The thing is Ed has an Anti-air for almost any type of jump, the problem is each of Ed's anti airs only works for that specific scenario, like sometimes is light DP , sometimes is hard DP, sometimes is not even a DP and you have to use Standing HK or HK flicker jab.
@sv320996 ай бұрын
I’ve learned that HK and Hflicker are both reliable but require reads and spatial awareness. HK works best in close situations about throw to jab range and H Flicker works as a mid screen jump in response. I am in gold so maybe it’s different but I also have the same problem if not wanting to use DP motions
@hteety8 ай бұрын
Honestly, I'm kind of glad to see even a great, seasoned player can be lacking in something as simple as a DP on hitbox. I just started playing, and I was getting pretty frustrated at what I thought was something "easy" about fighting games, which are the motion inputs. I still occasionally get fireball instead of DP, and i honestly also somehow get the opposite too, when I'm doing a step forward -> fireball and don't cleanly move past the diagonal input. It's also nice to know I can climb at the same time I'm working on it, and that it's not like a pre-req to be able to do a DP everytime to be able to climb. Obviously, I should keep practicing it, but it doesn't have to be the reason I plateau.
@Brian_F8 ай бұрын

Ed has iffy anti airs yeah' but you gotta look at the angles theyre covering. St. Hk is for a high angle that can can cancel into command dash. Light dp has no movement so you have to time it well, but its upper body invuln. His cr. Mk also AAs, but isnt consistent. It is a god tier drive rush check tho Tbh i think ed should be played as a pseudo zoner who can rushdown or get good oki. Kinda like guile. Guile isnt reacting with flash kick AAs most of the time. Hes conditioning you to jump when he wants you to instead.. holding some snatchers and cancelling them into backdashes can bait jumps, DIs, and some supers or you can mix it up and either throw it, or dash up off at

while you're talking about why you're playing ed right now, i'd love to hear something detailed about the characters you've played in your life and about what draws you to characters mechanically, maybe something about your own core tendencies in character selection (e.g. i understand you like jp and oro in part because you're into combo optimization a lot, but i dont really know what you liked about balrog beyond that he was good when you picked him up. with g and balrog i think you like robbery?). a lot of conversation about character selection i think is ready for more than the simple (but true) stuff people like to say lately like "pick a character you like" and "you dont actually need to pick a simple character if you're new" and all this. i feel often people dont have the knowledge or motivation or whatever support to think deeply about what they do like in characters they play, especially mechanically, and i think you could offer a great example of introspection about character choice preferences. anyway keep cooking big man

But to be fair, one of my favourite parts about fighting games is reading people and making prediction plays, so that probably plays a huge part in why I love Gief so much. Love conditioning players into jumping to avoid an SPD, only to get air SPD'd or lvl 1 super.

Ed's anti-airs are actually kind of interesting, in that they struggle to actually land but when they do, their rewards are really good. DP lets you go into your usual oki pressure, and 5HK can be cancelled into Psycho Flicker and lets you put some pressure on for some good damage. Currently fighting for my life in D3-D4 with Ed, and yeah his anti-airing is really harder than you'd think. I feel like his anti-airs are very good, but a lot of Ed's kit is very committal so it's very easy to put yourself in a position where you don't have time to properly anti-air, and since his close range defense is kinda bad having someone land a jumpin can just lose you the round.
@bm_burger9 ай бұрын
this thumbnail was perfect, I was really enjoying Ed but found that I kept losing these jump-in situations, and so much early launch discourse was gaslighting me into thinking there wasn't an issue with his anti-airs I believe people who say there's more nuance to his air-game, but its really crazy how almost anti-scrub he feels in that way considering he was designed to be so beginner friendly in the last game. (too beginner friendly? lol)

@HydraGR9 ай бұрын
It's because a lot of his pokes are very committal, so you really can't throw them out too much, or you'll get jumped on instantly and lose. After having that happen to you a couple of times you will start to turtle more whether you want to or not lol.

Hey Brian: I know chat is probably constantly bombarding you with this, but are you using the "3-frame upper cut" hitbox shortcut? Basically plink ➡️ into ⬇️ without releasing either, and then press ⬆️+✊️ at the same time with your right hand. It's really effective because it boils the whole motion down into basically two atomic actions: plink with the left hand, complete with the right hand
@Shawn-oh6ul9 ай бұрын
Pretty sure you can just hold the fwd button, plink and release down, then just press punch. If you're already walking forward this equates to just two button presses

The trick I've always fallen back on is "Forward -> Quarter Circle Forward" (or 6236 if you're one of those numpad notation people). The real struggle is calling it without thinking about it for an anti-air, but that just takes practice. In Brian's case it's more about getting the DP motion on leverless, which is an entirely different beast. Of course this habit also bit me in the ass when I tried to learn Guilty Gear +R and they have *no patience* for that bullshit, it's proper DP motions or nothing there.
