Nothing but corporatist propaganda. Democrats LOST BECAUSE they tried to be the big tent party. She's literally advocating for the same thing. Purity tests are PRECISELY what we need. STOP BENDING OVER FOR REPUBLICANS. THEY WILL NEVER EVER EVER VOTE FOR YOU. And neither will I. After this disgraceful display, my policy is "No progressive? No vote. No exceptions." Corpo democrats destroyed this party the same as the tea party did to the republican party.

The Democratic Party needs to stop creating laundry lists of logical policies and positions. They need to START focusing on simple, clear, EMOTIONAL positions that naturally support the logical positions. One example: Tim Walz brilliantly said his position on abortion, LGBTQ issues, etc. was, “Mind your own damn business.” Talk up PERSONAL freedom, and getting government OUT of personal choices using this. We end up standing for the same details but the MESSAGE hits differently.

Actually just getting the policies and positions out to the public would make a difference. Finding more and better ways to get it out there is becoming dire. Well said!! And the Democrats did not JUST bash Trump and MAGA (though that is exactly what Trump did vis a vis Kamala and the Democratic Party), they came forward with policies and ideas and an action plan. So Brian and Lis what you are suggesting really is that next time Democrats should just use slogans and hate speech against Republicans and Trump. And keep bashing the thickest of us (MAGA) over the head with it until they capitulate as they did to Trump.

Many Democrats tried hard to control the talking point durring Obama's secund term but didn't do well for a couple of reasons. Honestly I feel like the democratic party needs to have FDR style politics and be unappologetic about it. Its not a problem to show up on new media, you just cant be afraid to push back on them where you disagree. Its only platforming if you show up and are complicitly agreeing to their points because youre afraid of not being invited back. Not to mention, where are the voices of real people in this conversation? I think a podcast style sit down talk with real Americans talking about their issues would be great for this, like a fireside chat but where they mostly listen to people instead of running their mouths. Nobody wants to see party elites sitting around a room talking to CEOs about jobs numbers. Sit down with a McDonald's employee in rural Alabama and talk to them about their problems and LISTEN TO THEM. Stop telling voters what they should want and acting like Hillary Clinton (like you AUTOMATICALLY DESERVE THEIR VOTES). And dear lord yes bring back class politics. Its not left vs right, its UP vs DOWN. And that argument is a lot more convincing when there are regular people that are a part of the conversation.

If an 80 year old man has time to go on these podcasts, I think she could have found the time, too. I will absolutely blame Biden, Kamala and Democrat party leaders for their abject failures in this election cycle. The Democrat party is wholly incompetent. I started working with my county Democrats a few years ago, and it is _shocking_ how incompetent, tone-deaf and directionless they are. If you listed 5 things you think a political party would be doing at the county level, they probably aren't doing at least 4 of them. And at my state level, the party actively undermines candidates by telling donors _not_ to donate to candidates in red rural districts they haven't won recently, but only need to pick up 5-8% to be competitive. Instead, they pour money into urban districts Democrats have held for 20+ years with 80% of the vote. Unfortunately, I don't have an alternative choice to this incompetent party who loves to lose.

I can't disagree more with the entire thrust of this strategist. First she begins with her linkedin resume, which sounds very much like someone interviewing for a job and that's the energy she brings to this interview as a whole; she's invested in getting hired for the next campaign cycle, not with actually resolving the Democrat's problem. And what is the sage of advice of this 'longtime Democratic strategist' - that we should do even MORE of the strategy that has failed to deliver time after time. As you rightly pointed out Brian, many democratic candidates across the country adopted this 'look Republicans, we're just the same as you' and were utterly destroyed for their trouble. Picking on trans people is not a vote winner; the people who are concerned about that were going to vote red no matter what. A potato with eyes can look at metrics from the election and see that Trump LOST votes over 2020. Less people came out to vote for him, his message wasn't compelling. But even fewer Democrats came out; the only point on which I agree with Ms. Smith is that running against Donald Trump was a mistake. The American people (hell, the world at this point) is well aware of his flaws and an obssession with 'swing voters' and 'top-down solutions' is the very thing that turned the electorate off. Even the language being used in this interview, on both sides, highlights the problem: The Democrat 'Brand'. Politics has become a product sold to a consumer, not a process of which people are a part. The institutions of the past that involved average people in political decision making; unions, working class clubs, interest groups have been replaced with companies peddling a product. Kamala raised more money that any candidate in history and it bought squat. The argument that money = speech is as assinine from the Supreme Court as it is from political strategists who think they can alienate voters from the process and replace that engagement with never-ending texts asking for another cheque. Instead of continuing to peddle a failed strategy of appealing to Republican voters and then acting shocked as for the umpteenth time Republican voters...vote Republican, in pursuit of another job from candidates who're uncomfortable with changing what hasn't worked, perhaps Democrats like Lis Smith should take a hard look at why their voters are not showing up for either candidate. The left needs to get off defense. Playing the Republicans at their own game and losing every time is not a strategy.

