A city like that with a thriving downtown and historic district usually has an industrial district somewhat further away that provides the main income of the town. The sawmill is a start, but maybe some other industries would work as well in that area

An industrial district building on the style of the sawmill could fit well in the free space. Industrial estates tend to be close to logistics hubs like airports and it’s common for them to have dedicated railway sidings for loading goods. It could be a nice way to resolve the transition between the aesthetic of the village and the airport and it’d be a chance to put in a goods freight station rather than a regular train station.
@danielfindley6931

Here are some ideas for the empty space: 1. you shoud build there a big lake and have there a small B&B as well as a train station. In the lake it self you can build some fishing boats or even The Loch Ness Monster! 2. It will be very cool if you built a rocket launch pad in your Lego city in the empty space next to the airport, it will be very cool to see two major peojects connecting together! And by the way I think you should put a train station right next to the terminal like there are in many airports around the world to make it more convenient for tourists and residents to move around the city.

An important part for any log storage is sprinkler systems. It keeps the logs damp and protects and prepares them for cutting. And an inspector. Often mills are independent from the logging crews. So there is an independent third party that inspects the wood and says it worth. So it’s not bias to the mill or the logging company. I live in the US pacific NW. A lot of logging over here. So just some ideas for a bit of realism

I love how the village is coming together and the interconnectedness of the stories being told. Can't wait for the inevitable logging camp to explain where the logs are coming from! I think a fun idea you could put into the empty area is that saw mills in the past were often times off rivers, since that's how they got the logs there, by having them run downstream. Maybe you could have a small little section up on a hill that the train track would run under (maybe the station is at the exit/entrance to a tunnel in front of the hill), and have at the top of the hill have a group of workers chopping down trees and have them putting them in the river to be sent down to the mill along with the logs that are being delivered by train. I think that would be a fun way to tie in that section with the forest by the castle area and make it look natural as well with the sawmill. ^^

Some sort of logging camp for the trains to load up on logs to transport them to the sawmill could be interesing; but currently the saw mill might be too close to the forest for that to really work. A station in the far end that includes a track for the logging cart to go to the sawmill and passengers to reach the airport would definitely be fun; bonus points if you can let it identify what trains are passing at any given time and have them be shunted to the right track.

You've done a lot of work with your city. Ive been here before you moved to the bigger place and now the city's expanding! Congrats

Would love to see a camp site, a section of forest that’s been cut down, a lake, a small hotel, little pub, park rangers hut, maybe a junk yard with broken down cars a few guard dogs and also a combine harvester for the wheat farm.

Great job on the saw mill. It's just incredible. I think a good transition to the airport would be an industrial/trucking area. It does a good job of transitioning from sawmill to airport and would make logistical sense to be near the airport.

The corner might not be the best place but I’d love to see you build a water park and/or out door swimming pool with slides and diving boards. Or a theme park with roller coasters, big wheel, snack bars etc. People need to have fun

There needs to be like a farmers market. Selling crops of all kind. With a ‘petting zoo’ with cows, sheep, chickens etc. that would be a great addition to that area

Once again a stellar update! A “bad side of the city” type of neighborhood could be cool and would tie well with the mafia storyline. Also would love to see, how you’d design a modern office building with glass walls.

Long ago I've worked at a woodshop, all the machines were hooked up with ventilation to the ceiling, all the sawdust was sucked up and transported to an machine outside on the roof. That machine compresses all the sawdust into little cylinders which are then sold for fuel for fireplaces and such.

I would add a water treatment and /or waste disposal area only because every city building game emphasizes these services. A junkyard would also be a place full of cool details
