Actually, there's *no one* using a 'Red Special' like Brian's, 'Fireplace,' 'Old Lady.' His was homemade by Brian and his father. There's an interesting Wikipedia page on it, if anyone is interested. Great video, thanks Ross!!

Wow, didn't realise it was a 'homemade' guitar. That's awesome. Thank you!

@@RossCampbellGuitarist You're welcome. You should checkout the Wiki on it sometime. It really is very interesting. It took Brian and his father two years to build it, and the wood for the neck came from a 100'ish year old (in 1963) fireplace mantel.

@@RossCampbellGuitarist Great Video, good filming. There are a few BM guys out there that have built replicas of Brian's guitar. This link is an example of that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWGVp2edrqx5a9U

There is a rig rundown he does where there is a clone that is pretty exact to his guitar. He uses it as a backup when performing. I think it went into production

Brian actually has put near 1:1 replicas of his "Old Lady" into production, but they cost a fair bit and the waiting line is rather long

Another significant element of his tone is the use of coins for a pick. "In addition to using his home-made guitar he prefers to use coins (especially a sixpence from the farewell proof set of 1970), instead of a more traditional plastic plectrum, on the basis that their rigidity gives him more control in playing." -Wikipedia

The treble booster in the Line 6 Helix is perfect for Brian’s tone. Great video on his style!

I love how you explained Brian's vibrato. It's one of the things that makes his playing so recognizable, imo. You paying so much attention to detail blows my mind. Cheers!

Interesting bit of trivia; I read that one of May's inspirations for his approach harmonies was Jeff Beck.

Great Video, I have been looking for a while so have a more Brian May sound in some of my tracks, this will surely help me out. I have only one question, with the 4 harmonies you played, so with the 3th above and below the lead line, when recorded, how would you mix them in the way of panning I mean? Where would you place the lead line and than the 3 harmonies in the panning? I hope you can tell, because I can't seem to find a proper way to pann them right. I will certainly look into more of your videos. Thanks for the inspiration

Thanks for putting this together. Why do digital harmonizers set to G Mag 3 + 5 sound awful? Have been trying to get my TC electronics to emulate Brian's sound. The end result with pitch shift or harmonizer is really awfully synth sounding. Not even close to sounding somewhat natural. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I have a pod go that has a bunch of pitch or harmony settings. I think it has a dual harmony so should I set one a 3rd below and the other a 5th below? Also can set the key, so G major?

Is there any pedals we could use to get these similar harmonies effect like when Brian does when he play live? I was looking at Boss Harmonist and EHX pitch fork but unsure on which to use.

Those arent able probably track 3rds and 6ths across different scales which is very important. Look into the TC Electronic Quintessence.

Thanks for the section on 3rd abd 5th harmonies, but one question, and it's this question that brought me here. He can't play three guitars live, so what effects pedal allows you to harmonize with your lead note and 3rd and 5ths together? Most harmonizers only do two notes.

*** Hey Ross, I could be wrong but I was looking at that site you've linked your courses on and when I clicked on the 'Preview This Course' thumbnail it appears to give away the whole lessons under 'sample lessons'. Maybe it's just me but there seems to be a lot of content in the previews for free. Shouldn't it be just excerpts of each lesson and not the whole lesson??? Not sure how you've set it up but seems odd. J.

So basically, you're turning the melody/solo notes into diatonic chords with the roots being the solo notes, yes?