I love your comment. I do think the discussion (led by Bryan) about how the Democratic establishment engages with the media was somewhat insightful, but the stuff about branding and messaging is the same critique we've heard for forty years. It is missing so many important problems (the Democrats huge structural disadvantage, both self-inflicted and inherent to the system; the Democrats (except for Bernie and AOC) failing to frankly acknowledge vociferously that the social contract, flawed and incomplete as it was, is now totally broken (but use more accessible words) for at least two generations of Americans (and never allowed many groups as much successful participation in it when it was working better). The extreme concentration of wealth and institutions that defend that state of affairs, including corporate Dems, is completely in conflict with a robust, functioning democracy.

@@tiredlocke That's the thing, at least the conservatives are promising to do something... The dems are soooooo hyper focused on the middle class... It's such a stupid strategy. Think about this: Let's say you're parents are working class, you go to public school, it's a decent neighborhood so some of the middle class kids also go to that school. If you're a poor kid, the people who picked on you were middle class kids. Your dad, probably working for a very low wage for a middle class guy's business. You grow up and you get a job, middle class bosses ruin your workday with their bad decisions and clueless takes... You think working class people want to be middle class? Heeeeeeeeeeeeell no. That's just speedrunning your way to a douchebag as far as the poor and working class see it. They don't want to be middle class, they want to be rich, just like the middle class does. Rich enough to get away from it all. So when Kamala was out there talking EXCLUSIVELY about the middle class and that America is built from the middle class and out, working class people essentially just saw a presidential candidate simping for the bullies and exploiters of the working class and poor people..... That drove a LOT of working class people to the republicans, cause the dems didn't even have enough respect for the lower classes to lie to them.. At least the GOP knew the working class existed. We're seeing the same thing happen in Norway right now, where the labor party has been hyper focused on the middle class rather than the working class, so our far right anti-immigration party is _enormous_ now, the labor party literally lost about 10% to the far right.... 10 years of hardcore centrism and catering to the middle class has created a larger class divide... Centrists don't seem to understand that the economy is ACTUALLY built from the GROUND UP.. Not top down. Not the center-out... Labor parties and the US Democrats and pretty much every center-focused party has lost the working class because the working class isn't stupid. They know that fertilizing the flower or the stem does nothing.. Throwing money at the top and middle is not how to stimulate growth.. And the AMOUNT of money you have to throw at rich and middle class people to make much of a difference is ENORMOUS compared to what it takes to stimulate/fertilize the actual roots. The working class and folks in crippling poverty. This insane center-right middle-class ideology needs to be wiped out completely. It's a political philosophy born by white middle class people FOR white middle class people. It totally disregards the bottom and it favors the "job creators" AKA middle class and up. Why not turn working class people into job creators? NOPE! Can't have that! That would be uuuuuhm..... Communism, that would be communism... I swears it, it's communism so we can't stimulate the lower classes...... Burn it all down. The middle class ruined the planet with its fecklessness and exploitative nature.

While I don’t agree entirely that Dems need to fix their message, I do agree that we need new communication methods and new leaders. AOC being cast aside as a leader was a mistake on the dem party. She was on social media the day after the election asking voters directly on both sides why they voted the way they did. That feedback is important to next steps. We need the joy of the Harris/Walz ticket, but definitely the new outlets.

Define "far left". A lot of people would say Bernie is far left, but he did pretty much all right. What we have to do is stick to our principles and get our message out, and unless those principles are anything other than progressive, well we might as well just be Republican-light. And when activists come up with a disastrous slogan like "defund the police", get in there right away and correct the message so that it doesn't land with a thud. A better message would be "restructure policing" or "update policing". And I see the consultants in the Democratic party as being a huge part of the problem. Hillary Clinton had the likes of Marc Penn as a consultant. And I heard that Kamla had Consultants talk her into changing her message midway through the campaign, which was a disaster. Red states suffer from Republican policies such as the way Republican Governors play keep-away with the ACA Medicaid expansion. Tell the red States how much they have suffered from this--how many people have died because they don't have health care. People in red states are poorer than people in the blue states. Drill down on this and let red States know how their government is hurting them. These aren't hard ones.

