Funny how everybody conviently forgets, his "kindness" to the Canadian people. I remember when he sued the Canadian people, for "slander" for 2 million dollars and won, over his inside dealings on buying airplanes. Allegations, later proven to be correct... the government at the time said it would cost more than 2million dollars to litigate the issue and recover the money... so they let him and by extension his family keep the money. This son of his and his daughter with political ambitions of her own, need to voluntarily return that 2 million dollars, it does not belong to them. Normal, average everyday Canadians get chased down and harassed by Revenue Canada for a few hundred dollars owing... yet, the Mulroneys get to skate away with 2 million, they don't deserve.

Mulroney was perhaps not very popular because of the GST and Free Trade, but these were very good things for Canada. Because of this, I voted Conservative in a federal election, and it was the only time I voted for that party. He stood up against apartheid and tried to bring Quebec into the Canadian Constitution, with his proposed Meech Lake Accord. He was a very good friend of Reagan. I do agree that his lawsuit against the government for $2Million for slandering was misplaced, but in the end, the Chrétien government had to apologize to him. The Conservative Party of his time was nothing like it is today. Terms "woke" did not exist, and the population was largely split on the policies of the government, rather than deeply divided today, along social issues and beliefs. Politicians did not have social media back then, and spoke much more carefully. One such example was Flora McDonald. Ben did not have to put himself out there do this interview, but as a public figure, I think he might have felt the need to speak on behalf of the family, and I thank him for this.

Well, Mulroney pretty much killed a federal party, so I'm not sure about how many canadians remember him for 'kindness'. However, one thing thats true is he was one of the earliest western leaders to tell South Africa it wouldn't prop them up. Mind you some say that was for business reasons but still it was in conflict with Reagan and Thatcher. But I don't think anything he did was THAT bad that he should be vilified. Its been awhile since I read Stevie Camerons book "On the Take" however.
