i think an important thing to note is that the mixtapes were all added to streaming services on their ten year anniversary’s back in 2021 in march, august, and december respectively. for an entire decade the only way to consume these songs was through the trilogy compilation so to most XO fans these aren’t even bonus tracks anymore, and have become mainstays of the tracklist and the trilogy canon. excellent reaction as always briana!

The title “Twenty Eight” (28) is approximately the amount of grams that makes up an ounce. This is infamously known in the illegal drug trade. The title creates more emphasis as to how The Weeknd’s music has a certain drug inducing effect on his fans. “Twenty Eight” also refers to the fact it’s his twenty eighth official, professional song. (27 from his first three mixtapes, then “Twenty Eight” being the first of his bonus tracks)

In my opinion 28 has a triple meaning. First, it's about his insecurities, and being scared of women knowing too much about him because he ends up feeling weak (which drives most of his toxic behavior imo). Second, it's about fame, because he didn't expect to be that popular and now it's in every facet of his life, so he's questioning if maybe he shouldn't have shown his face. And third, it's about cocaine. 28 is the amount of grams in an ounce, so now cocaine has invaded his home and he can't stop thinking about it and has taken control over him. The weekend is usually very subtle around the meaning of his songs and music videos, and maybe that's why it can be so popular without people getting too deep in it.