A unified message is less important than being genuine IMO. There are certain things to agree on, but it's just as important for respectful disagreement on certain topics. Your party has failed on the "respectful" aspect of disagreements, and it has pushed a lot of people away. Trying to force everyone to agree on something like trans athletes in sports or really anything related to trans and minors is not going to happen.... same with immigration, DEI, feminism, critical race stuff etc... you need to allow people their opinions without alienating them from the party.

Everything I’ve read about this tells us that universal healthcare will be much less expensive. So much of the cost of our healthcare goes to support the structure of insurance companies. The CEO is making huge amounts of money. The whole structure is really there just to perpetuate itself. We don’t need most of it. Universal healthcare would pare down the excesses not by reducing services, but by reducing who’s going to be getting rich off of other people‘s health concerns.

When something pops up on a KZbin about this crisis the comment section is full of uninformed people saying women are not dying, that if that many women were dying it would be all over the news!! Legacy media is not reporting on the crisis women are facing during miscarriages or life threatening health issues that require the abortion procedure. So people aren't believing women are dying. This needs to be out there everyday, we need to alert the public of what these anti-abortions laws are doing. 98% of people do not understand the medical terms of the word abortion, they hear abortion they Automatically think baby's being sucked out of a woman's body, when a abortion procedure cleans out a womb after a miscarriage or cleans out infection in the womb. Yes, I agree that this generation has to boldly step up to meet the moment. We are in crutches and wheelchairs. All we have is our voices. Wisdom is knowing that you shouldn't elect Yuppies to government. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2mrfWxtedmEh7s BTW "coffin ready" shows zero respect IMO.

Got news for you Buckeroo. AOC and the rest of that crowd you're so sure should be in leadership roles have to wait their turn. A twenty-something with a few years experience isn't going to be voted in over people that have waited their turns, done the work, and worked their way up over 10, 15, 25 years. That ain't the way it works anywhere.

While Kamala Harris maybe had a message problem at the outset, that was relatively quickly rectified, and she ran on very clear policies that focused on the middle class. It was starting to build momentum, but the MSM continued to perpetuate the notion that she and Walz didn't have a plan, and it had to compete against all the disinformation in the Right-Wing media system. The message was starting to penetrate in some circles and a momentum of hope and enthusiasm was building. Unfortunately, there wasn't sufficient time for it to counter all the misinformation and disinformation in the ecosystem.

Lis is an opportunistic insider. We need to distance ourselves from her like. I personally don’t want ti support s party that sacrifices undocumented immigrants and the trans community in an effort to “meet the voters where they are at”. Why would we trust these establishment Dem strategists in their assessment of “where the people are at”? They have failed us, and strategists like Lis need to move on to a new career. If they like Republican talking points, they should just join the republicans. I’m not the only one on the left who is not willing to compromise in the ways Lis is suggesting.

Absolutely agree to this point wholeheartedly. As a trans person myself I am finding myself starved of a lick of trust from establishment Democrats. They've proven they're willing to toss immigrants and transgender Americans (I was literally born here and yes I'm trans,) on the alter of capitulation to slake the Right's bloodlust for the 1% that's different from them this election cycle at the first drop of conflict they encounter The most recent National Defense Authorization Act stripped the rights of military service members as parents to work with their doctors and clinicians to provide the best care for their transgender children. Every Republican was for it. 37 Democratic Party Senators voted for it and only 10 voted against it. These are parents making the choices for their children with their doctors. This is wholesale discrimination based upon an immutable part of self unless they've blocked this treatment for cisgender children as well, which I highly doubt they have done so as precocious puberty is treated with hormone blockers and Gynocomastia can be treated with surgery for boys who happen to grow feminine looking breasts due to hormone issues. If the politicians think that the community doesn't see what they're doing, how willing they are at the drop of first conflict to throw us in front of a speeding train because intolerance is the word of the lifetime for Republicans - then they are sorely mistaken. We see it. According to GLAAD 71% of Americans say they've never met a transgender person - let alone sat down and had a cup of coffee with them. We're not that different - we are not the caricature that right-wing mainstream media paints of us. We have jobs, families, elderly parents to care for, siblings that we argue with, nieces and nephews that we spoil during the holidays, we have friends that we cheer on and support through good and bad. Some are religious, others are not for various reasons. The impact of economy, the pinch and price of high inflation, the jab and cut of exorbitant medical costs and prescriptions especially, the rising costs of living, of home ownership, these are all things that all voters worry about and our community is not excluded. We worry about these things, as if the incoming administration has its way, we will be even more vulnerable because we won't have federal protection against being fired for who we are. Maybe if the right-wing politicians were less concentrated on dehumanizing the Trans community to kill us slowly and trying to legislate their religion into law, we could have a much more civil conversation about how to address issues that actually affect the country rather than screaming about our rights because we desperately don't want to die - especially when so many of us have only just started finding our joy in living for once.

