Bricasti M7 Stereo Reverb

You know the old saying: "some plates may drop in value, but most plates go up." This advice doesn't really offer any kind of advice for picking out a reverb, so we enlisted engineer Matt Boudreau of Broken Radio Studio in San Francisco to provide a little guidance.
Matt broke out his studio's two vintage plate units -- an Echoplate and an EMT 140 -- and A/B/C'd them with the plate algorithms on the Bricasti M7 Stereo Reverb processor. Watch to see (hear?) how well the M7 performs on both piano and vocals.

May I please add to this thread. The Bricasti M7 has about 100 reverbs with the latest code burn. You can get another 10,000 reverbs if you plug the right output into the left input and daisy chain the signal. Then, (if you like) take both outputs (single and cascaded) and vary the wet, double wet, and dry mixture panned 9 and 3, and off you go. Lastly, we're going to further "test" this unit and start lightly feeding back the output to the input to see how far we can go. Summary, Take the M7 into a shoe closet, along with your favorite channel strip, and C12 clone from microphone-parts.com, and make your first hit record.

Would be really interested to hear the Bricasti with the top rolled off as its hard to see the similarity between all three. The echo plate seems to modulate much more than the others too?

Bricasti sounds good for a digital reverb, but even with my own level matching, the EMT has such a pure haunting tone that can't be matched. But I would prefer a blind test with matched levels to make sure it's not bias. The bricasti on it's own would work well, but in contrast, at least to me, the plate just has infinite depth that the M7 can't match.

Yeah I agree. I think the bricasti is great, but still the analog reverbs comes out on top

The Bricasti is softer, less bottom end and shorter tail. Match levels and I think it would be very hard to tell. Bricasti only looses because of unmatched sound

The EMT was louder. I had to move the volume on my speakers to help to make sure I wasn't being faked out. I won't print my opinion, but this is good practice.

the real plates sound like thick cream with really cool ghostly sounds arising, and slightly dirty and "uneven". the Bricasti, like most digital stuff, is so clean and normal and almost like a pair of new shiny shoes. Matt, I love you, but the sound difference is huge between the old gear and the digital. x Gordon Raphael (sound tweaker, and fan of analog gear)

Presentation consists of an on-camera mono mic to record an expensive reverb unit. You're sitting next to $100K of audio gear and you record this with a cell phone?!?! Genius

EMT sounds great, altiverb get close as iv'e heard from software but still very far from the real thing... i'v'e done a rough video of the one i just sold & fitted if interested.. thanks for the upload! it takes effort somewhat to do these YT videos its a shame some users don't have the general social manners nowadays..

For me the EMT and Echoplate stole the show here. I thought the Echoplate came off in this vid but I'm a great fan of EMT so it probably depends on the situation. The Bricasti beats most of the comparable competition but compared to the real plates the vocal seemed to fall into the background whereas with the EMT and Echoplate the vocal was always upfront.

Hmmm. Problem here is presence. You want reverb, but also a tactile sense of the voice. That kinda plate hides all of that. Or, the mix of where the reverb sits as opposed to the source is not apparent in this demo. Plus, just too much reverb plate either emt or otherwise. But, you gave me stuff to think about.

The Bricasti simply has too much of it going on. You just don't hear the source enough to leave the body in. Try listening to Norman Brown's (jazz guitar) tune Pop's Cool Groove, to hear reverb, and who knows what else that gives Brown's guitar unbelievably gorgeous tone. Super rich sound...is it a delay and compression also? It's unreal.

If you listen really well you can tell that the Bricasti levels were up slightly higher than the others---which will easily cause a huge disparity in comparing the results. The levels should have been matched better. I think the comparison itself would have been much closer had this been done. With the way the results were presented here, you heard more of the bricasti causing the perception to be that the M7 is working harder to emulate the original. You may want to redo this comparison.

You're obviously aware of this from the comments, but seriously, as pro audio people, run the audio directly...or...video guy, how about you record the audio directly to an external recorder and sync it up later in your editing software...the whole point of this clip has been defeated...

i cant stand video reviews gear that get reviewed by a shitty mic and not a line in, it almost a pointless review i can not hear the clarity and i can not hear how good it is.
