is a cascade function and also every interdependant synchronized biological system. Isaac Asimov, in expression of how impressed he was with the creative powers of neo-Darwinistic evolution, equated that the liklihood of the existance of the hemoglobin protein is 1:10 to the 180th power. He did not seem to realize this is 30 times less likely than the logical boundary which establishes that the opposite statement must be true. This is not even the beginning of the problem as the actual likelihood of all of this happening by means of failed attempts increasing the liklihood of a successful situation is estimated as 1:10 to the trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion. Thereby, the existance of a logical atheist is a paradox.

Richard Madsen There has never been a case of science explaining a gap in knowledge and then a religious proposition overturning the scientific conclusion. However the exact opposite is exactly true. You cannot use logic and reason to arrive and religious claims that offer any kind of truth that reflects the nature of universal reality.

Mr. Feilds, I'll respond to your statements in reverse order. I agree that religious people have had, do have and will have missunderstandings concerning the natural world, not to mention the condition of the human spirit. However this statement holds true for all people of all philosophies. This is because we, as a race, do not yet have all answers concerning the material and immeterial cosmos. Which thing is obvious or no discussions would be held on such topics. Scientists assume the responsibility of accurately describing the material world to the public. Religion assumes the responsibility of describing the philosophical world to the public. Steven J. Goulds' non-overlapping magisteria comes to mind. Other than the Vaticans' telescope, which it seems they publish no findings, I know of no religious / scientific research. Nor am I aware of any scientific / religious research. In short, I see your point and it is true, but what relevance does it have? Are you suggesting against Niel DeGrasse Tysons' statement about public litteracy on science that most people have great knowledge so long as they are not religious?

Actually, philosophy largely has very little to do with religion. There are religious philosophers, but no epistemic claims can be validly made from religion.

Mr. Fields, I should have been more exacting. I was trying to point out that both scientism and theism are philosophical views.

That's very different than what you said. Theism is very weak philosophy.

You mean atheists can feed the hungry like Jesus asked everyone to do. How inventive!

alg1297 LOL atheists do it because it is a good thing for our fellow human beings, not because anyone asked us to do it. Those who do it because they think Jeebus wants them to, do it for points and not because of the goodness it does for others. Sad people who have to be told to be kind or else.

Its amazing how much more fulfilling my life became once I grew out of religion. Now I know when I serve another human, animal or plant, I am truly doing it because I want to help them and not because someone/something told me I had to so that I could get into some magical afterlife. Not only is life more beautiful now, it also has much more value.

Yeah, because no one ever fed hungry people until someone invented the Jesus character.

As a matter of fact he raised up from his knees, because he finally understood how blind and deaf he was, just like you among your friends still are. READ your bible goosed1. From the very beginning to the end. Is that really too much of a more or less mandatory thing to ask a christian to do? He DID read it, just like I did. And he was disgusted, just like I felt. He concluded god is a monster beyond proportions. Just like I did. So shut it, and read your bible!