Im going to wait to finish this video before a full verdict. But at 6:40 ish she goes from talking about how democrats need to be able to step away from the national brand, to talking about how they need to stand against the "far left". That right there is the reddest of red flags to me that these consultants are completely full of it. She went from talking about how the party is currently seen as not wanting to buck the status quo to basically implying that the party needs to move to the right on issues like the border and police reform. Look, like I said I will finish the video before giving a full verdict, but for real who would vote for republican-light when they could vote for the real thing?? Democrats shouldnt focus on being the anti-Trump party, I agree on that, but just agreeing with them more isnt going to win over voters. Not to mention you then lose the left wing members of the party. That just sounds to me like a recipe for losing over and over again. No, the REAL way to show that the party is ready for change is to go fully ANTI-CORPORATE. The republicans could never win on that front and its fucking obvious. Now I'm gonna finish the video, but if she doesnt make that point then I really feel like this is not the person we need to be listening to for advice.

It’s not exactly agreeing with “Republicans” more but not adopting positions that are unpopular and voters do not want. For example, the only people in 2020 who were in favor of defunding the police were white liberals that live in gated communities or safe neighborhoods. The majority of Latinos are not for open borders but white liberals yell at anyone who says the legal term “illegal alien” but ignores how border towns have suffered for YEARS and were called racists by the white liberals if they pointed this out until Greg Abbott shipped asylum seekers to NYC so blue cities saw what states like mine have been going through FOR YEARS.
@mikki344
@mikki344 14 күн бұрын
The far left had also held up progression too. For example, the reason we don’t have anti discrimination laws for gay and trans people at the federal level is because the far left REFUSES allow religious exemptions (RIFRA and Constitutional concerns) in bills like the Equality Act. Also, some trans activists have put some pretty radical stuff in there about trans athletes in sports and other stuff that is very controversial and the majority of people don’t support. As a gay person, I would really like those anti-discrimination laws AND I support religious people’s right to do as they please. The whole point of marriage equality and the de criminalization of homosexuality was the message that “you don’t have to change anything in your personal life, just tolerate us and let us be.” We need to not have maximalist positions for everything because nothing will get done. It takes time but it’s worth it in the end.

@mikki344 look I didn't mention any culture war issues about religious people or trans people. It is such a distraction that people let themselves get tripped up by, but I will comment on it since you wanted to bring it up anecdotally. To speak to you wanting religious exemptions to the Equality act, you do realize that is ridiculous right? I don't want religious hospitals to be able to deny care to gay and trans people, and that is just the ONE of the many reasons that idea is ridiculous. Everyone deserves fair protection under the law FULL STOP. Now, that aside, I want to point out that we need to let people have positive freedoms when it comes to these culture war issues. I don't have issues protecting the positive freedoms of religious people, like their freedom to pray and practice outside of government. My issue is when they scream that they have freedom FROM: gays, trans people, poc. My issue is when they claim that their sincerely held religious beliefs are the reason that someone else's rights don't matter. They want negative freedoms more than positive freedoms so there is my big disagreement there. That said, people WOULDN'T CARE as much about what other people are doing if they had their basics taken care of and felt like they truly had an equal opportunity to succeed in the economy. It's a lot harder to scapegoat when people have their basic needs met. We need to focus on class based politics over everything else because these culture war things won't matter in a fascist state. First they will come for the communists, then they will come for the socialist, and then there will be nobody left to speak out when they come for you. We hold the line of social justice not just to protect those most vulnerable, but also to say we won't even take it if 1% of the country is oppressed because it won't stop there.

@mikki344 do you support trans kids as a gay man? I have friends that tried to kill themselves when they were 10 because they were forced to go through the wrong puberty and had to watch their bodies transform into disgusting men instead of just giving them puberty blockers and letting them decide later. I feel like many people believe the lies about trans people that they do for gay people. "Kids can't be gay; only straight" and such. Also, if we give up this fight, expect backsliding. It doesn't end with trans kids.
