As someone who suffers from mental illness I have nothing but admiration for Brian and for the courage displayed by him in bringing this issue to the fore. I'm fortunate that my wife and children stuck by me and still do to this day. Stick at it Brian, things can and will get better. Admire your courage.

Brilliant Brian.. takes strength to do that. I can relate 100% and it is tough. I have given up the drink but that only solves some of the problems. I had to come to terms in forgiving myself and try and move on from the past. End of the day you will always be a father to your kids and they will be so proud of you when you beat this.. that’s what keeps me going. loved ones might move on but in time you realise who really cares for you. There ignorance doesn’t define you

What a good interview. Brian was exceptionally brave. I can really relate to him. Bugger all those who leave, hes right going through tough times proves who your friends are. Hes got good people around him now and thats all that matters, those that left can get stuffed.

Brian From a Bulldogs supporter (in absolute tears) who has always loved and admired your football ability, and been lucky enough to meet you in person. You have turned the corner and this will help, no end. Too see and I know you do deep down, a light at the end of that tunnel. Things will only get better. Stay strong, and know that you are truly loved by so many people, not only as a footballer, but Brian Lake the person. We’re all behind you mate 🙂

True, but unfortunately ( in answer to both you Andrew and to Steven Phillips comment), the sad truth is that since this interview about 50 people would've taken their own lives... Maybe more in Australia alone. Good on him, need more blokes admitting to needing a hand.

Agree mate, I've been married 3 times. I'm 51 I've made between 12-14MIL across my career but due to 3 divorces all i'm left with is a 2 bedroom flat in Western Sydney. These bitches didn't work a hard and honest days work in their lives and they've taken me for everything and the kids which I still bloody pay for!!!

@@garrywallah4966 sorry to hear this Gary but your not alone mate! Yes mine left me when i got sick in hospital for a month when i got out she was gone within a month as i could no longer work! She took our house and her new partner had 2 houses! I ended up in a bedroom at my parents! Im now on disability pension and her and her partner have combined income of 200k per year! Im on 22k pension! No shame actually blamed me and im sure she will tell our boys the same! I understand violence against women needs to stop but us men suffer to in many ways at the hands of women just in different ways! A mans life can get destroyed to! Id rather be punched in the face than loose my home children and money for rest of my life! We all suffer not just women! As you no!! 🤝

Watching this it struck me that living a life playing a game and being paid millions as a young man and receiving fame and adulation does not prepare these young men for the harsh realities of life. Why don't women sportswomen suffer the same mental issue? I think it may be that they have to still work in the real world and are nowhere more as famous as the young men. They often say they live in a bubble, who says that in the real world. Well done Brian I wish you well

i agree, although this interview will help many people who are struggling, it may be something brian regrets in his lower moments in the future, he shouldnt, but he did mention being embarresed about things hed done over the years and i hope this doesnt become something else to torture himself with. This interview could have been done when he is in better condition, and his story would be no less impactful. good luck brian

I like BL, but this is self pitying excuse making. He got drunk repeatedly, did some really dumb things and made some stupid decisions. He was perfectly fine when he left the game and looked to have a really bright future as a media performer. He threw that all away and retrospectively uses the umbrella of ‘mental health’, the prominent sportsman’s familiar refrain, excuse de rigeur. Most people in mainstream society have problems, drink, make mistakes and get on with it. ‘Self-soothing’ that’s a wank. BL is a really likeable guy and a talented person. But he’s worked himself into a really bad situation. I wish him well.
@boysdontcry5487
@boysdontcry5487 5 жыл бұрын
daniel botta Anyone who saw BL before he went through this self induced crisis knew he was a clever, tough, highly successful and talented person, with a future laid out before him. Cheating on your wife, getting into alcohol and drugs, running off on Asian escapades indicative of a fella running away from his responsibilities, thinking he’s beyond the fray, not experiencing mental health issues. Said he enjoyed it until he got drunk, acted like a dickhead and ended up in a Japanese jail. Blew his media career and other opportunities and now waddling in self pity and depression. It’s very sad, but less high profile people just put their heads down and find the strength to fight back, usually without several million dollars and others making excuses for them. Ask his wife - bet she just thinks he was a selfish cheating prick, not a mental basket case.
