Being a huge Brian Winters fan and collector, I have always been on the hunt for this footage. This was shown at halftime on March 12th, 1978 during the Sixers/Celtics game. Bingo Smith and Fred Brown were some shooters back in the day. Glad they both were in this HORSE tournament obviously not against each other but they were shooting so good, they’d fit perfectly in today’s game.

Always entertained by these HORSE contests. You can say that Brian was not feeling it that day, some unlucky bounces too. Two all-time great pure shooters, right there, plus they could create their own shot and even score in other ways.

Brian really did have some tough luck, here. Each were great shooters, but he did have some just slightly tough bounces. Tough enough to beat Fred anyhow

Winters was a really good SG back then. But many don't realize how deadly Fred Brown was. Truly feared, deadly AND a creative scorer, not just a pure shooter. He was a difference maker. More than Gus Williams. And I stand by that to this day.

@@Mr.56Goldtop you know though at the time, John Johnson was really the floor General. At least in the half court. Now on the breaks it was primarily Gus.

@@Amick44 After DJ left to Phoenix JJ did a lot of ball handling at the small forward/big guard (6'5), Gus was the shooting guard, but was a good ball handler as well. We went through several guards trying to replace DJ but none really filled the job, but we're still good players. Paul Westphal, Gerald Henderson, Vinnie Johnson, end of career David Thompson, and so on. And of course Slick Watts, lol!

Dale Brown reviewed video tape of Maravich at LSU & charted his shots. He concluded if there had been a 3pt. line in that era, Maravich would have ave'd 57Pts/game!

They were around for the 3pt era. Both played into the 1980s. 3pt shot started in 1979-1980 season.

Each got to shoot it for a few years. Each shot pretty well from 3 range. Just not the kind of volume we've seen the past decade or so.

Milwaukee vs Milwaukee here. Brian Winters was obviously a Buck, but Freddie Brown was actually from Milwaukee and led Lincoln High School to back to back state championships.

Downtown Freddie Brown not only went to Lincoln High School (intersection of Knapp & Cass), but played in the Hillside Projects off 6th & Vliet. On the Sonics, he was a teammate of Johnny Johnson, who went to Messmer.

Wish they had his 58 point game against the Warriors on video. Would have been 70 if they had a 3 point line. Softest outside touch ever and could penetrate with an assortment of double pumps. He took over many 4th quarters to carry the Sonics to victory

I remembered watching this as a young kid. Enjoyed the H-O-R-S-E games at halftime of the NBA on CBS in the late 1970's. Just wondering who did the theme song for this segment? Also, heard this theme song at halftime on the NFL Today on CBS with Brent Musburger. Thanks!

You will never beat Freddie Brown in a contest shooting from "downtown". Even to this day I have not seen anybody that can shoot consistantly from a great distance like Downtown Freddie Brown. There's a reason for the nickname.

The Bucks stopped wearing those uniforms after the 1976/77 season so I'm not sure when these were taped. I believe he went to the full beard during the 1977/78 season. Before that it was just the fu manchu.

Right... You couldn't be more wrong but keep saying that. I guess you were joking because that was a laughable observation. Only thing that really progressed about shooting is 3pt shooting because the 3pt line was a new thing back then (introduced, in the NBA, in 1980) but you could say that close/mid-range shooting has gotten worse along with off-ball movement; you can also look at FT%'s and there's no improvement in terms of that. I guess that in today's HORSE contests everybody is making everything? Go watch some recent ones, in their entirety, with NBA players, and they're not better than this one. In 2005, Michael Jordan said Brian Winters was probably the best pure shooter he's ever seen, for example.

BasketballJones48021 Made no difference to Freddie Brown, even before the 3 pt line he was firing away from 30 or more. If he had the 3 pt line his whole career he would have a huge amount of points more then he ended with. Look how easy he makes those long shots look here.

Freddie brown was a 37% 3 point shooter, despite having a 3 point line the last 5 years of his career. If he had it in high school, college, and all the years of his pros, that would easily go up. But 37% is better than a lot of more modern pros. Better than Jordan, better than Kobe, better than Lebron, better than Westbrook, better than harden. Yeah, looks like you have a recency bias there Johnny.

@@roundtable3501 as a catch and shoot guy who averaged less than 1 3pt attempt per game. There’s no possible way to know if he’d be a 30% or 40% shooter if he took more, which means taking more difficult ones.
