I think this is Eurocentric when he says we didn't know species could become extinct. Just one different perspective would be Native Hawaiians, who had in place controls for harvesting species to prevent extinction. They learned this lesson the hard way when they arrived in the island about 3,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found the remains of species that they apparently hunted to extinction then. But they learned and made rules.

I think you are correct about that statement being Eurocentric and Brian would be glad of your correction. I think there is a similiar story here in Australia, with the early Indigenous people hunting to extinction and learning and making rules. I did learn that from Brian's telling of the Universe Story actually, that humans caused extinction/devastation wherever they went and as long as they were nomadic it was less of a problem. When they settled or needed to return to a place, they began to make rules and come into relationship with the place. Also Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry (his mentor) speak often (Thomas in many of his books) of needing to listen more to the wisdom of Indigenous peoples and to women's wisdom. But back to your point of Eurocentrism, Brian would need to be more careful in his wording; that is, when he says "we" that he means the common Western perspective, which of course has dominated so much of the planet.
