Today we're showing an in depth review of the Ballard Inc lawn mower blades available from Ballard Products. Most of you guys know Kory and his incredible line of accessory products from Ballard Inc, and today we're looking at their new line of lawn mower blades.
Ballard now sells a variety of blades, including the Ballard Razor Blades, Ballard Ripper Blades, Ballard X Blades and their new Ballard Saber Edger Blades.
These blades are incredible, as we've been rocking them since last summer and they do an amazing job at cutting grass and pulverizing leaves. These blades actually received an award last year for "Best New Blade For 2020", so how cool is that.
If you guys want to pick some up for your lawn mowers and edgers this year, you can get them at www.Ballard-Inc.com, and promo code Brians10 saves 10% on all orders off the website. Enjoy!

Since the top blade isn't used for heigth cutting, Ballard should design a much lighter version for the top only that just lifts and mulches. This would address some of the worries about the extra weight.

Just finished a season with the razor/Ripper X blades. I do a lot of leaf cleanups (sole operator). This setup saved me a ton of time. We had a severe hailstorm which brought down a lot of heavy green leaves-especially oak leaves. I mulched them several times and bagged them. The X blade setup was great! I’m a believer!

Just adding this for some perspective… the use of 2 ‘lower blades’ (and ditching the flat ‘top’ blade) on an Ego Select Cut 21” mower also made a big difference in quality of cut, bagging and mulching compared to stock setup. Using a high lift plus mulching, off set more than stock offset, can yield great results and only seems to reduce battery runtime some. Even small mowers, as long as they have good power to keep the revs up, benefit from the concept as well.

I'm not a lawn pro, but this simple business observation is that they took what Honda has been doing on their twin blade mowers for years and improved on it substantially to make a better product. This happens all the time in the automobile industry. Remember when you had to get spray in bed liners on your truck after it was purchased and now most automakers have it as an option? I think it's the same principle that is going on here and a tip of the hat to a great business idea that apparently makes mowing that much easier in a lot of applications! Great work guys.

I just started running the high rise blades. They have a better cut quality that the stock scag blades. They do tend to bog down more in taller grass but they are excellent for regular maintained lawns. Only downfall that I see may arise is that there doesn’t seem to be too much meat in the blades for a long life after sharpening multiple times. I can’t speak to the longevity of the blades just yet though

@@mattd8411 I still love the quality of the cut and they still seem to have some longevity to an edge. The only draw back is the slightest overgrown grass will bog the engine down due to the super high lift blade. I’m in the south cutting St. Augustine and weeds. I also think there is a noticeable reduction in fuel mileage with these blades.

Once you get your current customers manicured your work will sell itself. Then you can focus on time and eliminating overlap cutting to save fuel and wear on your equipment. Advertise one cut or a contract till do them all. Put that in your trailer and you'll be surprised at how many neighbors will walk up from time to time and just want a cut you can🎉slip in between contract cuts. Learn about tbe dos and donts of different turf varieties as far as esthetics go once cut. Offer a winter contract as well because there are a butt load of people that have never thought about doing that the just let limbs and tree and shrub manicuring hang in limbo then it's a task. My first job ever es cutting for a recreational department for the city I live in. From high school football fields to grave yards the public soect taught me slot and doing baseball fiends well there s whine different animal in their own right. Awesome that you started a business with your son. Thst sir is how you create a legacy your great great grand himden will be apart of long after you're gone. Well done ..

