I'm with Bill on this one. It sounds like it could be fascinating or a train wreck. I'm hoping and praying for the former. I'd love to hear Brian Wilson's take on country rock.

As a fan for almost 40 years of TBB and Brian more specifically, it never ceases to amaze me how many hours this man has put into the music. It's as if he spent 20 years recording 20 hours a day and still couldn't finish it all. Every time they reaches into the memories chest the strangest projects pop up. And I agree, they are not always digestible things in fact in most cases they explain why they were never released but still, for me an artist is someone who does exactly that, keep doing and doing and maybe within everything he does there are wonderful things and others that are not but the fact of having a life making music uninterruptedly with the premise of an artistic quest and not to be at the top of the rankings is what makes someone a true artist. And as far as "embarrassing" music, still, everything Brian did before the 80's in terms of sounds architecture, I love it, I like the way the drums sound, the bass and the mix of instruments that you don't quite know what they are and that's worth the fact that they are released.

Thanks again, Otis. I hope this album is another gem. One thing got me to relisten to the beginning. Bill DeMain mentioned the Ozark Mtn Daredevils as part of the LA country rock sound circa early 70's. That'd be a big surprise to me, but why I was really sat up and took notice is my great memory of seeing OMD in concert at Birmingham's beautiful Alabama Theater in the mid 1970s during their peak. I still get chills listening to the opening of Jackie Blue.

It's funny you mention this. When I interviewed Fred Vail, he mentioned the Ozark Mountain Daredevils in the context of LA country rock that influenced the project. But I wonder if maybe he meant Poco or the Burrito Brothers. They would've been much more appropriate to the time and place.
@aroe38964 ай бұрын
@@friendlyporpoise I'd chalk this up to a memory glitch, which isn't unexpected given Mr. Vails substantial career. And I'd also take it as a compliment to the OMD to be thought of with the likes of early Poco and FBB!

‘Lost and Found’ There are many treasures to be found before they are sent to the dustbin. The now famous Herman Melville who was not a well regarded writer when he wrote, but his now known short story ‘Billy Budd’ was later to be found in a discarded breadbox after Melville’s death. ☮

Timothy B Schmidts version of Caroline No is great and it’s the best song off Stars and Stripes by a mile.

Watching and listening to this segment, I had the overwhelming dread of this project being scrapped again. Not seeing the light until all parties have long since died. I'll have to read the Mojo article and maybe that will aleave my fears.

If there's a single cow in the pasture, that could lead to "Atom Heart Mother" (referring to the famous album cover by Hipgnosis), the 1970 collaboration of Pink Floyd with Ron Geesin. Similar to Mr DeMain's dichotomy about Brian Wilson's cows, I suppose that "Atom Heart Mother" is either loved or hated by Floydian audience. Anyway, to be revealed next year.

After listening to years of outtakes and alternative tracks from the Beach Boys, Brian and the Beatles, there seems to be something about those days that falls into place that makes the finished product separate from the wood chopping. I hope it happens to these in a good way.

I’m not familiar with the Stars and Stripes monstrosity, but it’s right around the time of The Beach Boys/Junior Brown collaboration. Which I think is great.

I guess I should run that back.. I like Junior Brown’s surf medley, and his guitar playing on 409. Not so much the collaboration with The Beach Boys.

I liked,maybe still do 90s country(havent heard any lately so don't know,but i liked it a lot better than " 90s rock n roll". I LOVE brian and the beach boys, and i enjoyed the stars and stripes album. I listened to it again about a year ago - sounded good to me!!@@keithesaurus

Brian Wilson is regarded as a musical genius. But I've gotten the impression that he was also an incredible flake

As god awful as ‘Stars and Stripes’ is, for those who haven’t heard ‘In My Room’ sung by Tammy Wynette with Brian. It’s a work of genius and well worth a search for (video here on KZbin)

I bet there are several buried projects that got shelved because of the lack of cohesion in the group.
