Brian sounds very well in this interview. Such a shame his mental health declined again after this time.

He even sounded younger too as he gave up smoking for a while.

Was great to finally see Brian w/The Boys in 76. I was 16 y.o. then. Was like seeing God.😊

It's amazing how sharp he sounds here. Landy clearly steered him straight in the beginning; such a shame that his greed undid it all.

He sounds pretty together albeit voice got gruffer since ‘73. As others have mentioned, such a shame he really declined not even that long after this interview.

Landy turned out to be a menace, but let's be honest, something good was happening with Brian at this time. He sounds pretty solid throughout the interview, doesn't he? But what followed must have been a nightmare.

Good time for him. This is probably early 77 since he mentions two albums complete (Loves You and Adult/Child) with 15 Big Ones already being released.

I think the real problem was that the band fired Landy in ‘77 before Brian was fully back on track. Stuff like 15 Big Ones and Love You were really just the first swallows of what could have been a new spring for Brian…he apparently tried really hard to stick to a daily exercise regime after Landy’s first firing (Brian apparently hired Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin himself to impose a daily regime of activity as he knew he didn’t have the will power to do it entirely alone) but in reality he needed years more unpicking and reprogramming (I say that with love and respect to Brian, and as someone who has needed a fair amount of unpicking and reprogramming myself) to be fully functional and off drugs for good. Even here he normalises and speaks almost nostalgically about narcotics (saying he was “overdoing the drugs, as we all do”) and I think his unmedicated mental illness and cocaine psychosis were an unholy combination and an almost impossible maze for poor Brian to navigate. Whilst Landy DID turn out to be a horrorshow, he did save Brian’s life and I think, had he been kept on longer during his initial period with Brian, things would have likely turned out quite differently for the group.

Another, sane, therapist could have helped Brian Wilson without ruïning him. I really get sick of seeing Landy getting praise for what he has done. @@PRDewhurst