I recently put the X-Blades on my 52" Wright Stander X with approxamitly 175hrs and within 2 weeks, everytime I disengage the PTO (regardless of following the throttling recommendations) you hear a noise similar to brakes grinding when the pads are worn out and it continues to get worse so it definitely puts stress on parts of the machine! However, I will say that the quality of the cut has gotten better also but if it's at the cost of down time with the machine, I just can't keep using them! I do use a lot of Ballard products and will continue to do so but as for the X-Blades I am going to have to not recommend. With that said, it could just be a coincidence that the noise started right after I put them on (20hrs or so after) but I do feel like the extra blade weight absolutely caused the problem

I did run the x blade setup with 2 standard lift Copperhead blades from Rotary on my 725D Grasshopper. They did mow a little better and definitely discharged the clippings much farther than stock. I eventually took them off because they were extremely hard on the rear pto belts. They would squall pretty bad with them on there. And I did try to use engaging the pto at different throttle levels. I had a set of those blades but the arbor was wrong (my fault). They seem like they would have been good IF I could use them. Just holding them side by side with a used blade you can't tell the difference. You have to measure or stack them on top of each other (for comparison) to see the difference because it was not a huge difference. It was just enough that I could not trust the mower not to have a vibration from the blade being uncentered. It would not just sound bad but maybe cut badly, ruin the bearings in all 3 spindles, maybe even leave an ugly cut and who knows what other problems. As I said the blades were good quality. I just could not use them and not expect at least one problem with them due to them being ones I improperly measured for.

As a custom knife maker I have to ask , if weight is a concern with a regular or an X blade why isn't the blade drilled out with thirty or so .5" holes? I could easily cut blade weight by 50% on the mulching blade , if warpage is an issue then the blade should be tempered to a proper rockwell hardness for increased stiffness.

An easy way to keep under deck clean, use PAM or Silicone Spray, it works great. I have been cutting as a business since I was 11, I am now 67. It is so relaxing to me. Thanks for sharing all you info. \

The X blades sound very interesting. And as I look through the comments I see that they do work, apparently very well. I do see comments about being hard on PTOs and a weight issue. I have a suggestion. What if the upper mulching blade, was made of aluminum?

@@iLLBiLLsRoastBeats I just cut jungles of grass using a walk behind mower. Once I have a new blade, after I get done with one jungle overgrown yard. Im surprised at how dull the blade got. Im no blade sharpening expert. So its easier for me to just replace the blade. I mean 20 bucks for a single 20in blade is pretty cheap. Wish they didn't dull and become damaged so fast. Finding the right blade for the job is one thing. Finding one that is built to last is another.

Tell Kory to sell packs of 10+ mower blades. I dont know if its just me but when I buy mower blades I do not buy a set of 2 I normally buy bulk amount 10 + blade packs of Oregon blades on ebay or amazon. I usually sharpen blades once a week and with 2 mowers I need a total of 5 blades so i like having a extra set of blades sharpened and ready to go.

Dan, we ship them for free so you can order as many (2) or (3) packs as you’d like. We have them priced as low as we can go especially with the rise in steel and shipping lately. Thanks and we appreciate the support.

Just bought the rippers. I wanted the gold hybrid, but it was out of stock. Maybe next year. I mow with the chute block down most the time, so i'm interested to see if i have to double cut as much. Plus it's almost fall time to pulverize those leaves!

Yep not a problem Brian because this is the third time I have mentioned them to you. Didn't they reach out to you for a review I remember the Kavli blade manufacturers saying something to that effect. They actually asked people to give them an honest review with no strings attached no constraints. People with John Deer, Mean Green, Scags like Mike from Something 2look at hey and aren't you friends with him? These guys have been blown away with these blades. Just saying Brian I love these blades I am not a rookie been in this industry for over 40 years not one blade even come close shouldn't we educate and help our fellow workers in the trade.

With the X blade construction, can’t you just cut specially placed holes in the blades to lessen the weight load on the mower clutch?
@xonkthecat8674
@xonkthecat8674 3 жыл бұрын
What if you hit something hidden in a jungle lawn that you didn’t see on a walk through. Cutting holes though does drop some weight it will also weaken the blade to impacts, it may also mess with balance.

X blade adapter does not work on turf tiger 2 with the big block briggs....spun blades together...works well on lower power mowers..pushed threw the spacer between the blades making them not at 90 angle.. actually bent the spacer on all 3 blades
